    King Crimson - Lizard (1970)

    Prince Rupert Awakes

    Farewell the temple master's bells
His kiosk and his black worm seed
    Courtship solely of his word
    With Eden guaranteed
For now Prince Rupert's tears of glass
    Make saffron sabbath eyelids bleed
Scar the sacred tablet of wax
    On which the Lizards feed

    Wake your reason's hollow vote
    Wear your blizzard season coat
Burn a bridge and burn a boat
Stake a Lizard by the throat

    Go Polonius or kneel
The reapers name their harvest dawn
    All your tarnished devil's spoons
    Will rust beneath our corn
Now bears Prince Rupert's garden roam
Across his rain tree shaded lawn
    Lizard bones become the clay
And there a swan is born

    Wake your reason's hollow vote
    Wear your blizzard season coat
Burn a bridge and burn a boat
Stake a Lizard by the throat

    Gone soon Piepowder's moss-weed court
    Round which upholstered Lizards sold
    Visions to their leaden flock
    Of rainbows' ends and gold
Now tales Prince Rupert's peacock brings
Of walls and trumpets thousand fold
    Prophets chained for burning masks
    And reels of dreams unrolled...

  • John Wetton of King Crimson and Asia Dead At 67 - Our Tribute

    3:21

Asia and King Crimson Singer John Wetton Dead at 67

The singer and bassist had been battling cancer since 2015. Asia drummer Carl Palmer who just lost his two old ELP compadres Keith Emerson and Greg Lake last year said, “the world loses yet another musical giant, John was a gentle person who created some of the most lasting melodies and lyrics in modern popular music. As a musician, he was both brave and innovative, with a voice that took the music of Asia to the top of the charts around the world. His ability to triumph over alcohol abuse made him an inspiration to many who have also fought that battle. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, his valiant struggle against cancer was a further inspiration. I will miss his talent, his sense of humor and his infectious smile. May you ride easy, my old friend.”

Asia keyboardist Geoff Downes said, “He will be remembered as one of the world’s finest musical talents, and I for one of many was wholly blessed by his influence, It was a massive privilege for me to have worked with this genius so closely on our numerous projects together over the years. His bass playing was revolutionary. His voice was from the gods. His compositions — out of this world. His sense of melody and harmony — unreal. He was literally a ‘special one.'”

Wetton helped juice up some impressive acts in Rock and Prog including joining King Crimson for their tasty 5th album, ‘Larks’ Tongues in Aspic.’ He was also on 1974’s ‘Starless and Bible Black,’ and ‘Red.’ After Robert Fripp put the band on hiatus Wetton worked with Roxy Music and Uriah Heep and then came UK. The singer was trying to get King Crimson back on track with their drummer Bill Bruford but it wasn’t jelling so the pair formed UK with Eddie Jobson on keys and violin. Their second album, ‘Danger Money’ was a big part of my high school years. In keeping with the revolving doors in Prog rock that album featured only Wetton, Jobson and drummer Terry Bozzio. I loved Wetton’s haunting vocals on UK’s ‘Rendezvous 602.’

After the breakup of UK he released his first solo album ‘Caught in the Crossfire’ in 1980. In all he has six solo albums.

If you didn’t know the name John Wetton up to that point everything would change in 1982 when he joined up with Geoff Downes, known then for the Buggles but now for Yes, Steve Howe of Yes, and Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. With the help of the huge hit, ‘Heat of the Moment’ their self titled debut was the biggest album of 1982. They’ve released 14 studio albums. Wetton sang on 8 of them.

Yes‘ Billy Sherwood will be doing Asia’s dates in March and April which also includes their stint on the ‘Cruise to the Edge’ hosted by Yes and also featuring Kansas and Steve Hackett which sets sail on Feb. 11.

May he rest in peace – by John Beaudin

  • King Crimson - Starless

    12:23

Starless by King Crimson. Another taster from the new King Crimson album - Radical Action to Unseat the Hold of Monkey Mind.

As those lucky enough to have seen it live will know, the opening chord of this song are often accompanied by an intake of breath. Like an incoming tide of realisation, all the variations on I never thought I’d hear this live, or crikey, this is my favourite, OMG I’ve died and gone to heaven and a few more sentiments besides.

The complexities behind capturing the seven-headed Crimson on video are described in David Singleton's liner notes :

It is something of a truism in the history of Crimson that any show that is filmed will not be one when heaven meets earth and the angels descend. The presence of cameras and cameramen iintroduces an intrusive element into the relationship between the artist, the music and the audience. Our solution was to return to the concept of BootlegTV and prioritise the music and the performance rather than the pictures. We embedded a single cameraman (the long-suffering Trevor Wilkins) on this tour, and he filmed every night with a a series of cameras hidden discreetly on the stage where they would intrude on neither artist nor audience. The compromise is thus in the visuals and not in the music.

The set was recently described by John Kelman in All about jazz as the definitive live Crimson release from the definitive live Crimson lineup; a landmark recording from a group whose discography is filled with them.

Although Fripp and King Crimson will forever be known for pioneering the prog-rock movement with 1969’s In the Court of the Crimson King, his innovation on guitar technology and craft is staggering. His collaborations with Brian Eno, David Bowie, and Andy Summers are highlights of a solo career nearing 50 years. John Bohlinger went to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to get the details from Biff Blumfumgagnge, Fripp’s main road tech since 2005. Blumfumgagnge demoed Fripp’s gear and explained the engineering behind the alchemy.
