  • How Matt Brownlie WON a GRAMMY from his HOME STUDIO! - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

    22:23

➡️➡️Click here to learn more about Matt Brownlie:
➡️➡️Check out Recording Strings and Horns with Matt Brownlie at NRG Studios:

Matt Brownlie’s career is an illustrious one that speaks for itself through both the range of genres and also the sheer talent he has worked with. His accolades include working with Bette Midler, LL Cool J, Destiny’s Child, Frank Ocean, Kesha, and many more. In 2013, Matt won a GRAMMY in the Best Latin Jazz Album category for his recording/mixing on ¡Ritmo!

Matt started his career with a small-scale studio apprenticeship.

Matt’s engineering career got its legs when the Recording Connection placed him in an apprenticeship with his mentor Brian Levi at Clear Lake in North Hollywood in 2008. He notes that “this was a humble, but great little studio,” which is still operating today. He left Clear Lake after 2 years to pursue an internship at Westlake in Hollywood in 2010.

Westlake Recording Studios is a large-format commercial studio known for not only its recording legacy, but its innovative studio design as well. Matt became a staff engineer there, where he recorded, edited, and mixed music for the studio’s huge clientele. He ultimately left the staff position after 4 years, but continued a working relationship with Westlake as a contracted engineer.

Concurrently with his staff gig at Westlake, he went to work with Brent Fischer and his father, the late, great Clare Fischer. He started off in Brent’s home studio doing edits, then MIDI programming, then overdubs, which led to him working on ¡Ritmo! Matt has worked now with Brent Fischer for over 10 years, recording and mixing big bands, orchestras, and many more!

As a freelance recording and mixing engineer for over 10 years, Matt Brownlie has recorded everything from jazz ensembles and chamber orchestras to voiceover actors, audiobooks, and podcasts. Audio editing, mixing, ADR, and repair are just a few of the skills which make him an incredibly talented and successful engineer in this industry!

  • Boulevard Recording Studio Tour with Clay Blair - Produce Like A Pro

    1:18:30

Producer/Engineer Clay Blair gives us a tour of his Studio 'Boulevard Recording', formerly known as 'Producer's Workshop', where Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'The Wall' was overdubbed, mixed and mastered.
Sign up here to get exclusive videos and content

My friend and legendary producer Shelly Yakus recently hit me up and told me: 'Hey Warren, for your next studio tour, you need to check out Clay Blair's studio 'Boulevard Recording'.

And I'm so glad I did!

Formerly named 'Producer's Workshop', this studio has a lot of history: Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'The Wall' was overdubbed, mixed and mastered at this studio, Steely Dan tracked their last two records 'Aja' and 'Gaucho' there, they had legendary artists like Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Blink 182, as well as all former Beatles members.

Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin described this studio as “acoustically perfect“ and “one of the greatest recording rooms ever built“.

In this video, Clay tells us how 'The Wall' was recorded and mixed, and gives us a complete tour of the studio, including the live room where they tracked 'The Wall'.

I have to admit: I felt a bit like a kid in a candy store! Every great vintage hardware unit which plugin designers like to model: Clay has the original one. Plus a huge collection of guitars, pedals, amps, vintage organs (used on Beatles records) and microphones!

You'll get to see a beautiful studio, get tons of great tips on how to put your favourite plugin emulations to use, and learn a lot about music history, I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you so much for having us Clay, it was a blast!

    Many Thanks,

    Warren

  • The Doghouse Studio Tour and interview with Rodger Carter - Warren Huart - Produce Like A Pro

    18:14

➡️➡️Click here to learn more about Rodger Carter:

Rodger Carter is one of the rare Los Angeles natives working full-time in the music industry. He began his life in professional music by playing club shows on the Sunset Strip at just 14-years-old. A drummer by trade, steady studio work and touring soon followed, hitting the road with Lita Ford at age 21 for his first national tour.

Rodger’s powerful and consistent style has always kept him working in one of the most competitive cities for music in the world. He’s worked both on the road and in the studio with artists like John 5, Berlin, John Waite, Justin Guarini, Eddie Money, Meredith Brooks, Evan & Jaron, Lisa Loeb, and Lita Ford.

In 2002, Rodger opened The Doghouse Studio in LA which has been a hotspot for talent for nearly two decades. Rodger originally intended to build a glorified jam room for him and his musician friends. But when Rick Springfield (for whom Rodger drums) saw the build in progress, he offered to buy all of the equipment necessary to make it a full-blown recording facility, dubbed The Doghouse.

When Rodger is not running Doghouse Studio he is frequently on the road touring internationally with Rick Springfield, though he’s given himself more time off-stage over the last few years.

Doghouse plays host to a huge variety of artists—anything from the heaviest industrial metal to jazz has been recorded and mixed at the studio. Rodger plays on plenty of drum sessions, but he also rents the studio out for people who just want to use the space with their own personnel.

As the owner of Doghouse, he has three first-call engineers on staff so he doesn’t have to worry about engineering himself. He can focus on being a session drummer and studio owner first and foremost.

For the most part, he’s chosen a wide variety of different equipment so his engineers have options and can choose their own preference. You can see how he’s set things up in the studio tour below!

We hope you enjoy this conversation and tour of Doghouse Studio with the amazing Rodger Carter!

Earlier this week I went to Tommy Lee’s Studio, The Atrium to record bonus material for the Matt Starr course we've just released. We wanted to show people how to do the Glynn John’s drum technique and also full micing of drums and where better to do this than one of the most famous Drummers in the worlds studio? Tommy’s Engineer is Smiley Sean and yes, Smiley is his real first name!

Smiley has recorded Courtney Love, Motley Crue, Smashing Pumpkins and many more, working with Producers and Engineers such as Michael Beinhorn, Howard Willing and Ross Hogarth. His knowledge of the room is extensive and he gets amazing drum sounds in a matter of minutes! In this video he gives us a tour of the studio, it’s equipment and sits down with me to tell us about his journey and experiences recording.

“With programmed drums, can you use the same EQ principles that you’ve gone over or has this already been done in the programming stage?”

As you probably know a couple of weeks ago I talked about the fact that I’m going to be releasing my own drum samples in a way that you can really get into velocities and all that kind of stuff. I did record them the way that I like to hear them.

However, like Al Schmitt, I don’t EQ a lot on the way in. I do it mainly on the mix- there will be a little bit of EQ applied to the drums to give them the sound that I want.

➡️Questions Covered in this weeks FAQ Friday:
    • What monitors control are you using to switch between the three sets of speakers? (0:45)
    • How do you set up your split console for mixing? Do you have several analog mix templates that you return to depending on the artist material you’re working with? (1:32)
    • With program drums, can you use the same EQ principles that you’ve gone over or has this already been done in the programming stage? (5:59)
    • I also EQ before reverb, is there ever a reason to EQ afterwards? (8:45)
    • What books are standing on the back of the mixer and why do you keep them there? (10:00)
    • When you mention “Glue” on parts like drum kit, how can we define that without being subjective? Is it standard distortion similar to EQ or compression? Or all of the above? What creates that effect in your experience? (14:41)

John McBride's Blackbird Studio in Nashville, TN is easily one of the most amazing places that you will come across in this world of music, recording and producing. During our visit to Summer NAMM, Mark Rubel one of the teachers at the Blackbird Academy invited the Produce Like a Pro Team over for an interview and private tour of the facility. We had an amazing time, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Mark shared with us his story about the conversation that he and John had when he decided to come and teach at Blackbird and start the academy. He also shared details about what the curriculum at blackbird is like and what he aims to teach the students during their time at the academy.

We then toured this amazing facility, got to see all but one of the eight studios on the grounds, went entirely through their infamous microphone locker and got to browse through many shelves of outboard gear that is a part of Blackbird Audio Rentals.

  • Mixing Home Studio Drums - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

How to mix drums recorded in a home studio – and make them sound huge!
Download the Multitracks for free: ‎‎
Follow Produce Like A Pro on Facebook:

Today, we're starting a new series of tutorials:

I'm going to show you how I mixed the Indie-Pop Stay New by Little Empire from start to finish completely in the box, not using any outboard equipment.
You'll get to download the multitrack session of the song, follow along with the tutorials and mix the song for yourself. – All completely for free.

Our first lesson is all about Mixing Home Studio Drums.

I think this tutorial will be very valuable to a lot of you, especially if you're in the early stages of your career:
When starting out, most of us don't have the luxury to record in high-end studios like NRG, United Recording or others, which have beautiful sounding live rooms, great mic selections and make it easy for to get the perfect drum sound at the source.

Instead, you might be recording drums in your rehearsal room or even a small bedroom with a limited set of microphones.

And you know what? IT DOESN'T MATTER!

You can still get a great drum sound out of these recordings by getting creative and applying the right kind of processing in the mixing stage. In today's tutorial I'm going to show you how!

The drums we're mixing today were recorded in a bedroom-sized room at my home studio, with a minimal mic setup and a drummer that played quite dynamically. A perfect example of what most of us are working with on a daily basis.

    Topics discussed in this tutorial:

    - How to mix live drums recorded with a minimal set of mics and use samples and reverb to create a huge drum sound.
    - Drum Bus Compression to add glue to your kit and make it sound cohesive.
    - Tame highly dynamic performances by using compression.
    - How to EQ kick drums, remove room resonance and make them sound powerful and energetic.
    - Enhancing your kick sound and helping it to cut through a dense mix by using samples.
    - Increase the impact of your chorus by adding extra weight to your drums.
    - Keep your phase in check to ensure a full and punchy sound.
    - Snare EQ.
    - Tighten up your snare and remove high-hat bleed using gates.
    - Creating fake ambience and room sound to make your drums sound big and create the illusion of a live room.
    - Toms: Controlling bleed using volume automation, EQ, limiting and compression to tame dynamics and add impact.
    - Production choices and though process.
