  • DAVID HAMILTON: A Small Garden of Songs 1 & 5

    10:39

DAVID HAMILTON: A Small Garden of Songs 1 & 5

In David Hamilton’s ‘A Small Garden of Songs’ the composer sought unity in his settings of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses” by focussing on aspects of time: day and night, summer, the sun and the moon.

In this Resound film, songs 1 and 5 - ‘Summer Sun’ and ‘Night and Day’ are performed by Helen Acheson (mezzo-soprano), Miranda Adams (violin) and Sarah Watkins (piano) as part of the Auckland Chamber Orchestra’s David Hamilton composer portrait concert.

    Audio recorded by RNZ Concert.

Resound is funded by NZ On Air.

  • Irina-Kalina Goudeva / Recomenzar El Infinito / Menada by Julia Tsenova / Trailer

    4:54

Menada by Julia Tsenova / Trailer

The theatrical piece Menada for voice, double bass and choreography (one performer), is scored in a multi-layered way, requiring an active theatrical presence. The mise-en-scene and compositional decisions are dictated by the physical and spiritual transfiguration of the Mythological Snake into the mythical Goddess Menada. Unpredictable and dangerous, in a state of trance Menada communicates with Gods and mythical beings, from capricious Satyrs to ordinary mortals.
In an act of ecstasy, she transcends the limits of life in order to discover, with curiosity or disillusionment, her own painful presence in the realm beyond. Her body is the sound - its projection, energy, speed, vibration, dynamic, color and mystic. She discovers the bass (He, masculine energy) and twists herself around him, trying to find a way of communication in order to seduce him. They are becoming very charmed with each other in this game and follow it with a great liberty and variety of expression. Going through different emotional states and reaching extremity in trance, they are devoured by the erotic / creative energy and the desire to find a new dimension and liberty beyond limits.

The piece is written for Irina-Kalina Goudeva
