    They Don't Know

    by Kirsty MacColl

... i transferred the audio to this song in 2006, and have not had the time to do it again: The first line, does not match the original sound quality. the rest of the song sounds acceptable though! Sorry it's not perfect, guess you'd have to buy one of the original 7 singles, or get a decent cd...... Long Live Vinyl (un digitally remastered vinyl ie analogue sounding music! )

In 1991, British pop singer Kirsty MacColl teamed up with legendary Smiths guitarist, Johnny Marr. One of the results was 'Walking Down Madison' (from her Electric Landlady album), which reached #23 in the UK and stayed in the chart for seven weeks. Somewhat of a departure from Kirsty's usual pop style, the song grew out of a guitar riff that Marr sent to her and she bestowed upon it her characteristic lyrical and melodic flair. The hip-hop tinged production came courtesy of Kirsty's then husband, Steve Lillywhite and this video was shot on location -- as the song says -- on New York's Madison Avenue.

Kirsty MacColl - Theres a guy works down the chip shop, swears hes Elvis 1981

    3:05

Kirsty MacColl - There's a guy works down the chip shop, swears he's Elvis 1981

Oh darling why d'you talk so fast
Another evening just flew past tonight
And now the daybreak's coming in
And I can't win and it ain't right
You tell me all you've done and seen
And all the places you have been without me
Well I don't really want to know
But I'll stay quiet and then I'll go
And you won't have no cause to think about me

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
Just like you swore to me that you'd be true
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

    Oh darling you're so popular
You were the best thing new in Hicksville
With your mohair suits and foreign shoes
Lou says you changed your pickup for a Seville
And now I'm lying here alone
'Cause you're out there on the phone to some star in New York
I can hear you laughing now
And I can't help feeling that somehow
You don't mean anything you say at all

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
Just like you swore to me that you'd be true
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

    (Instrumental)

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
Just like you swore to me that you'd be true
There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis
But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you
He's a liar and I'm not sure about you

A lovely song taken from Kirsty MacColl's Electric Landlady album (released in 1991), 'All I Ever Wanted' sees Kirsty doing what she does best: bemoaning the lack of respect shown to her by her slob of a partner, played in this fast-paced video by Roland Rivron. Kirsty transforms herself into Juliet, Cleopatra and the Queen Of The Jungle as she daydreams her way out of domestic life.

This wonderful cover of the Ray Davies classic brought a whole new audience to the song when it was released in June 1995 by British pop singer Kirsty MacColl. Taken from her Kite album, 'Days' is one of the finest examples of Kirsty's incredible skill at creating multi-layered vocal harmonies.

Incorporating hand tinting and animation to lend an other-worldly feel, the video for 'Days' was clever and somewhat unusual. According to Kirsty, her hair was supposed to be tinted Kirsty colour (red) and although she looks sumptuous in her own wedding dress, she was never keen on the video as a result.

Along with her penchant for perfect pop - and later Latin music - Kirsty could also turn her hand to country, and 'Don't Come The Cowboy With Me, Sonny Jim!' (from her 1989 album Kite) is a great example of Kirsty's skill as a songwriter. The video, interspersed with old Shirley Temple footage, finds Kirsty in world-weary form as she laments the shortcomings of her lover: something she was exceptionally good at.

Kirsty MacColl's first foray into the Latin music that would later become a big influence on her work, the amusingly acerbic 'My Affair' (from her Electric Landlady album) reached #56 in the UK chart when it was released in August 1991. The video finds Kirsty looking glam, carefree and having a ball with her band and a selection of uninhibited dancers.

    Lyrics:

    It was Christmas Eve, babe
    In the drunk tank
An old man said to me
    Won't see another one
And then he sang a song
    'The Rare Old Mountain Dew'
    I turned my face away
    And dreamed about you

    Got on a lucky one
    Came in eighteen-to-one
    I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
    So, Happy Christmas
    I love you, baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars big as bars
    They've got rivers of gold
    But the wind goes right through you;
It's no place for the old
When you first took my hand
    On a cold Christmas Eve
    You promised me Broadway
    Was waiting for me

You were handsome! You were pretty
    Queen of New York City
    When the band finished playing
    They howled out for more
    Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks, they were singing
    We kissed on a corner
    Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
    Were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing out
    For Christmas day

    You're a bum, you're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
    Lying there almost dead
On a drip in that bed
    You scumbag, you maggot
    You cheap lousy faggot
    Happy Christmas, your arse
I pray God it's our last

The boys of the NYPD choir
    Still singing Galway Bay
And the bells are ringing out
    For Christmas day

    I could have been someone
    Well, so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
    When I first found you
I kept them with me, babe
I put them with my own
    Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

The boys of the NYPD choir
    Still singing Galway Bay
And the bells are ringing out
    For Christmas day

Kirsty MacColl - Dont Come The Cowboy With Me, Sonny Jim

    3:40

Some boys with warm beds and cold, cold hearts
Can make you feel nothing at all
They'll never remember and they'll never mind
If you're counting the cracks in the wall
    They're quick and they're greedy
    They never feel guilty
They don't know the meaning of hurt
The boots just go back on
The socks that had stayed on
The next time they see you
    They treat you like dirt
The next time they treat you like dirt

Now don't come the cowboy with me Sonny Jim
I know lots of those and you're not one of them
There's a light in your eyes tells me somebody's in
And you won't come the cowboy with me

Don't be too rough on my cold, cold heart
It's all I've got left to me now
I fell out of favour with heaven somewhere
And I'm here for the hell of it now
    Some girls play cowboys
And some boys play harder to get
But they're got just the same
    They smile and say cheese
    They're so eager to please
But they'll never remember your name
The names and the places all change

But don't come the cowboy with me Sonny Jim
I know lots of those and you're not one of them
There's a light in your eyes tells me somebody's in
And you won't come the cowboy with me

Did somebody tell you I'm lonely as hell?
I didn't expect you to know me so well
If I learned a lesson it's how to bounce back again
Sometimes I bounce off the wall
And sometimes my head hits the floor

So don't come the cowboy with me Sonny Jim
I know lots of those and you're not one of them
There's a light in your eyes tells me somebody's in
And you won't come the cowboy
Oh don't come the cowboy with me Sonny Jim
I know lots of those and you're not one of them
There's a light in your eyes tells me somebody's in
And you won't come the cowboy with me
