Peter Gabriel - Dont Give Up

    6:30

The official Don't Give Up video. Directed by Godley and Creme.

A standout track from Peter's fifth studio album and the first one to have a proper title: So was a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

Aside from some intriguing collaborations – with Laurie Anderson on This Is The Picture, Kate Bush on Don’t Give Up and Youssou N’Dour on In Your Eyes – it was the unity of singer, band and producer that made So such a crucial record in the Gabriel canon.

In this proud land we grew up strong
    We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
But no-one wants you when you lose

Don't give up 'cause you have friends
Don't give up you're not beaten yet
Don't give up I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
Never thought that I could be affected
Thought that we'd be last to go
It is so strange the way things turn
Drove the night toward my home
The place that I was born, on the lakeside
As daylight broke, I saw the earth
The trees had burned down to the ground

Don't give up you still have us
Don't give up we don't need much of anything
Don't give up 'cause somewhere there's a place where we belong

    Rest your head
    You worry too much
    It's going to be alright
    When times get rough
You can fall back on us
    Don't give up
    Please don't give up

Got to walk out of here
    I can't take anymore
Going to stand on that bridge
    Keep my eyes down below
    Whatever may come
    and whatever may go
    That river's flowing
    That river's flowing

    Moved on to another town
    Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
    So many men no-one needs

Don't give up 'cause you have friends
Don't give up you're not the only one
Don't give up no reason to be ashamed
Don't give up you still have us
Don't give up now we're proud of who you are
Don't give up you know it's never been easy
    Don't give up 'cause I believe there's a place
    There's a place
    Where we belong

    Don't give up
    Don't give up
    Don't give up

    Kate Bush - Wow

    3:45

    Kate Bush - Wow

    Emily...

We're all alone on the stage tonight.
We've been told we're not afraid of you.
We know all our lines so well, uh-huh.
We've said them so many times:
    Time and time again,
    Line and line again.

    Ooh, yeah, you're amazing!
    We think you're incredible.
    You say we're fantastic,
But still we don't head the bill.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Unbelievable!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Unbelievable!

When the actor reaches his death,
You know it's not for real. He just holds his breath.
But he always dives too soon, too fast to save himself.

    He'll never make the screen.
    He'll never make the 'Sweeney',
    Be that movie queen.
He's too busy hitting the vaseline.

    Ooh, yeah, you're amazing!
We think you are really cool.
We'd give you a part, my love,
But you'd have to play the fool.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Unbelievable!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Unbelievable!

We're all alone on the stage tonight.
    We're all alone,
    On the stage,
    Tonight.

    Kate Bush -This Womans Work

    3:43

    This woman's work
    (Written by Kate Bush)

    Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside this woman's work,
    This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
    Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
    That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
    That we never did.
All the things I should've given,
    But I didn't.

    Oh, darling, make it go,
    Make it go away.

    Give me these moments back.
    Give them back to me.
    Give me that little kiss.
    Give me your hand.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
    That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
    That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
    But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

    Kate Bush - Babooshka 1980

    3:23

    Kate Bush - Babooshka 1980

She wanted to test her husband.
She knew exactly what to do:
    A pseudonym to fool him.
She couldn't have made a worse move.

    She sent him scented letters,
And he received them with a strange delight.
    Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful.
    She signed the letter

    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!

She wanted to take it further,
So she arranged a place to go,
    To see if he
    Would fall for her incognito.
And when he laid eyes on her,
He got the feeling they had met before.
    Uncanny how she
Reminds him of his little lady,
Capacity to give him all he needs,
Just like his wife before she freezed on him,
Just like his wife when she was beautiful.
    He shouted out,

    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!

    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!

Kate Bush - And Dream of Sheep - Official Video

    3:42

This is a special piece of film to accompany the release of the live single ‘And Dream Of Sheep’. The vocal was performed live while filming Kate lying in the huge water tank at Pinewood Studios. This was to create a sense of realism, as the character in the song is lost at sea. However it became more realistic than Kate had imagined. She spent so long in the water during the first day of filming that she contracted mild hypothermia. She recovered after a day off and carried on filming. Everyone agreed it had added to the authenticity of the performance. This film was then projected onto a large oval screen which hung above the stage during the performances of her live show.

    Lyrics:

    Moving stranger,
    Does it really matter,
As long as you're not afraid to feel?
    Touch me, hold me.
    How my open arms ache!
    Try to fall for me.

    How I'm moved.
    How you move me
    With your beauty's potency.
    You give me life.
    Please don't let me go.
You crush the lily in my soul.

    Moving liquid--
Yes, you are just as water.
You flow around all that comes in your way.
    Don't think it over,
    It always takes you over,
    And sets your spirit dancing.

    How I'm moved.
    How you move me
    With your beauty's potency.
    You give me life.
    Please don't let me go.

Kate Bush - Army Dreamers 1980

Kate Bush - Army Dreamers 1980

    Our little army boy
    Is coming home from B.F.P.O.
I've a bunch of purple flowers
    To decorate a mammy's hero.

    Mourning in the aerodrome,
The weather warmer, he is colder.
    Four men in uniform
To carry home my little soldier.

    What could he do?
Should have been a rock star.
But he didn't have the money for a guitar.
    What could he do?
    Should have been a politician.
But he never had a proper education.
    What could he do?
    Should have been a father.
But he never even made it to his twenties.
    What a waste -
    Army dreamers.
    Ooh, what a waste of
    Army dreamers.

    Tears o'er a tin box.
Oh, Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know,
Like a chicken with a fox,
He couldn't win the war with ego.
Give the kid the pick of pips,
And give him all your stripes and ribbons.
Now he's sitting in his hole,
He might as well have buttons and bows.

Ooh, what a waste of all that
    Army dreamers,
    Army dreamers,
    Army dreamers, oh

    (B.F.P.O.)
    Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum...
    Army dreamers.
    Did-n-did-n-did-n-dum...
    (Mammy's hero.)
    (B.F.P.O.)
    Army Dreamers.
    (Mammy's hero.)
    (B.F.P.O.)
    No harm heroes.
    (Mammy's hero.)
    (B.F.P.O.)
    Army dreamers.
    (Mammy's hero.)

Kate Bush Babooshka In Venice Italy 1980

    3:49

Kate Bush performs Babooshka in Venice, Italy, in 1980.

Kate went to Venice and performed Babooshka with Gary Hurst, in a song festival called Gondola d'oro, aired on Italian TV in September 1980.

This clip comes from my private collection. The audio have been tidied up, cause the original one was really dreadful !
    I hope you enjoy it!

Here Kate's description about Babooshka performance in Venice, from the Kate Bush Club Newsletter:

Babooshka, again, was to be performed abroad, this time in Venice. Venice is an extremely beautiful place, and if you ever get the chance to see it, please do, it really is magical. Water is the way of everything there--even lampposts are on water. I took lots of photos, and we've included one of a canal. The hotel that we were staying at was beautiful, with an incredible view of the ocean out of my window. For this TV show Gary [Hurst] and I had rehearsed a duet which we had made up the night before. Often this has strangely good results; maybe it is due to adrenalin. Gary had hired a suit from Moss Bros. the day before, and I'd pulled out an old dress which I used to wear when I was in the KT Bush Band and we performed in pubs. This TV show was live, and as the studio was only across the road (the other side of the hotel backed onto one of the few pieces of dry land in Venice), every performer dressed and made up at the hotel and walked to the TV studio fully equipped .
Our turn came, and as we hit the street we saw silver-suited spacemen; red-, blue-, green-haired people; electric guitars; pantomime horses; one yellow submarine and two dancing bears spilling in and out of the TV centre. We squeezed past the various brightly coloured suits and smiles, did our bit and squeezed past them again on the way back to the hotel. In many ways it reminded me of Noah's Ark: two of every kind in a place on the water.
Just as we entered the hotel we met Peter Gabriel, plus band, who were also on the same show and were on their way out. We exchanged very English greetings on foreign land: Break a leg, old chap!; and Peter headed on his way to the bizarre circus. Meanwhile, we had heard that there was a TV room upstairs, so we rushed up to a mini-circus where all the artists that had already performed were sprayed around the floor, glued to the television, expressing kind words of comradeship in the relevant language to whomever was on the screen at that point in time; an unusual live, friendly feeling. Peter's performance was powerful and stood out amongst all the others, and the viewing-room certainly seemed to agree.

Kate Bush - And Dream Of Sheep, Hounds Of Love (1985)

    Lyrics :

    Little light shining,
Little light will guide them to me.
My face is all lit up,
My face is all lit up.
If they find me racing white horses,
They'll not take me for a buoy.

    Let me be weak,
    Let me sleep
    And dream of sheep.

Attention shipping information in sea areas...Bell Rock, Tiree,
    Cromaty, gale east...Malin, Sellafield...

    Come here with me now.

    Oh, I'll wake up
    To any sound of engines,
    Ev'ry gull a seeking craft.
I can't keep my eyes open-
    Wish I had my radio.

I tune in to some friendly voices
    Talking 'bout stupid things.
I can't be left to my imagination.

    Let me be weak,
    Let me sleep
    And dream of sheep.

    Ooh, their breath is warm
    And they smell like sleep,
And they say they take me home.
    Like poppies heavy with seed
They take me deeper and deeper.

Given by a Kate fan. I have totally no idea where these fascinating outtakes are originated from. There seem to be other versions that are different in editing and (probably) sources of materials.

    Kate Bush: Not This Time

    3:41

One of this English Rose's lesser known songs, but one of my favorites. Thanks to the many people who made photos of Kate available on the web; most of those shown here are from her most prolific years during the 1980s.

    Kate Bush- Moments of pleasure

    5:20

    Moments of pleasure
    (Written by Kate Bush)

    Some moments that I've had
    Some moments of pleasure

    I think about us lying
    Lying on a beach somewhere
    I think about us diving
Diving off a rock, into another moment

The case of George the Wipe
Oh God I can't stop laughing
This sense of humour of mine
    It isn't funny at all
Oh but we sit up all night
    Talking about it

    Just being alive
    It can really hurt
    And these moments given
    Are a gift from time

On a balcony in New York
    It's just started to snow
He meets us at the lift
    Like Douglas Fairbanks
    Waving his walking stick
But he isn't well at all
    The buildings of New York
Look just like mountains through the snow

    Just being alive
    It can really hurt
    And these moments given
    Are a gift from time
    Just let us try
    To give these moments back
    To those we love
    To those who will survive

And I can hear my mother saying
Every old sock meets an old shoe
    Isn't that a great saying?
Every old sock meets an old shoe
Here come the Hills of Time

    Hey there Maureen,

    Hey there Bubba,
Dancing down the aisle of a plane,

'S Murph, playing his guitar refrain,

    Hey there Teddy,
Spinning in the chair at Abbey Road,

    Hey there Michael,
    Do you really love me?

    Hey there Bill,
Could you turn the lights up?

Unedited US Kate Bush intervew from 1985 Part 4 of 5

    8:07

    Part 4 of 5

This interview is very rough visual quality, but is one of the best, most relaxed interviews Kate has ever given on video - in marked contrast to the Night Flight interview shot the next day. The interviewer was obviously familar with her work, had seen all of her previous videos and seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say. Kate's body language is pretty obvious in that she leans forward when she is receptive to the interviewer and leans back when she's not enjoying the process - this video she's leaning forward so much that she's resting her chin on her hand during the latter part of the video.

I'm sorry the quality is so bad, but I've never seen a better quality copy. If you have a better one, I'd love to get a copy. I have a very large collection of Kate video and would be happy to arrange a trade.

The song is called Mná na hÉireann which translates to Women of Ireland. Thank you to those who mentioned the title of the song in their comments, really appreciated.

Night Of The Swallow performed by Cloudbusting

    5:34

Surely one of the greatest songs from one of the bravest albums ever written! And what a joy to perform it here, for the first time, at The Islington Assembly Hall as part of our celebration of 40 Years of Kate Bush.

A big 'thank you' to our wonderful backing singers Julia Krajewska and Nadie Keating.
