    About Best Classical Music:

    Hi!
I’m Andrei, a fan of classical music. One day, I asked my friends if they knew about Felix Mendelssohn, a very popular composer, but no one of them had never heard his name. Today, people listen to multiple types of music, but only some listen to masterpieces of classical music. When I say masterpiece, I don’t mean Beethoven or Mozart, but hundreds of composers that the world has forgotten about. I find sad that nobody knows about them, so I decided to use YouTube to teach and inform people about these beautiful masterpieces that are waiting for someone to listen to them. Every day, I publish a new video centered around one of them, with a little explanation, and the masterpiece itself, because I think everybody deserves to know and enjoy classical masterpieces.

Under the Double Eagle (Unter dem Doppeladler) is a march composed by Josef Franz Wagner (1856 1908). He was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer, sometimes known by the sobriquet 'The Austrian March King'. This march is referring to the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

  • Richard Wagner - Tannhäuser, Ouverture

    21:36

Overture from Tannhäuser and Chor der Sirenen. Tannhäuser (full title, Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg), is a german opera in three acts, music and text by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), based on the two German legends of Tannhäuser and the song contest at Wartburg. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's mature work.
Heinrich Heine had provided Wagner with the inspiration for Der fliegende Holländer. Wagner drew on Heine for the plot of Tannhäuser: Heine's sardonic poem Elementargeister, telling of the lure of the grotto of Venus, was published in 1837 in Der Salon. Wagner also drew material from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story The Singer's Contest and Ludwig Tieck's 1799 story Faithful Eckhart and Tannhäuser. Other possible sources include the 15th century folk ballad Das Lied von dem Danheüser and Ludwig von Bechstein's collection of Thuringian legends Der Sagenschatz und die Sagenkreise des Thüringerlandes. Wagner wrote the prose draft of Tannhäuser between June and July 1842 and the libretto in April 1843.
The libretto of Tannhäuser combines the mythological element of German opera and the medieval history of French Grand Opera. Wagner brings these two together by constructing a plot involving the 14th century Minnesingers and the myth of Venus and her realm of Venusberg ('the mountain of Venus'). Both the historical and the mythological are united in Tannhäuser's personality; although he is a historical poet composer, little is known about him other than myths that surround him. Furthermore, half of the opera takes place in a historical setting, and half takes place in the mythological Venusberg.
Wagner began composing the music during a vacation in Teplitz in the summer of 1843 and completed the full score on 13 April 1845; the opera's famous overture, often played separately as a concert piece, was written last. The instrumentation also shows signs of borrowing from French operatic style. The score includes parts for on-stage brass; however, rather than using French brass instruments, Wagner uses twelve German waldhorns. Wagner also makes use of the harp, another commonplace of French opera.
The first performance was given in the Royal Theater in Dresden on 19 October 1845. The composer Ferdinand Hiller, at that time a friend of the composer, assisted in the musical preparations for the production. The part of Elizabeth was sung by Wagner's niece Johanna Wagner. Wagner had intended to premiere the opera on 13 October, Johanna's 19th birthday, but she was ill, so it was postponed for six days. Venus was created by Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, and the title role was taken by Josef Tichatschek. The performance was conducted by the composer. Tannhäuser was not the success that Rienzi had been, and Wagner almost immediately set to modifying the ending, tinkering with the score through 1846 and 1847. There were performances in Schwerin, Breslau, Freiburg, Wiesbaden [1852]; Frankfurt/M., Riga, Leipzig, Poznan, Darmstadt, Hamburg, Königsberg, Köln [1853]; Graz and Prague [1854]
This version of the opera, as revised for publication in 1860 (including some changes to the final scene) is generally known as the Dresden version.
Wagner substantially amended the opera for a special 1861 performance by the Paris Opéra. This had been requested by Emperor Napoleon III at the suggestion of Princess Pauline von Metternich, wife of the Austrian ambassador to France. This revision forms the basis of what is now known as the Paris version of Tannhäuser.
Wagner had originally hoped the Parisian première would take place at the Théâtre Lyrique. However, the première was at the Paris Opéra, so the composer had to insert a ballet into the score, according to the traditions of the house. Wagner agreed to this condition since he believed that a success at the Opéra represented his most significant opportunity to re-establish himself following his exile from Germany. However, rather than put the ballet in its traditional place in Act II, he chose to place it in Act I, where it could at least make some dramatic sense by representing the sensual world of Venus's realm. Thus in Tannhäuser the ballet takes the form of a bacchanale.

Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as The Waltz King, and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. Strauss was admired by other prominent composers: Richard Wagner once admitted that he liked the waltz Wein, Weib und Gesang Op. 333. Johannes Brahms was a personal friend of Strauss; the latter dedicated his waltz Be Embraced, You Millions!, Op. 443, to him.

  • Josef Franz Wagner: Tyrolean Woodchopper Boys March for Brass Band

    3:41

    Tiroler Holzhacker Baub'n
Josef Franz Wagner was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer. Known as The Austrian March King, he is best known for his 1902 march Unter dem Doppeladler or Under the Double Eagle, referring to the double eagle in the coat of arms of Austria-Hungary. This march, Tyrolean Woodchopper Boys, captures the scenic beauty of the Tyrol region, if not the spirit of the Tyrolean people. The trio cleverly imitates the zvu-ba, zvu-ba of the saw blade as the woodcutters merrily attend to their work.

  • Anton Bruckner - Symphony No. 4 Romantic

    58:36

Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major is one of the composer's most popular works. It was written in 1874 and revised several times through 1888. It was dedicated to Prince Konstantin of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst. It was premiered in 1881 by Hans Richter in Vienna with great success.
The symphony's nickname of Romantic was used by the composer himself. It does not refer to the modern conception of romantic love but rather the medieval romance as depicted in the operas Lohengrin and Siegfried of Richard Wagner.
    The symphony has four movements:

    I. Bewegt, nicht zu schnell (0:09)
    II. Andante, quasi allegretto (15:25)
III. Scherzo. Bewegt - Trio: Nicht zu schnell (29:05)
IV. Finale: Bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell (40:00)

  • Josef Labor - Piano Quintet in E minor, Op. 3

    - Composer: Josef Paul Labor (29 June 1842 -- 26 April 1924)
    - Performers: Oliver Triendl (piano), Cecilia Zilliacus (violin), Hiyoli Togawa (viola), Valentin Radutiu (cello), Zoran Marković (double bass)
    - Year of recording: 2013 (Live in Kempten, Germany)

Quintet for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass in E minor, Op. 3, written in 1880.

    00:00 - I. Allegro
10:24 - II. Scherzo (Allegro vivace)
    16:01 - III. Andante
27:25 - IV. Allegro ma non troppo

Czech composer Josef Labor was born in the town of Hořovice in Bohemia, at the age of three he was left blind due to contracting smallpox. Labor knew and was on friendly terms with virtually every musician of importance in Vienna as well as many others living elsewhere, including Brahms, Richard Strauss, Bruckner, Clara Schumann, Gustav Mahler and Bruno Walter.

This piano quintet is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass: the so called “Trout” instrumentation, taking its name from Schubert’s famous Trout Piano Quintet for the same combination [uploaded on this channel]. The impetus for it, no doubt, was Labor’s friendship with Frantisek {Franz} Simandl, a fellow Czech who was a virtuoso bassist whom most considered to be the equal of Dragonetti. Simandl was solo bassist with the Vienna Philharmonic for over 30 years and died in 1912 after a protracted illness. Labor dedicated the work to Simandl as a tribute and it is one of the few such works where the bass has an extremely important part with many solo passages and chances to lead the group.

    - The four movement work begins with a powerful and sweeping Allegro. The parts are integrated seamlessly and the melodies are compelling.
    - Next comes a playful, light-hearted Scherzo, Allegro vivace, with two highly contrasting trios. The second trio is marked “Mit humor, basso buffo” and here the bass leads the entire way.
    - For vitually the first half of the third movement, Andante, the cello alone, with the support of only the piano and very occasionally the violin, sings the gorgeous and highly romantic main theme, surely one of the longest solos in the literature. In the middle section, the bass takes over with a somber and plodding, march-like melody which is then heightened with help from the viola. The movement ends with the bass taking the lead again.
    - The finale, Allegro ma non troppo, after a short thrusting introduction, begins with a hard driving and exciting theme which breaks loose with great forward motion. The bass is given powerful short solos bursting with energy as the moods alternate between dramatic and gentle romanticism. The works ends with a hyper dramatic and masterful coda.

The Piano Quintet is dedicated: Herrn Professor Franz Simandl zugeeignet.

  • Gebirgskinder, Walzer, Op. 444 - Carl Michael Ziehrer

    11:05

    New Videos Every Saturday!

Today i want to share with you the sheet or score of the vigorous and delicate waltz Gebirgskinder (Mountain Children) (Niños de las Montañas) by the genius and last king of waltz, Carl Michael Ziehrer. Incredible that this waltz is 125 years old! first published in 1892.

The Gebirgskinder Waltz is one of Ziehrer’s better known waltzes, with a zither solo introduction that is reminiscent at first of Johann Strauss’s Tales from the Vienna Woods, Op. 325. These days in concert performances the harp usually replaces the zither to equal effect, as in this recording. In the 1800s the zither was a very popular instrument which had a popular following and Ziehrer himself was an Honorary member of the Zither Society that existed at the time. Many of his works were arranged for this instrument, often by the composer and arranger Franz Wagner, not to be confused with Josef Franz Wagner, the famous Austrian bandmaster and composer of the same period. Although first performed on 21st November 1892 at the Laxemburg Castle, the waltz was played in January 1893 in the Hofburg Palace at the wedding of Archduchess Margerethe Sophie to Duke Albert of Württemberg. It was one of the popular items that he included in his regular Academy concerts at the Ronacher. Gebirgskinder was also originally written for accompaniment by a humming male voice choir and includes a fine series of original waltz themes that rise to a rousing conclusion. It is not surprising that it has remained in Austrian waltz repertory.

I've extracted the main melody of the waltz to play it in my violin but since it's difficult to find the score publicly, i decided to share it with you (in case someone wants to play it in flute, violin or instruments that can be played in treble clef) I have to mention that some parts of the waltz are in a low octave to make it easy for beginners (like me) so please enjoy it and try to play it! have fun!

Don't forget to subscribe and leave a comment, that would be helpful to improve my channel. Thank you!

PS1: The score is mine, i didn't get it from any page or sheet source, I've extracted it from the main melody so you might find some errors :)

    Classical music for dinnertime:

From the Symphony No.1, composed when Mozart was just eight years old, to the mature and well-loved ‘Haffner’, ‘Prague’ and ‘Jupiter’ symphonies, this comprehensive 11-CD set collects together Mozart’s complete body of work in this genre, performed on period instruments by the Mozart Akademie Amsterdam and conducted by Jaap ter Linden.

Mozart is recognised as one of the great composers of the Classical symphony, building upon the achievements made by his mentor Joseph Haydn to develop its form. At the time that he composed his Symphony No.1 in 1764, the symphony’s form was still closely linked to that of the French opera overture, with three short movements in a fast-slow-fast pattern. Gradually, composers like Haydn began to expand this structure to the four-movement form that we are familiar with as the Classical symphony. These fascinating developments in style and structure can be heard in Mozart’s changing approach to symphonic composition throughout his career, and the booklet notes that accompany this release trace such developments in depth.
