And By the age of 16 Thunders would take up the bass guitar and would start attending shows of the bands like the Who, and Small Faces and even rubbed elbows with the big rockstars at the time including Rod Stewart who he drank beer with backstage at the Newport Folk Festival.
By age 17 Thunders would latch onto the Detroit Music scene and His childhood friend Gail Higgins remembered “We would drive eight hours to see the MC5 or The Stooges,”It was around this time that Thunders quit bass and picked up guitar. “Whenever he was practising, I used to yell into the bedroom: ‘Give up, Johnny’,”
Given the look of the New York Dolls, Thunders never blended into the crowd - he would frequently borrow his girlfriend’s clothes. His former bandmate from the band the Heartbreakers Walker Lure rememberd “He had high-heeled boots, velvet jackets and pants, bowling gear,” “I’d see him at all the shows – mostly the British bands, as opposed to the Grateful Deads and Jefferson Airplanes – so I’d seen him around for years. Then when the Dolls started happening I said: ‘Holy! There’s that guy.’”
The story of the New York Dolls began in the early 70’s in the East Village of New York with the original lineup consisting of vocalist David Johansen , guitarist Johnny Thunders, bassist Arthur Kane, drummer Billy Murcia and pianist Sylvain Sylvain. Some of the band members were already familiar with one another prior to the formation of the Dolls as they played with each other in various bands and The band quickly got noticed with their look. They had big hair, wore silk scarfs and dressed like women. In fact sometimes they got mistaken for women.
Fashion aside, The band quickly got noticed and would find themselves playing at Wembley Stadium in London, England supporting the faces a year later, but during that trip Tragedy would strike as drummer Billy Murcia die due to an accidental drowning during a party.
Johnny Thunders friend Gail Higgins would remember: “Johnny was devastated. He was the closest with Billy and it really upset him. Johnny was very sensitive and loving, very needy and very insecure.”

hroughout most of 1977 the Heartbreakers would call London their home and record their lone album L.A.M.F. The record was hampered by mixing issues that lasted months and months and ultimately forced the demise of the band with the band’s manager remembering
“That mix can be completely laid at the door of Jerry Nolan.” “He went into this kind of control freak thing where he had to mix it. But everyone was stoned. Walking into the studio was like walking into a crack house. I should have gotten a gun and shot a couple of them dead.” he’d remember
Walter Lure of the Heartbreakers remembered the record label pressures with the album saying: “We were told we needed to release it in time for Christmas because they needed to make some money. So they just put us in a room and said if it doesn’t get released you’re not gonna have a contract. Johnny, Billy and I said yeah; Jerry said no, he was leaving, and just walked out.”
Nolan would form his own band the Idols which would make a name for themselves back home in New York. The Heartbreakers meanwhile limped along but Thunders was devastated by Nolan’s departure.
The Heartbreakers would be done by 1980 but would sporadically reform and perform shows together until 1990. And following the breakup of the band Thunders would remain in London and release a series of solo records featuring a whose who of the UK punk rock scene with his first being So Alone in 1978. He would eventually find his way back to the US and hook up with one of his idol’s MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer to form the shortlived project Gang War with kramer remembering

By 1986 Thunders seemed to turn his life around and repaired some of the fractured relationships in his life and soon enough Thunders was offering words of advice to other musicians stuck in the grip of addiction. By 1987 Thunders would get a second chance at being a father with the birth of Jamie Gazale, but something was wrong. The mother to his new child remembered

  • Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - Chinese Rocks

    3:10

Chinese Rocks or Chinese Rock is a song written in 1975 by New York City punk rock musicians Richard Hell and Dee Dee Ramone, mostly composed by the latter.

Openly discussing heroin addiction based on real-life experiences, Chinese Rock was first recorded by Hell's former band, The Heartbreakers, and later by Dee Dee's band the Ramones.

  • WALTER LURE on JOHNNY THUNDERS

    3:29

Walter Lure performed in the band called the Heartbreakers and for many years was a musical foil for Johnny as they traversed and toured America and Europe. After Johnny death, Walter continued to play - and to this day he performs and tours as lead in the band called the Waldos. Paul Tschinkel spoke with the affable Walter at his home in Bayside New York.

  • Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers All By Myself live 1984

    2:49

Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers 'All By Myself' with Walter Lure on vocals. It's one of his 'LAMF' songs and he duels guitar on it with Johnny Thunders. Filmed live at the Heartbreakers reunion, London Lyceum, March 1984. Walter Lure (guitar & vocals), Jerry Nolan (drums), Billy Rath (bass) and Johnny Thunders (guitar & vocals). A new edit for an extra on the 'Looking For Johnny' documentary by Danny Garcia - now available on DVD and on Amazon Prime.

This track wasn't featured on the original Lyceum VHS/DVD 'Dead or Alive' due to a technical problem syncing the then new Betacam SP format - only later when the tapes were digitised was a good edit possible. All By Myself lyrics are below.

    * * * For 44 years, the Heartbreakers 'L.A.M.F' has only been available as outtakes and remixes, or in the 'mud' of the original release. Now following the discovery of the the producers masters, it can be heard with clarity for the first time.

The Heartbreakers 'L.A.M.F. - the FOUND Masters' is released as a 2CD edition hardback book on Nov. 5th 2021. More details and buy-link at:-

    All By Myself lyrics:

I don’t want to talk too much
I just want to get to you
I don’t want to see you there
I just want to get you there
All by myself, all by myself
All by myself, not everybody else

I don’t need no wedding hall
    I just want your Rollerball
Forget your friends and what they do
Got to get inside of you
All by myself, all by myself
All by myself, not everybody else

    I don’t need society
To open up my fly for me
    I don’t need no audience
To shoot you with my cumming sense
All by myself, all by myself
All by myself, not everybody else

    I don’t think you understand
What’s that dripping in your hand?
All the things you thought you’d do
    You finally met your Waterloo
All by myself, all by myself
All by myself, not everybody else

All by myself, all by myself
All by myself, not everybody else

Johnny Thunders' cover of the song As Tears Go By which was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Clips used in the video are from the movie Mona et Moi and from the documentary fil Johnny Thunders Born to Lose.

It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play.
    Smiling faces I can see,
    but not for me.

I sit and watch as tears go by

    My riches can't buy (everything?)
I want to hear the childeren sing
Doing things I used to do
they made me think of you.

I sit and watch as tears go by.

  • Johnny Thunders Joey live acoustic on TV

    4:16

Johnny Thunders playing Bob Dylan's 'Joey', together with Oddballs sax player Jamie Heath, during an acoustic tour when he played Dublin's New Inn. Much better quality than a version seen elsewhere. Broadcast on 26th April 1990, just a year before Johnny died the following April 23rd. Filmed in Ireland for the Nighthawks programme.

Johnny had previously shown his respect for Bob Dylan by covering 'Like a Rolling Stone', also on the Hurt Me album. and may have been drawn to this song as it's about an Italian-American mobster Joey Gallo, who despite being convicted of extortion and acccused of murder was viewed sympathetically by many who viewed him as an Italian-American folk hero. After Dylan was criticised for the lyrics for glorifying Gallo, he said that his co-writer Jaques Levy had actually written the lyrics.

Johnny's version abbreviates the lyrics of Dylan's much longer version originally released on his 'Desire' album.

Johnny plays Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' here:

The classic Johnny & Patti duet single 'CRAWFISH', originally released in 1985, is being reissued as a limited edition 7 in original picture sleeve, plus 12 versions on download. An Elvis cover, it features Heartbreakers Jerry Nolan & Billy Rath along with Only One guitarist John Perry. Acclaimed by NME as 'Single of Week', it became an 80's indie chart hit.

New Yorkers Johnny & Patti, exiled in London, excelled the 'King Creole' Elvis version of this swampy, evocative paean to the Louisiana freshwater crustacean.* Originally recorded on a London Records budget at the legendary Olympic Studios and mixed at Martin Rushent's Genetic Studios, it became a much-revered classic, still getting radio play in 2006.
