  • Josef Labor - Piano Quintet in E minor, Op. 3

    36:34

    - Composer: Josef Paul Labor (29 June 1842 -- 26 April 1924)
    - Performers: Oliver Triendl (piano), Cecilia Zilliacus (violin), Hiyoli Togawa (viola), Valentin Radutiu (cello), Zoran Marković (double bass)
    - Year of recording: 2013 (Live in Kempten, Germany)

Quintet for Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass in E minor, Op. 3, written in 1880.

    00:00 - I. Allegro
10:24 - II. Scherzo (Allegro vivace)
    16:01 - III. Andante
27:25 - IV. Allegro ma non troppo

Czech composer Josef Labor was born in the town of Hořovice in Bohemia, at the age of three he was left blind due to contracting smallpox. Labor knew and was on friendly terms with virtually every musician of importance in Vienna as well as many others living elsewhere, including Brahms, Richard Strauss, Bruckner, Clara Schumann, Gustav Mahler and Bruno Walter.

This piano quintet is written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass: the so called “Trout” instrumentation, taking its name from Schubert’s famous Trout Piano Quintet for the same combination [uploaded on this channel]. The impetus for it, no doubt, was Labor’s friendship with Frantisek {Franz} Simandl, a fellow Czech who was a virtuoso bassist whom most considered to be the equal of Dragonetti. Simandl was solo bassist with the Vienna Philharmonic for over 30 years and died in 1912 after a protracted illness. Labor dedicated the work to Simandl as a tribute and it is one of the few such works where the bass has an extremely important part with many solo passages and chances to lead the group.

    - The four movement work begins with a powerful and sweeping Allegro. The parts are integrated seamlessly and the melodies are compelling.
    - Next comes a playful, light-hearted Scherzo, Allegro vivace, with two highly contrasting trios. The second trio is marked “Mit humor, basso buffo” and here the bass leads the entire way.
    - For vitually the first half of the third movement, Andante, the cello alone, with the support of only the piano and very occasionally the violin, sings the gorgeous and highly romantic main theme, surely one of the longest solos in the literature. In the middle section, the bass takes over with a somber and plodding, march-like melody which is then heightened with help from the viola. The movement ends with the bass taking the lead again.
    - The finale, Allegro ma non troppo, after a short thrusting introduction, begins with a hard driving and exciting theme which breaks loose with great forward motion. The bass is given powerful short solos bursting with energy as the moods alternate between dramatic and gentle romanticism. The works ends with a hyper dramatic and masterful coda.

The Piano Quintet is dedicated: Herrn Professor Franz Simandl zugeeignet.

  • Anton Bruckner - Symphony No. 4 Romantic

    58:36

Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in E-flat major is one of the composer's most popular works. It was written in 1874 and revised several times through 1888. It was dedicated to Prince Konstantin of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst. It was premiered in 1881 by Hans Richter in Vienna with great success.
The symphony's nickname of Romantic was used by the composer himself. It does not refer to the modern conception of romantic love but rather the medieval romance as depicted in the operas Lohengrin and Siegfried of Richard Wagner.
    The symphony has four movements:

    I. Bewegt, nicht zu schnell (0:09)
    II. Andante, quasi allegretto (15:25)
III. Scherzo. Bewegt - Trio: Nicht zu schnell (29:05)
IV. Finale: Bewegt, doch nicht zu schnell (40:00)

    Conductor: Heinz Rogner
    Orchestra: Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin

  • TRISTAN & ISOLDE Wagner – La Monnaie / De Munt

    3:42:57

While a knight accompanies a princess to be married off to his master, an unspoken love kindles between them. But when their secret passion is betrayed, they seek refuge for their eternal love in death.

A hymn to the mythic power of love, Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde is a watershed in Western music. Its musical innovations, innovative use of harmony and polyphony and portrayal of extreme emotions have influenced generations of composers.

From the Symphony No.1, composed when Mozart was just eight years old, to the mature and well-loved ‘Haffner’, ‘Prague’ and ‘Jupiter’ symphonies, this comprehensive 11-CD set collects together Mozart’s complete body of work in this genre, performed on period instruments by the Mozart Akademie Amsterdam and conducted by Jaap ter Linden.

Mozart is recognised as one of the great composers of the Classical symphony, building upon the achievements made by his mentor Joseph Haydn to develop its form. At the time that he composed his Symphony No.1 in 1764, the symphony’s form was still closely linked to that of the French opera overture, with three short movements in a fast-slow-fast pattern. Gradually, composers like Haydn began to expand this structure to the four-movement form that we are familiar with as the Classical symphony. These fascinating developments in style and structure can be heard in Mozart’s changing approach to symphonic composition throughout his career, and the booklet notes that accompany this release trace such developments in depth.

“J.B. Foerster was born in this house on 30 December 1859 in order, through his music, to raise us to the heights of beauty.”

Although little known today in the wider musical world and even in his own country, Czech composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster was highly revered among his contemporaries. Foerster was active during the Czech National Revival, when the Czech art and culture was undergoing a true renaissance.

This collection comprises the composer’s complete solo piano music, which is characterised by fluid, lyrical melodic lines and unusual harmony. Each of these pieces was written as a dedication, gift or personal commission, showing the importance with which Foerester treated his family and friends. Many of the works contain a certain imagery or derive from a particular back story; one of these is the 1908 work Music for my young son – containing references to the infant Albert’s favourite folk tune – which almost seems to foretell the young boy’s tragic death, aged 16, in 1921. Among the other works in the collection is Dreaming; perhaps the composer’s most popular piano work.

The pieces are performed by renowned American pianist Patricia Goodson. Having lived in Prague since 1991, Goodson regularly wins praise all over the world for her interpretation of the Czech piano repertoire.

Best Classical Music here, and today’s masterpiece is “Unter dem Doppeladler”, or “Under the Double Eagle” in English. It was composed by Joseph Wagner in 1902. He was an Austrian composer, and in this masterpiece, he refers to the double eagle on the coat of arms of Austria-Hungary under the Emperor Franz Josef.

    About Best Classical Music:

    Hi!
I’m Andrei, a fan of classical music. One day, I asked my friends if they knew about Felix Mendelssohn, a very popular composer, but no one of them had never heard his name. Today, people listen to multiple types of music, but only some listen to masterpieces of classical music. When I say masterpiece, I don’t mean Beethoven or Mozart, but hundreds of composers that the world has forgotten about. I find sad that nobody knows about them, so I decided to use YouTube to teach and inform people about these beautiful masterpieces that are waiting for someone to listen to them. Every day, I publish a new video centered around one of them, with a little explanation, and the masterpiece itself, because I think everybody deserves to know and enjoy classical masterpieces.

  • Jorge Bolet on Josef Hofmann

    14:42

    From the Marston liner notes:
Jorge Bolet (1914–1990) was interviewed in Manhattan by Gregor Benko on 9 April 1987. Hofmann’s playing awed the Cuban-American pianist Jorge Bolet with an intensity that lasted until the day he died, although Bolet always maintained that he patterned his own ideas about performance after Rachmaninoff, rather than Hofmann: “He was a unique personality, a unique pianist. What he did was perfect … for him” he explains. We can hear Bolet’s awe more than fifty years later as he describes Hofmann’s “boundless imagination” that was brought to bear on Beethoven’s “Sonata Op. 111,” as well as Liszt’s “Don Juan Fantasy,” with a middle section that was “… so sensuous,” while other Hofmann performances were “… basically so simple, straight, without deviating one iota …” from the score.
Bolet studied with Hofmann’s assistant, David Saperton, and was among a group of students at the Curtis Institute of Music that included Nadia Reisenberg, Shura Cherkassky (who made a successful effort then to copy Hofmann’s style), and the now-forgotten Lucie Stern. Born in 1914, the same year as Bolet, Stern may have been one of Hofmann’s most talented pupils, but she died in 1938.
Of particular interest is Bolet’s evaluation of how well the recordings represent what Hofmann sounded like in person, and his description of Hofmann’s famous mannerism, bringing his flattened hand down on the keyboard to make an “explosion.” Perhaps some today will be astonished by Bolet’s final words, that there are “… no absolutes in music, including what a composer wrote.”

Josef Franz Wagner wrote Unter Dem Doppeladler (Under The Double Eagle) in 1893, referring to the double eagle in the coat of arms of Austria/Hungary.
The march became a favourite part of the repertoire of American composer and bandleader John Philip Sousa.

    6:14

    LOHENGRIN
    Romantische Oper in 3 Aufzügen
Composer & librettist: Richard Wagner (1813–1883), after mediaeval German romance
First performance: Staatskapelle Weimar, 28 August 1850

SETTING: Antwerp, on the Scheldt, 10th century

PLOT: Friedrich von Telramund accuses Elsa von Brabant of her murdering her brother Gottfried, the Duke. To Elsa’s rescue comes a wonderful knight in a boat drawn by a swan. He will defend her and marry her on the condition that she never ask his name or where he came from. The knight defeats Telramund in combat and marries Elsa, but Telramund and his wife Ortrud, a pagan sorceress, plot to destroy the knight and rule Brabant. On their wedding knight, Elsa asks the knight the fateful question; at that moment, Telramund attacks the knight and is killed. Sadly, the knight assembles the people of Brabant, and tells them who he is: Lohengrin, son of Parsifal, knight of the Holy Grail. The swan returns, and Lohengrin transforms it into its rightful form: the Duke Gottfried, enchanted by Ortrud. Elsa dies of grief as Lohengrin sails away.

    ‘In fernem Land’
Elsa has asked her husband the forbidden question: who he is, and where he came from. And now he must leave. Before he goes, the knight answers her question: he comes from the castle of Montsalvat, where angels guard the Holy Grail; he is the son of Parzival; and his name is Lohengrin.

    ===============

Tristan und Isolde is an opera, or music drama, in three acts by Richard Wagner to a German libretto by the composer, based largely on the romance by Gottfried von Strassburg. It was composed between 1857 and 1859 and premiered in Munich on 10th June, 1865.

    ===============

Jonathan Brown in his book Tristan und Isolde on Record writes:

In Act Three, McIntyre gives Tristan the best Kurwenal he could ever hope to have: an alert, watchful, caring, energetic, and mighty supporter. The way he responds to Tristan’s disorientation (“Wie kam ich her?”) with a delicate simplicity (“Hei nun, wie du kam’st?”) intensifies the tragedy of the scene immeasurably. His response to Tristan is deeply moving, most of all when he whispers his desperately pitying and pathetically joyful words when he sees Tristan is still living (“Er regt sich! Er lebt! Wie sanft er die Lippen rührt!”). Wenkoff is excellent throughout his long monologues: tough, tortured, and driven by a furious longing. Kleiber never lets up, and for a dreadful moment, it sounds as if Wenkoff won’t quite get to his Isolde (“Zu ihr! Zu ihr!”) as he searches desperately for light. It is a magisterial performance, better than those of Suthaus and Vinay in the 1950s. Ridderbusch arrives and pours out, generously, his grief-laden warmth to all those around him. Overall, this is as good a performance from Bayreuth as one could ever hope for—except only for the wish for a darker-toned Isolde.
