Tnn's `American Music Shop' Brings Top Performers Together
July 03, 1993|By Wayne Bledsoe, Scripps-Howard News Service.

NASHVILLE — On a network filled with music, The American Music Shop stands out.

Nearly every show of the Nashville Network's American Music Shop (9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Tuesdays, TNN) is an event: Country diva Emmylou Harris performs with new star Trisha Yearwood; legendary singer-songwriter John Prine trades songs with upcoming singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding; young country star Dwight Yoakam picks with bluegrass great Ralph Stanley; Ireland's foremost band, the Chieftains, performs with Ricky Skaggs and Chet Atkins.

It's a show where individual music artists perform together, often for the first time, backed up by some of the best session players in music.

On one recent show, the host was Nanci Griffith, and it includes some of Griffith's favorite songwriters-Janis Ian, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Frank Christiansen.

Backstage, at a television studio in Opryland, there is a happy buzz. The artists joke, eat and prepare for their parts on the show, while the artists' management and TNN employees keep things moving. On the soundstage, the house band runs through the night's numbers.

American Music Shop premiered in March 1990. The show's creator and executive producer, Brian O'Neill, says the idea was to make each week's musical host a person known to most country music fans, then slip in lesser known talented artists-most often people whom the host liked. That way, he says, both the audience and the artists win.

The show, TNN's fourth most popular program, seems to be a particular favorite among other musicians.

It doesn't hurt that the members of the house band have followings in their own right.

Led by master violinist, guitarist, mandolinist Mark O'Connor, the band includes Jerry Douglas, a man who has nearly reinvented the dobro; guitarist Brent Mason; bassist Glen Worf; drummer Harry Stinson; and keyboardists John Jarvis and Matt Rollings.

In developing the show, I sold the network on getting the very best possible house band that we could get, O'Neill says.

And that was going to be part of the draw for the show-at least from the artist's perspective.

O'Connor, probably the most popular session musician in Nashville at the time, was thrilled with the prospect.

He says the show offered the first chance for television audiences to get a look at how Nashville's studio musicians work.

  • PATSY MONTANA - I Want To Be A Cowboys Sweetheart

    2:44

I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart is a country and Western song written and first recorded in 1935 by Ruby Blevins, who performed as Patsy Montana. It was the first country song by a female artist to sell more than one million copies.

Montana wrote the song in 1934 when she was feeling lonely and missing her boyfriend; it was recorded a year later when producer Art Satherly, of ARC Records, needed one more song at a Prairie Ramblers recording session. Montana was the group's soloist at the time. Her song is based on Stuart Hamblen's western song Texas Plains: he is therefore credited as a cowriter. Patsy Montana embellished the simpler musical pattern of the original, especially with her yodeling. Patsy also used a lot of the original words: the song is somewhat of a feminine answer to its precursor.

    COVID-19 Sessions Scene 17
Back 40 years ago I was playing some tunes with Ray Lapointe, a Moncton NB country and bluegrass musician. I had just started to pick up the fiddle so he game me a double LP of Benny Martin. When this cut came on, it was like how is that even possible to play like that. I still think that today. As I learned a lick here an there over the years I thought one day I'd like to record that tune and get it as close to these two fiddlers as possible. Well, 40 years later and time on my hands because of the Covid-19, I decided to give it a try on video.
I wrote out all the notes then I attempted to play them. Many more years of practice and I still wouldn't sound like these two Masters! Thanks for listening and watching my videos.

I'd like to thank Hugh Moore for playing back up banjo on this cut. He played on Benny Martin's last 2 CD recordings, The Big Tiger Rides Again- Part 1 and 2. Check out Hugh's videos on YouTube. I helped out on few songs and thus far we've only met via the internet. Cheers everyone!

  • Golden Slippers; a Western Swing Fiddle lesson with some Johnny Gimble licks.

    19:12

Golden Slippers is a simple and unassuming song. In this fiddle lesson, I play in the style Bob Wills would have used. I show how to add swing and variation to the basic melody, breaking up crotchets and longer notes into swung quavers, adding the Georgia Shuffle, open string drones, and some double stops to mark the chord changes.

I then try out various licks for a solo, including some typical Johnny
Gimble fiddle licks. I look briefly at the theory of chord substitution, with added 6ths and 9ths, and some diminished and augmented substitutions.

Below are details of further fiddle resources from Chris Haigh
