    2:10:52

Yielding to intense pressure from his fans, the maestro rendered a VOCAL concert at the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha in the late 1980s.

  • Lalgudi G Jayaraman Srimathi Palghat Mani Iyer Palghat Rajamani 1965

    2:27:21

Our 29th upload features the Maestro and Srimathi, with the double mirdangam accompaniment of the legendary Palghat Mani Iyer and his son Palghat Rajamani. This was a brief but extremely popular combination during the mid 1960s with the mirdangam duo seen on stage with all the great artists of the day.
This particular concert took place in Chennai in April 1965. Typical of a Lalgudi concert, it is a feast of melody and laya with the swara passages reminding one of a symphony.
Sadly the mirdangam thani avartanam is missing in the original source recording. Our apologies to the rasikas for this.

    Learn more about the music:

The Lalgudi siblings are the torchbearers of their eponymous gharana, named for their late father Lalgudi G Jayaraman - one of Carnatic music’s ‘violin trinity’. The family claim a direct lineage back to Thyagaraja, an 18th century saint-musician revered by Carnatic aficionados, with a style marked by superb lyrical expression and divine melodic ornamentations.

After a childhood of training under their father and grandfather Lalgudi Gopala Iyer, they embarked on intertwining but distinct careers (Krishnan thankfully abandoning a career in cost accounting to focus on music full-time). Today they are known as violinists, vocalists, and composers, commanding respect for duets and individual performances alike.

A thillana is a form of rhythmic Carnatic song, often used to end performances. It is strongly influenced by Indian classical dance forms, and is intended to bring a satisfying conclusion to long kutcheri [Carnatic concerts]. Some believe that the form is in part derived from the North Indian tarana, a fast-paced style influenced by Persian and Arabic music.

This famous thillana composition uses the framework of Sindhu Bhairavi, a versatile Carnatic raga. It is popular for bhajans and lighter song forms - performers enjoy the rare freedom of being able to use all 12 notes (known as Bhashanga), allowing for a wide range of ornamentations. The core scale ascends as SR₂G₂M₁PD₁N₂S and descends as SN₂D₁PM₁G₂R₁S, with the characteristic use of two different Ri swaras. It may have origins in the Middle East, and has strong links to North Indian music, although should not be confused with the related but distinct Hindustani Raag Bhairavi. • Lalgudi G Jayaraman - Palghat Mani Iyer - Astika Samajam, Venus Colony, Madras - 1966

    3:1:12

Lalgudi – Palghat Mani Iyer - Just the two titans on stage! It must have given the audience an ethereal feeling, something otherworldly!
Our 20th upload is a rare recording of a concert preformed at the Asthika Samajam, Venus Colony, Madras. The concert was most likely performed on Vinayaka Chathurthi day as there are two songs dedicated to the elephant God.
The source spool tape was not in the best condition, but we have managed to retrieve the entire concert. However, there is a drop in sound quality for a few minutes in the 3rd item, Vathapi Ganapathim and in the 7th item, Sita Vara. We request the fans to bear with us for some brief infirmities in the recording.
It is well known that when Palghat Mani Iyer was the accompanist, the great bowman would alter his playing style to a more subdued one in line with the musical preference of the great percussionist. This is evident in this concert. Needless to say, the quality of the music remains timeless.
Rasikas will enjoy a few hours of divine melody from the Godly maestro!

  • Lalgudi Jayaramans concert on Sri Swamijis 50th Birthday festival - 1992

    16:27

Late Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman, acclaimed and greatly respected violinist in India gave a concert in 1992. The concert was part of Pujya Sri Swamiji's 50th Birthday celebrations on 14th June 1992. The venue was prayer hall in Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananada Ashrama in Mysore.
Sri Swamiji, who has composed thousands of Bhajans is also acclaimed for the Swarkashara Kritis. These songs are composed of only seven letters of the seven music notes of India - Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da & Ni (corresponding with Do Re Mi Fa So La & Ti of western notations). Sri Swamiji had asked Lalgudi Jayaraman to set them to tune and the great bowman sang them for the first time in Sri Swamiji's 50th birthday concert.

Son of Sri. Lalguji Jayaraman, Sri. G.J.R. Krishnan accompanied on the violin, Sri. Umayalapuram K. Sivaraman accompanied on the Mridangam and Sri. Vikku Vinayakaram accompanied on the Ghatam. Another astonishing fact is - Flute supremo, Dr.N.Ramani plays Tambura (Tanpura) when Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman sings Swarakshara Kritis.

The video recording dates back to 1992 and the quality may please be ignored. This is a video tribute from Datta Peetham for Lalgudi's genius contributions to music field and to the long and cherished relationship he had with Sri Swamiji. He accompanied Sri Swamiji in concerts many times and also on Chennai Doordarshan Healing music program.

    9:27

Lalgudi Jayaraman plays Adamodi galade in Charukesi, accompanied by his son G.J.R.Krishnan on the violin and Palghat Raghu on the mridangam. I find the studio setting, the costumes of the artists, the attitude ......everything.....disarmingly simple and non pretentious. Notice how Lalgudi waits for Palghat Raghu to tune his mridangam and give him the Go ahead signal in the beginning :-)

  • Carnatic Music - Lalgudi Jayaraman & Palghat Mani Iyer

    4:29

    Nada Sagaram -

In the sphere of Carnatic music, Padma Bhushan Sri Lalgudi G. Jayaraman is another name for perfection and musical excellence. Endowed with extraordinary intelligence, blessed with a photographic memory combined with a finely attuned ear for aesthetics, Lalgudi revolutionized the style of violin playing, inventing a whole new technique which came to be known as the Lalgudi Bani. His flawless and fascinating style, graceful, firmly rooted in tradition, yet original and innovative, gained him innumerable fans. This multi-dimensional genius is also a composer par excellence and has to his credit several 'kritis', 'tillanas' and 'varnams', which are a scintillating blend of raga, rhythm, bhava and lyrical beauty.

In 1958, the maestro started performing violin solo concerts along with his sister Srimathi Brahmanandam, herself a gifted violinist. Lalgudi violin duets were unique in the way he combined the two violins in a delectable musical exchange (Like the kalpana swara for the Kannada kriti in this product which creates a symphony effect). Violin duets gained a new dimension and status on the concert platform.

With so many accomplishments, Lalgudi still believes there is more to be done. In a recent interview Lalgudi has said, Music is my life breath. It is not a thing to be achieved. It is a path to be traversed. I honestly feel that I am a senior student. There is much more that is waiting to be discovered. If God grants me a wish, I would ask, Please make me twenty-five years younger. I want to delve deeper into the ocean of music.

This product showcases one of his magnificent concerts at The Music Academy, Chennai, in the year 1965, along with his sister Smt. Srimathi Brahmanandam, and accompanied by none other than the mridangam legend Shri. Palghat Mani Iyer and his son T.R. Rajamani. Mani Iyer is hailed as the monarch of percussionists and an incarnation of the Nandi. The coming together of two such masters brings us a divine and spellbinding experience of music in all its glory.

  • Lalgudi G Jayaraman Srimathi Brahmanandam Palghat Mani iyer

    2:41:57

“An Incurable Romantic- The Musical Journey of Lalgudi Jayaraman’, his biography, was published in 2013. For Lalgudi fans, their musical journey with the maestro began in the early 1950s. Many vividly recall the first time they heard him either live or on AIR . Fresh in the listener’s memories is his first ever solo concert performed in the Krishna Gana Sabha in 1958. It established an entirely new bani; the Lalgudibani. With its breathtaking music making and total instrument mastery, the bani was a paradigm shift. Fans flocked to his performances whether they be his great solo performances, jugalbandis, Violin Venu Veena concerts, Lec Dems, vocal concerts or concerts with numerous vocalists.
This channel is hosted by a group of his fans who have been diligently collecting and digitizing hundreds of his performances over the years. It is proposed to share with rasikas, over a period of time, all these concerts subject to Copyright laws.
As a first, we are uploading a solo performance where the maestro is accompanied by Srimathi Brahmanadam and the incomparable Palghat Mani Iyer. The concert includes a soulful Keeravani and breathtaking Shanmukhapriya.
On the whole, the concert is one of immense beauty with the great percussionist enhancing the music throughout. In the raga malika swarams forming part of the RTP, the sollu patterns seem to mirror the raga itself.
We invite rasikas to enjoy this wonderful concert.

The concert begins with a Lalgudi special, Charukesi. The fecundity of Lalgudi’s music is never more evident than when playing this item.
