J.S: Bach/ Hribar Journey to Damascus

    7:55

is an improvisation on J. S. Bach's holy cross theme (in this case e,c,f,g#) and arabic sounding effects. In 2006 I travelled through Syria and was hypnotised by the arabic culture; not only the unforgettable landscape and delicious food, but also warmth and friendliness of the people and the mixture of different religions. In Damascus, I saw a church and Mosque built next to each other and so in this piece, I was wanted to somehow unite the spiritual elements of these religions in music. It also reminded me of the Mosque-cathedral of Córdoba which was once a church, then became a mosque and now is a church agin. This piece is dedicated to Dr. Bettina Engelke and visual artist Wolfgang Tiemann with whom I travelled.I’m basically playing a prelude by Bach (, A min book 2) in between there is some improv which is supposed to represent the struggle between Christianity and Islam and attempts to unite the spiritual aspects of the music..

Dietrich Buxtehude - Suite D-minor, BuxWV 233 - Transcribed for guitar

    10:01

    Suite D-mol, BuxWV 233

Transcribed for guitar and played by Per Dybro Sørensen.
Recorded 2002-3 in Boholte Church, Køge, Denmark.

    Dietrich Buxtehude: Scandinavian cantatas
One of the greatest Danish composers

Who is the most significant Danish composer ever? Yes, if it comes to international distribution and the historical influence, then not Carl Nielsen-but Dietrich Buxtehude.
He lived in the 17th century and was widely renowned as both composer and organ player. Bach was one of his major supporters, another was Handel. It says something about the quality of Buxtehudes music and about the influence he had on his contemporary.
Where Buxtehude was born, has been discussed in eternity. Today is considered that he was born in Helsingborg, which at the time in 1637 was a Danish city. Another possibility is Helsingør. Then hang the Oresund region even closer together than they are today, because the whole country was Danish, under the Danish King.
Will be considered to be a German Like his father worked Buxtehude as organist in both cities. However, in 1667, he was offered the post of organist at the shores of the Maria Church, and that he was the rest of his days. It is the works from the time in Lübeck, who drew the picture of Buxtehude for posterity, and abroad, many expect him to be a German.

Prelude in Eb Major for Harp

    2:49

The first book of J. S. Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier) was complete by 1722. Bach gave the present title to the work, which was composed for the use and practice of musical youth eager to learn and for the amusement of those already skilled in this study. Bach composed a paired Prelude and Fugue in each of the 24 keys to demonstrate the viability of the new equal-temperament system, which allows one to play in all keys without producing out-of-tune intervals, as happened with Pythagorean and mean tone tunings. Furthermore, the pieces are as much compositional studies as keyboard works.

Twenty years later, Bach assembled another set of preludes and fugues. The title page is missing from the manuscript, but its similarity to the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier led editors to entitle it Book II. Bach worked on the second book over a long period of time, even reworking pieces he had written for other purposes, as he had in the first book. Some of the preludes and fugues date from the 1720s. Possibly the most substantial revision for the second book was to No. 3, in C sharp major, which was originally in C major. Fugues Nos. 15 and 17 survive in earlier versions in which they are connected with different preludes than we find in The Well-Tempered Clavier.

There are many musical differences between the works of Book II and those of Book I. The preludes in the second group explore a greater range of forms and styles than do the earlier examples. Most striking are the experiments in the style of the Italian bipartite keyboard sonata, codified by Domenico Scarlatti. Like earlier dance movements, these consist of two repeated sections. Some of the sonata preludes in Book II, such as Nos. 5, 12, and 21, feature a recapitulation of the opening material, while others (Nos. 10 and 15) have parallel closing sections. Prelude No. 17 is an Italian concert-ritornello movement; Nos. 13 and 23 also display concerto traits. The tenth is a two-part invention and Nos. 4 and 14 are ariosos. Those that are clearly derived form dance forms -- No. 5 from the gigue and No. 8 from the allemande -- lack the traditional binary form.

Graceful ornamental notes, specifically appoggiaturas, characterize this especially lyrical prelude, which takes the form of a loure. It leads into an alla breve fugue, a canzona evoking the old, harmonically pure style of Palestrina. The fugue's four voices enter in ascending order, the subject seeming to test the water with its first two notes, then splashing steadily along through free counterpoint.

J.S.Bach Sonata in G Minor, last movement, arr. for Alto Sax

    2:28

Originally for the flute this is John Harle transcription for the Eb Alto Saxophone.
This three-movement Sonata was originally written for Violin and Piano. The music is attributed to J.S. Bach but there is some doubt as to whether Bach himself composed this work and some believe the author was J.S. Bach's filth son, Carl Philipp. This edition is transcribed for Alto Saxophone in Eb with Piano accompaniment.

Praludium in D Minor for Viola & Cello

    1:55

The Well-Tempered Clavier (German: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier), BWV 846–893, is a collection of solo keyboard music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. He gave the title to a book of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, dated 1722, composed for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study. Bach later compiled a second book of the same kind, dated 1742, with the title Twenty-four Preludes and Fugues. The two works are now considered to make up a single work, The Well-Tempered Clavier, or the 48, and are referred to as The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I and The Well-Tempered Clavier Book II, respectively. This collection is generally regarded as being among the most influential works in the history of Western classical music.

The Prelude No. 6 in D minor (BWV 874) is from second book of the Well-tempered Clavier and is a didactic two-voice polyphonic piece of work, is dazzlingly fast, powerful and tense throughout, capturing the audience’s attention right from the beginning and keeping them mesmerized till the end.

Although originally written for keyboard, I created this transcription for Viola and Cello.

Helmut Walcha (* 27. Oktober 1907 in Leipzig; † 11.
