  • Rick McRae, George Straits guitarist, Interviewed for the Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording

The Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording interviewed Rick McRae to recognize musicians who work, often behind the scenes, in performance and recording.

Rick McRae is best known as the long time guitarist for George Strait. Rick also plays with his trio the Riff Ryders and plays solo gigs. This is Rick's video demo performing with a loper.

Rick was born in San Antonio, Texas. After playing with the Jimmy Heap Band and other groups in the 1970's, Rick joined the George Strait band in the early 1980's and never looked back.

    First musical influence
....played rhythm guitar to fiddle tunes.

    Early influences
....Bob Wills....Buck Owens....Merle Haggard. ....All the musicians on the country shows on TV and the great road bands fronted by Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills and Hank Thompson.

    Country and swing heroes
....Johnny Gimble, Roy Clark, Roy Nichols, Phil Baugh, Chet Atkins, Leon McAulif, Leon Rhodes..etc.

    Telecaster Heroes
....Brent Mason, Redd Volkaert, Vince Gill ,and Jimmy Bryant among others.

Discovered jazz guitar in 1968 by hearing Color him Funky by Howard Roberts and became hooked on Jazz guitar to this day.

    Jazz guitar heroes
.....Howard Roberts, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Jimmy Wyble, Eldon Shamblin and others too numerous to mention.

    Vocal heroes
...George Strait, Tommy Duncan, Merle Haggard, Tony Bennet, Sarah Vaungh, Ella Fitzgerald among many others.

I guess I am a total guitar nut. I love all the different aspects and sounds that they make. Guess that is why I have so many guitars. I like to play my electric classical guitar a lot too. I have recently started to learn more bluegrass flat-picking too. That will keep a man busy

    Favorite gig
....touring once a year with George Strait and his Ace in the Hole Band.

We had a blast hanging with the extraordinary Jana Jae! Her sweet demeanor brightened our day and her amazing fiddle playing was an unexpected delight.

Jana has built a solid solo career, drawing upon her diverse musical background. Her one-of-a-kind style blends country fiddling, western swing, bluegrass, pop, and the classics, producing thrilling performances and critical acclaim. Jana got her big break at a Buck Owens concert in Redding, California when she was invited to take the stage and play “Orange Blossom Special.” Buck was one of the first “big names” to recognize her talents and offered her a job as the first female member of his “Buckaroos” band. She later became part of the regular team of performers on the “Hee Haw” show and has appeared with such country music greats as Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Ray Stevens, The Oakridge Boys, Mel Tillis, Ricky Skaggs and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Listen in and learn about this exceptional and delightful musician who will charm you as she charmed us!

Johnny Gimble was one of my favorite fiddlers, and was certainly influential in my development as a fiddler. Johnny passed away a couple of days ago, and I want to honor him with a tune.

The tune I'm playing here is one that Johnny Gimble wrote called the Barefoot Fiddler.

  • Roy Clark Sings Honeymoon Feelin

Super-talented Roy Clark (1933-2018) could play literally any stringed instrument--a fantastic guitarist, banjo & fiddle player. He was the National Banjo Champion in 1947 & 1948, Entertainer of the Year 3 times, Instrumentalist of the Year 3 times (Academy of Country Music & CMA), a member of the Grand Ole Opry, host of the long-running 'Hee Haw', & 1982's Grammy winner for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
Here is his 1974 hit, Honeymoon Feelin', which reached #4 on the charts. Since MusicBank58 and her hubby logged in 33 years on the road to forever, together last month, this catchy song has a special meaning for me. Rest In Peace, Roy!
As always, I don't own the music or the images, and make no profit--Fair Use.

  • PATSY MONTANA - I Want To Be A Cowboys Sweetheart

I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart is a country and Western song written and first recorded in 1935 by Ruby Blevins, who performed as Patsy Montana. It was the first country song by a female artist to sell more than one million copies.

Montana wrote the song in 1934 when she was feeling lonely and missing her boyfriend; it was recorded a year later when producer Art Satherly, of ARC Records, needed one more song at a Prairie Ramblers recording session. Montana was the group's soloist at the time. Her song is based on Stuart Hamblen's western song Texas Plains: he is therefore credited as a cowriter. Patsy Montana embellished the simpler musical pattern of the original, especially with her yodeling. Patsy also used a lot of the original words: the song is somewhat of a feminine answer to its precursor.
