  • Dwight/Keith Whitley-Brotherly Love

    3:18

Another Dwight & Keith duet I created in the same vein as my Between An Old Memory and Me duet I created last July. This is by viewer request. This was a lot more of a challenge in that it was next to impossible to get rid of all the seams. It's not a professional job, by any means, but it was created with love by someone who thinks the world of both of these great men. Thank you, Keith, for your music, and thank you, Dwight, for being a friend.

Dwight & Keith's late brother Randy and their sister Mary are also featured in the video.

  • What Id Say by Earl Thomas Conley

    3:54

This song is filled with such anguish! There is so much pain, so much unfathomnable hurt and a red-hot passionate aching. I fell in love with it instantly the very first time I came across this song; and the moment I learnt how to upload music, I had no doubt in my mind that one day, I *will* put this in my channel!

Taken from the 1989 album, 'The heart of it all'.

    **Lyrics**

    What I'd Say
    Earl Thomas Conley

    Talkin to the mirror
    Whisperin your name
Just like you were here, you'd think I was insane
I hold these conversations in the silence of my room
Rehearsing all the things I'd say should I run into you

Hows it going might be what I'd say
You broke my heart you know
Or it looks like rain today
Or maybe god I missed you since you went away
    Your lookin well
Or go to hell might be what I'd say

There's times I feel so angry I'd put my fist right through the wall
Then there's times I've come so close to giving you a call
I love you and I hate you all at the same time
I pray that you'll come back to me before I lose my mind

Hows it going might be what I'd say
You broke my heart you know
Or it looks like rain today
Or maybe god I missed you since you went away
    You're lookin well
Or go to hell might be what I'd say

Guess you'll have to wait until that day
To find out what I'd say

God I missed you since you went away
    You're looking well
    Or go to hell
    Might be what I'd say..

    Lyrics:
It's the third hardest thing I'll ever do
    Leavin' here without you
And the second hardest thing I'll ever do
    Is tellin' her about you
    She's been good to me
    When things were goin' rough
How can I tell her now: good ain't good enough?
Oh, the hardest thing I've ever had to do
Is holding her, and loving you
If she'd give me one good reason, I'd be gone
She ain't done one thing wrong
So don't expect me to just walk out of the door
I still love her, but I love you more
    She's been good to me
    When things weren't goin' right
She made my days long before you made my nights
So, the hardest thing I've ever had to do
Is holding her, and loving you
Yeah, the hardest thing I'll ever have to do
Is holding her, and loving you
Girl, the hardest thing I'll ever have to do
Is holding her, and loving you

    country’s Duke of Earle
    I hear you slipped away
Blake Shelton was the first to break the news
    country’s Duke of Earle
you blessed the world with songs
so sad to hear that you were gone

    but you’re not really gone
    that’s what I tell myself
    because your music lives
    inside our hearts and minds
    No, you’re not really gone
    that’s what we tell ourselves
    your songs are somethin’
    we can’t leave behind

    country’s Duke of Earle
you make the world go round
and help to breathe new life into this town
in every city in in between
    and yes, on country plains
you sang a song to help us with the pain

    but you’re not really gone
    that’s what I tell myself
    because your music lives
    inside our hearts and minds
    No, you’re not really gone
    that’s what we tell ourselves
    your songs are somethin’
    we can’t leave behind

you were the thinking man’s country music
and now our thoughts have to thoughts of true
some folks may say I’m in denial
by I still feel your presence in the room

    no you’re not really gone
    that’s what I tell myself
    because your music lives
    inside our hearts and minds
    No, you’re not really gone
    that’s what we tell ourselves
    your songs are somethin’

Eternal thanks to the entire Whitley family for recently unearthing this gem from their family archives. They have given me their expressed permission to post this entire concert to share with my fellow Keith Whitley fans here on YouTube.'

The annual Reunion of Professional Entertainers (ROPE) is held in Nashville, Tennessee to recognize and honor classic country artists, country musicians, and country music industry executives for their lifetime achievements. Awards are given in the following categories: Entertainer of the Year, Musician of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and the special presentation of the Mac Wiseman Nightingale Award for service and dedication to the aging and ailing members of the organization, among others. The 1988 awards show featured Keith Whitley and his band Miami as the featured entertainment for the evening. He was introduced to the stage by Grand Ole Opry presenter Keith Bilbrey. (It is interesting to note that, at the 2004 awards show, Keith's widow Lorrie Morgan was featured as the entertainment along with her then-husband Sammy Kershaw.)

This excerpt was taken from page 459 of the 2004 book The Encyclopedia of Country Music compiled by Paul Kingsbury, Laura Garrard, & the Country Music Foundation. The excerpt was written by Walt Trott:

The Reunion of Professional Entertainers (ROPE) is a Nashville-based organization created to care for fellow country music entertainers in time of serious illness, death, or other unavoidable distress. Federally chartered in 1983 as a nonprofit organization, ROPE accepts for membership those who have worked in the music industry at least twenty-five years. Since its beginnings, membership has grown from an initial 70 members to 700. Gordon Terry, a founder and first president, helped initiate a trust fund and a death, health, and welfare insurance program. An early mission of ROPE was to build a retirement center for needful seniors. Five-term ROPE president Mac Wiseman has served on the CMA's steering committee to explore the possibility of making this dream a reality. During Wiseman's tenure, a Friends of ROPE program was approved to allow fans and friends of entertainers to contribute as organizational boosters. ROPE holds quarterly social gatherings, conducts benefit concert fund-raisers, sponsors annual Golden ROPE Awards, and runs an annual Fan Fair booth. Address: ROPE, 50 Music Square West, #700E, Nashville, TN 37203.

  • Keith Whitley ~ When You Say Nothing At All ~ Live 1988

    4:46

No copyright infringement intended; for our listening pleasure Only

When You Say Nothing at All is a country song written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. It is among the best-known hit song for Keith Whitley, who took it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart on December 24, 1988. The song was released on the Don't Close Your Eyes Album on May 31, 1988.

KEITH WHITLEY : Jackie Keith Whitley was born on July 1, 1955 and grew up in Sandy Hook, Kentucky. He began singing as a child and he had learned how to play guitar by the time he was eight. He was singing on a Charleston, West Virginia radio station within a year. He formed his first group, a bluegrass band, at age 13.

A few years later, he formed the Lonesome Mountain Boys with friend Ricky Skaggs. They mostly played Stanley Brothers songs and they built a local fan base over time. Little did they know they'd wind up playing with their idol.

    The Clinch Mountain Boys
Ralph Stanley was looking to put his band back together in 1969 following the death of his brother and bandmate, Carter. He asked Whitley and Skaggs to join his group, the Clinch Mountain Boys. Whitley and Skaggs accepted the offer and started appearing with the band the following year. Whitley performed with the Clinch Mountain Boys for the next two years and they recorded seven albums, including Crying From the Cross, which was named Bluegrass Album of the Year in 1971.

Whitley left the group in 1973 and spent the next few years hopping from band to band, only to return to the Clinch Mountain Boys in 1975. He stayed with them for two more years. They issued a whopping five new albums, then Whitley left the group a second time in 1978 to join the New South, J.D. Crowe's Band. The group combined bluegrass and country and released three albums between 1978 and 1982.

    Whitley's Solo Career
Whitley left the New South in 1982 and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 in hopes of launching a solo career. He signed with RCA Records and released his first solo effort, the Hard Act to Follow EP, in 1984. The honkytonk-heavy EP wasn't an ideal introduction, but he followed up in 1985 with L.A. to Miami. His debut album was undoubtedly his breakthrough and spawned the No. 14 single Miami, My Amy and the Top 10 hits Ten Feet Away, Homecoming '63 and Hard Livin'. He married fellow country star Lorrie Morgan the next year.

L.A. to Miami was a huge success, but Whitley wasn't a fan of the album's overly polished sound. He recorded his third solo effort in 1987, but he thought it sounded just as overdone as his last release and he convinced his label to shelve it.

Whitley then teamed up with a new producer, Garth Fundis, and the two went on to create 1988's Don't Close Your Eyes. It produced three No. 1 hit singles in a row: Don't Close Your Eyes, When You Say Nothing at All and I Wonder Do You Think of Me.

Sadly, Keith Whitley died at on May 9, 1989 in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A., leaving behind his wife Lorrie Morgan and son Jesse Keith Whitley.

'' When You Say Nothing at All

It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
Try as I may I could never explain
What I hear when you don't say a thing

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall
Now you say it best when you say nothing at all

All day long I can hear people talking out loud
But when you hold me near you drown out the crowd
Old Mister Webster could never define
What's being said between your heart and mine

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall
Now you say it best when you say nothing at allllllll ...

The smile on your face lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me
A touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall
Yeah, you say it best when you say nothing at all
