  • Julie Murphy : Kathleen

    4:19

Julie Murphy was born in Highgate, London, but spent her formative years in Romford, Essex. Her family was originally from Blackpool, Lancashire. She attended Maidstone College of Art and subsequently moved to Wales. Murphy sings in Welsh and English. She sings in the Welsh band Fernhill, as well as performing and recording as a solo artist. She has also collaborated musically with John Cale (performing with him in the film Beautiful Mistake), and Afro Celt Sound System (in a duet with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin). Her rendition of the Townes Van Zandt song, Kathleen, is from Julie's most recent release, A Quiet House and features the harp playing of
    Ceri Owen Jones.

Julie Murphy is a towering talent, both in traditional music and as a singer-songwriter. -Dafydd Goff, The Guardian

    Setlist:
    Number Six Driver
    The Best Of Me
    Old Dominion

Too energetic to be labeled just folk, and not angry enough to be pegged alternative, Eddie from Ohio continues to defy description with their unique blend of vocals and acoustic instrumentation. A bedrock foundation of hand and stick percussion and a textural flavoring of guitar/bass/harmonica support the four-part harmonies and lyrically-driven original music. While this combination has drawn comparisons like the Grateful Dead meets Peter, Paul & Mary, or like Jewel fronts the Bare Naked Ladies, EFO fuses a multitude of musical influences to create their own trademark sound. Performing Songwriter writes, The manic strumminess recalls Ani DiFranco or Dave Matthews, but there's also a deep undercurrent of high, lonesome mountain harmony that should appeal to fans of Alison Krauss and Union Station.

With this trademark sound, EFO has produced nine CDs independently (selling upwards of 150,000 copies to date), toured from Florida to Washington State, cultivated massive postal and email lists, received air play from hundreds of radio stations worldwide, been invited to play the Main Stage at prestigious festivals like Philadelphia Folk, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (Hillsdale, NY), Telluride Bluegrass Festival (CO) and Strawberry Music Festival (CA), appeared on syndicated radio programs Mountain Stage, West Coast Live and World Cafe, & were awarded Best Contemporary Folk Group by the Washington Area Music Association six times since 1997.

Not bad for a Virginia-based band that began in 1991 playing covers in neighborhood bars when three James Madison University graduates (Robbie Schaefer, Eddie Hartness & Michael Clem) teamed up with Virginia Tech alumnae Julie Murphy (now Murphy Wells). After a popular seven year Tuesday night residency at Bad Habits Grille in Arlington, VA, EFO graduated from town taverns to renowned listening rooms and concert series throughout the country, where their tight harmonies and humorous lyrics, set against an eclectic array of musical forms, can be featured to best advantage. Since signing with a national booking agent in 1996, the band has covered the country, from The Somerville Theater outside of Boston to The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

The band continues to perform but on a more limited basis since September, 2005 when vocalist Wells was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, after an intense year of chemotherapy, Wells is on the road to recovery and remains active in cancer cure fundraising. In 2006, bassist/guitarist Clem released his first solo CD (produced by Hartness), and guitarist Schaefer has found quite a calling in children's music, having produced a successful CD and hosting a nightly satellite radio show on XMKids, as well as putting out a new solo CD in December 2008, Strange & Lovely World. Percussionist Hartness continues to keep the beat for a number of local acts and stays active in the world of audio engineering.

Wherever and whenever the four reconvene on the stage, an EFO show is always an experience to remember.

  • Martin Simpson- Sammys Bar

    4:23

Martin Simpson was born in Scunthorpe, England. He took an early interest in music, learning to play the guitar and banjo and performing at local folk clubs. In 1970, he dropped out of college to become a full-time musician.
In 1976 he recorded his first solo album Golden Vanity. In the same year he opened for Steeleye Span on their UK tour. Martin also toured and performed with folk singer June Tabor, who did not play an instrument herself. They would later record three albums together.
In 1985 he moved to Bloomington, Indiana and married American singer Jessica Radcliffe, and shortly afterwards they relocated to Ithaca, New York. During the decade he continued recording a mix of traditional and more contemporary material, including several entirely instrumental albums.
Notable work in the 1990s included work with Chinese pipa play Wu Man, with whom Simpson recorded a duet Music of the Motherless Child, a blend of European and Chinese traditions. In a similar vein was Kambara Music in Native Tongues with David Hidalgo from Los Lobos and violinist Viji Krishnan, a mix of Hindu and contemporary songs.
Not until 1999 did he record several of his own compositions on Bootleg USA. It was then, along with Jessica Racliffe, that he co-founded a record label called High Bohemia. Perhaps suffering from homesickness, he visited the UK in 1994, recording Martin Simpson Live in Oxford. In 1999 he was a session musician for an album by Welsh singer Julie Murphy. The Bramble Briar (2001) was a turn to basics, a collection of British traditional folk songs.

2003 saw the release of Righteousness and Humidity, a set focusing almost exclusively on music from the Deep South, played on a variety of instruments and featuring Steeleye Span's Rick Kemp. This recording was a nominee for BBC folk awards album of the year in 2004. Simpson won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2004 in the category of Best Musician.[1] This was followed in 2005 by Kind Letters in which he mines once again the rich seams of English folk music which proved so fruitful for The Bramble Briar.

In 2007 Simpson released Prodigal Son. The 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards voted it as best album. The fRoots critics poll voted it as the 7th best new album of 2007. It is a mixture of traditional songs and Simpson originals, the highlights of which possess a distinctly southern American flavor. Jackson Browne, Kate Rusby and Kellie While guest star here. In December 2007 he performed on Later... with Jools Holland.

Simpson has written guitar instruction books and recorded DVD guitar tutorials. His career came full circle in 2003 when he teamed up with June Tabor again. In 2004 he surprised everyone by performing at a gig in Nettlebed, Oxford, where he played banjo all evening, without touching a guitar. A readers' poll of the magazine Acoustic Guitar voted him as number 12 in the world in 2005. Martin is now married to Kit Bailey, the daughter of the singer Roy Bailey, with whom Martin occasionally performs. Martin and Kit now live in Sheffield and have a young daughter, Molly. Along with Martin Taylor, Simon Mayor, Doyle Dykes, Gordon Giltrap and Julie Ellison, he writes for the magazine Acoustic.

Performances of note to the general public include a 2007 appearance on Jools Holland's BBC show and a half hour set at The Proms on 20 July 2008 broadcast on BBC4.
He has been nominated 23 times in the 11 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including nine times consecutively as Artist of The Year, which he has won twice. His album Prodigal Son was named album of the year in 2008 and a song from that album, Never Any Good was named best original song of the year.

Martin Simpson is regarded by many as one of the most skilled folk guitarists currently playing on the British and American folk scene.

MARK MURPHY. Two-night appearance at the Kitano, New York City, USA.

This is a performance from August 1, 2009.

Once again the Precious One showered us with his vibrant voice. Looking handsome and dapper as usual, Mr. Murphy was clad in impeccable head-to-toe garb on both nights. Each evening, he set the mood from the very first note and conducted our heartstrings through to the very last note!

As only Mr. Murphy can, he sings the words FIRST before he applies them to melody. And as he applies them to melody, we eagerly wait for his phrasing ..... and then, enter the inflections in his voice ..... one is engaged by layer upon layer of intrigue! After studying his work for decades, one clearly understands how Mr. Murphy has singularly re-arranged the landscape of vocal jazz. Time and time again, he shows us where it's at, and how it ought to be.

Both nights at the Kitano were sold out. Many from the music industry were in attendance. Mr. Murphy's rendition of Photograph in particular, left not a dry eye in the house! Compared to some of his contemporaries, it was incredibly moving to experience Mr. Murphy maintain the same eloquent performance he's noted for!

Mr. Murphy ....... you are a gem! May you always be blessed with the best life has to offer!

Vocals: MARK MURPHY. Piano: JON COWHERD. Bass: BORIS KOZLOV. Drums: WILLARD DYSON.

All Blues is a Miles Davis composition.

  • Fly Me To the Moon - Peter Cupples

    3:43

Produced and presented by Alessandro Sorbello Peter Cupples performs a Tribute to Frank Sinatra with 'Fly Me To The Moon

Peter Cupples performed this track to a small group of friends in Brisbane Australia in October 2007. Peter opened for Frank Sinatra when in 1988 Sanctuary Cove Resort Opened, the first gated tourism and residential precinct in Australia. Frank Sinatra, Peter Allen, and Whitney Houston sang at the complex's lavish opening in 1988, an event that placed it squarely on the map.

One of Australia's leading singer songwriters Peter Cupples was the lead singer of the 70's hit band Stylus.

Fly Me to the Moon is a pop standard song written in 1954 by Bart Howard. When introduced by Felicia Sanders on the cabaret circuit, it was originally titled In Other Words. The song became popularly called Fly Me to the Moon from its first line, but it took a few years for the publishers to change the title officially.

It was first recorded in 1954 by Kaye Ballard (of the television show The Mothers-in-Law). Ballard's 1954 version was released by Decca Records as catalog number 29114. In 1956 it was recorded by Portia Nelson for her album, Let Me Love You. The same year, Johnny Mathis recorded the song, the first time the title Fly Me to the Moon appeared on a record label.

Felicia Sanders, the original singer of the song (best known for her vocal on the Percy Faith Orchestra's Song From Moulin Rouge (Where Is Your Heart)), finally got around to recording the song in 1959. It was released on Decca Records as catalog number 30937.

In 1962, an instrumental version was recorded as Fly Me to the Moon -- Bossa Nova by Joe Harnell, which became the biggest chart hit version of the song, reaching #14 on the U.S. pop singles charts.

Frank Sinatra recorded the song in 1964 on his It Might as Well Be Swing collaboration with Count Basie, and this became the rendition that many people identified the song with.

Tony Bennett recorded the song in 1965 and had a minor hit with it. In subsequent years through the 2000s, he often performed the song in concert without using any amplification or sound system.

It has also been performed by Paul Anka, Shirley Bassey, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Bobby Darin, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Groove Armada, Joni James, Jack Jones, Julie London, Bobby Womack, Al Hirt, Diana Krall, Mabel Mercer (1960), Wes Montgomery, Anita O'Day, KT Sullivan (1997), Sarah Vaughn, Tom Jones, the Irish boyband Westlife, Nancy Wilson (1959), Matt Dusk, Agnetha Fältskog, Paul Gilbert, Claire Littley (the original ending theme of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion), Utada Hikaru, Astrud Gilberto, hellogoodbye, Ray Quinn, Dinah Washington, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Haden, Michael Bolton, Paula Toller and many others.

In film, Fly Me to the Moon was used as the theme song of Oliver Stone's Wall Street (1987), under the last frames of Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys (2000) (in Sinatra's version), and was performed by Jay Mohr in Eddie Murphy's The Adventures of Pluto Nash. It is also the main song of the 1991 film Once Around, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter and Danny Aiello, who also performs a rendition during the wedding scene.

Thomas Anders (of Modern Talking fame) recorded his version in 1997 on the album Live Concert.

The song is also the ending theme of the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, in several remixed versions and performed by multiple people, most notably the famous Japanese seiyū Megumi Hayashibara and Yuko Miyamura (all in English). The song has been remixed again and sung by Utada Hikaru for the trailer of the first movie in the Rebuild of Evangelion series of films, You Are (Not) Alone.

In episode 369 of the The Simpsons, The Seemingly Never-Ending Story, Fly Me to the Moon is played during Moe and Edna's love montage, and Moe later refers to it as their song.

On American Idol season 6, Top 20 contestant, Nick Pedro sang a rendition of Fly Me To The Moon at his audition in New York.

In the series finale of 3rd Rock From the Sun, Elvis Costello sang Fly Me to the Moon at a farewell party the aliens threw for themselves.

Versions of song by Frank Sinatra and Felicia Sanders were played simultaneously in Down With Love as Barbara (Renée Zellweger) and Zip (Ewan McGregor) got ready for their date with each other.

A special thank you to my friend Erik Johansen (Tape8) who edited Peters performance -
