Tony Hithe about Johnny Guitar Watsons style and death on stage

    20:31

Rhythm guitarist Tony Hithe was the last 1,5 years member of the Watson Band and close to Johnny and Michael King, the musical director of the Watson Band. On Jan. 1, 1988, Tony gives his frankly comments on the musical background, style and guitar technics of Johnny Guitar Watson, not as a fan but as a lead and rhythm guitarist.
Tony was on stage when John suddenly stopped after singing stronger than a locomotive and then fell on the floor of the venue in Japan. A few hours later John was offically declared dead. A massive heart attack, that shocked the whole Band, and later his many fans.

This interview was recorded in aa small Dutch village, Woensdrecht (7 km from my house), after a performance, including a magnificent cover of A Real Mother For Ya. By giving e-mail addresses he started the research for my biography, The Gangster of Love - Johnny Guitar Watson: Performer, Preacher, Pimp.

    Johnny Guitar Watson - Giant

    34:14

The disco period in Johnny Guitar Watson's catalog was spotty at best. You gotta hand it to Watson; during this period he maintained a sense of humor with tongue firmly in cheek. The Gangster of Love refused to become a dinosaur R&B oldies artist, referred to only in Whatever Happened To... articles. That doesn't mean, however, that this material is recommended. Giant includes a few fun moments in the form of the reworked but still blues-drenched Gangster of Love and You Can Stay But the Noise Must Go

Johnny Guitar Watson - Blues Masters The Very Best Of JGW

    49:20

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Johnny Guitar Watson - Blues Masters: The Very Best Of J.G.W.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Johnny Guitar Watson was a blues/R&B/funk pioneer, both in sound and music, and this 18-track collection zeroes in on his bluesiest and earliest sides. Watson a true multi-talent and this set shows it off to great advantage while still staying firmly in the blues mode throughout; he was a blazing boogie woogie pianist (check him out on the earlier version with Chuck Higgins of Motorhead Baby), a futuristic guitarist who influenced numerous players from Bo Diddley and Ike Turner to the later Jimi Hendrix in the instrument-as-noisemaker department (1954's Space Guitar) and a soulful singer who was both uptown and as gutbucket as you could possibly ask for (1962's That's the Chance You've Got to Take and 1955's Three Hours Past Midnight which also sports one mean and spare guitar solo), an artist who understood low down blues and be-bop jazz and came up with his own melding of it. Watson is the lost genius of the blues and this set is a long overdue tribute to a true pioneer visionary.

Best old blues: Johnny Guitar Watson. Every Day I Have The Blues, LA, 1971

    13:04

The oldest live recording of Watson, hard to find bootleg, presented here on YouTube for he first time. Part of an unidentified recording of a blues evening in venue the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, in 1971. Johnny Guitar Watson presents a cover of BB King, Every Day I Have The Blues (downloaded around fifteen years ago with KaZaa, probably taken from a local radio broadcast).
It's a pity video is missing. Amateur camera's were not available those days. So, I present on photo of Watson during the concert (made by the then 16 years old Dave Alvin), and the front and back cover of my biography.

Johnny Guitar Watson - Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty

    33:47

Tripped-out funk from Johnny – very much in his I Got To Ta Ta Ya Baby mode, with the guitar skipping around keyboards in a mellow Bay Area kind of way!
Johnny's gone way way past his bluesy roots here – into a sublime blend of soul and funk that's all crafted with just the right amount of lightly spacey touches. The Watson vocals are totally on the money throughout – sliding into the mix in that seductive way that often has Johnny singing beautifully alongside his guitar.
Having played with the likes of Frank Zappa, Little
Richard, Johnny Otis, Sam Cooke & George Duke, Johnny Guitar Watson certainly can be described as a Soul/Funk Legend. Johnny made his guitar sound ike no other on earth, Jimi Hendrix clearly took note “Those things Jimi was doing, I started that shit” Mr Watson once said. And who are we to argue!!
