  • Khruangbin: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

    11:33

May 16, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- It was daylight but the music was dark and moody. And despite having the office lights turned on high, it was Khruangbin's trance-inducing tone that set the mood and carried me away.

This trio from Houston, Texas is heavily inspired by 1960s and '70s funk and soul from, of all places, Thailand. That musical passion has taken them on a journey that, these days, incorporates music from Spain, Ethiopia and the Middle East. Khruangbin's largely instrumental music is grounded in Laura Lee's bass, with Mark Speer playing those melodic, richly reverbed guitar sounds and Donald DJ Johnson on drums and piano.

Two of the three songs performed at this Tiny Desk Concert are from their 2018 album Con Todo El Mundo, which is dedicated in part to Laura Lee's Mexican-American grandfather. He'd often ask her how much she loved him and the response that pleased him most was when she would say, con todo el mundo, (with all the world.)

The third track in this performance is one of the band's first forays into vocals, from their 2015 debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You. White Gloves gently pays homage to a classy lady who was a fighter and who died in a fight. Its open-ended lyrics could imply a battle that was violent or an illness. It isn't clear. What is clear is the reverence in the song and in this music — music that strays from typical instrumental songs with heavy beats. This is music to sway to and to lift you beyond the day to day.

  • Khruangbin - Friday Morning

    6:51

    Order album:

Friday Morning is a love song, written and recorded at the remote farm in Burton, Texas where Khruangbin got its start. To commemorate the song, the band asked their closest friends and family to record messages of love to each band member. The music video is a portrait of the band hearing these audio recordings for the first time, capturing on film the emotions one feels when they hear just how loved they are; a poignant and heartfelt expression in a time where, as a collective whole, we need to hear and express love more than ever.

  • Khruangbin - White Gloves

    3:37

“This is the first song with lyrics we’ve ever written. We never really thought of ourselves as having a “singer” but we knew that we wanted a voice for Khruangbin. We decided to write about something close to us, tell a story as simply as possible, and sing it together. We created the footage for 'White Gloves' many years ago by creating a video feedback loop with a vhs camera and an old television. We always wanted to use it in some way with Khruangbin, and after all of this time, it found what it was missing. It lets the story and the song speak for themselves. ”

Khruangbin has made quite the name for themselves over the past couple years by producing dreamy, Thai-influenced, psychedelic music. It’s a sound that seems like it came straight out of a Tarantino movie. I take a look at the Houston trio's background and show how they brought 60s & 70s Thai funk to the masses.

Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to Engine Fly in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound.

“We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

    - A young girl's journey through various landscapes -
Collaborating with Khruangbin, we wanted to convey the ideas of journey, exploration, growth and innocence. Using these themes as my guide, the video tells the story of a young girl, escaping from the chaos of fast-paced city life through her dreams to a more liberating and joyful place. Playing with symbolism--the paper plane as a metaphor for Khruangbin, which means airplane in Thai, to convey discovery through travel; walking through unknown passageways as growth through life's various stages; and, the shot with the young girl and cow to convey rebirth, for it points to the name and thus meaning of the song--was a way to subtly convey this message. And, personally for me, it's the song's beautiful, dream-like melodies that tie the piece together, taking you to a truly peaceful place.

We sat down with the band during Down The Rabbit Hole to discuss their first time appearance on a festival mainstage, what dub really is and what their fans can expect from Hasta El Cielo. Some people will be like: 'Yes!' and some people will be like: 'This is the same record, just with echoes on it, what's that?'

    Article & photos:

Reverb addict Mark Speer and badass bassist Laura Lee met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger before their ultra-hip, sold-out show at Nashville’s Basement East. Speer and Lee took the crew through their non-conventional approach to nuevo-vintage tones.

Mark Speer tours with a single guitar: his 2001 Fender Classic Series ’70s Stratocaster. Speer hot-rodded the Strat with DiMarzio Cruiser pickups in the neck and bridge as well as extra-large frets and a TUSQ saddle and string trees. This Strat stays strung with D’Addario Chrome flatwound (.042–.032–.024–.016–.012–.010) strings. Amazingly, Speer has played the same (almost) round Jim Dunlop Green (.73 mm) Tortex pick for years.

Laura Lee’s main axe is her 2009 SX Custom Handmade J-style bass that’s been upgraded with DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups and strung with D’Addario Chrome flatwound strings.

We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

Globetrotting Texan trio Khruangbin announce their second album ‘Con Todo El Mundo’.

The video for the album's first single, 'Maria También', tells the story of Iranian women prior to the revolution of 1979. Celebrating their creativity, freedom and ability to express themselves, the video shows a side of women in the Middle East that often isn't seen in the Western world.

The women in the video are all part of a large network of artists, singers, dancers and songwriters who have been either exiled or silenced since the revolution. With the video, Khruangbin hopes to bring these remarkable women back into the spotlight and honour the artistry of silenced women everywhere.

  • Khruangbin - Maria También

    3:11

Let's get the big question answered right away. The name means 'airplane' in Thai, says Khruangbin's Laura Lee. We were listening to a lot of Thai music when we started the band, and I tried to learn Thai at the time, and khruangbin was one of the first words I learned, and it was really fun to say. And it seemed fitting — because we were listening to Thai music at the time — to name ourselves after what we were inspired by.

Frequently mislabeled as a Thai-funk band, omnidirectionally influenced trio Khruangbin — comprising bassist Lee, along with guitarist Mark Speer and drummer Donald DJ Johnson — are actually from Houston, Texas. In St. Paul for a show at the Turf Club, Khruangbin stopped at The Current for a session hosted by David Safar.

As evidence of their many inspirations, the new album from Khruangbin has a Spanish name, Con Todo El Mundo, and features the hit single, Maria También, also in Spanish. Not that Khruangbin have lost any love for Thai music. The first album was inspired by Thai music and the name was Thai, so I think it was an easy thing to write, to say that Khruangbin was Thai funk, Lee says. But we pull from music from all over the world.

It's a disservice to those bands from Thailand who are doing really, really amazing work, Speer adds. That's some of my favorite music in the world.

Althought the members of Khruangbin say that Houston isn't home to a lot of record labels or other music-industry infrastructure, the city has launched the careers of many accomplished musicians. Lee notes that many, many Houston musicians have become highly regarded session players, and Speer and Johnson met one another playing music in the church where Beyoncé grew up.

Plus, in the town of Burton, Texas, is where Khruangbin can find the space — and the barn — where they can record their music. It's dirt floors, it's a big corrugated tin building; you can open up all the doors, Speer explains. Usually to prepare for the rehearsals, we'll get all the bees out and make some noise so the little critters can know to find another place to be for the next couple days, and then we just bring in some gear and set it up and that's it.

The space allows the band to be as loud or as quiet as they need to be. It's a farm-to-(turn)table approach to music that seems to be suiting Khruangbin very well.
