  • THE CROSSING - Friends of Johnny Clegg

    6:42

    - In 2018 a group of well-known musicians came together to celebrate the life and work of Johnny Clegg and recorded a special version of his song - THE CROSSING.
All proceeds will go to the ‘Friends of Johnny Clegg Fund’ for primary education. The fund is all about changing lives of young learners all across South Africa, through literacy programmes and using technology in education to pursue outcomes-based interventions. The Fund is managed by The Click Foundation who will distribute funds to their various centers across South Africa.

Visit the FriendsOfJohnnyClegg website for more information on the singers, or how to contribute to the Fund.

    THE CROSSING - JOHNNY CLEGG

Through all the days that eat away
At every breath that I take
Through all the nights I've lain alone
    In someone else's dream, awake

All the words in truth we have spoken
That the wind has blown away
It's only you that remains with me
Clear as the light of day

O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)

A punch drunk man in a downtown bar
Takes a beating without making a sound
Through swollen eyes he sways and smiles
'Cause no one can put him down

Inside of him a boy looks up to his father
For a sign or an approving eye
Oh, it's funny how those once so close and now gone
Can still so affect our lives

O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)

Take me now, don't let go
Hold me close, I'm coming home

O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)

-- A jeśli pewnego dnia będę musiał odejść? -- spytał Krzyś, ściskając Misiową łapkę. -- Co wtedy?
-- Nic wielkiego. -- zapewnił go Puchatek. -- Posiedzę tu sobie i na Ciebie poczekam. Kiedy się kogoś kocha, to ten drugi ktoś nigdy nie znika.

Hey wena nawe (Hey you and you as well)
Siyofika nini la' siyakhona (When will we arrive at our destination.

Asimbonanga, also known as Asimbonanga Mandela), is an anti-apartheid song by the South African racially integrated band Savuka, from their 1987 album Third World Child. It alluded to Nelson Mandela, imprisoned on Robben Island at the time of song's release, and other anti-apartheid activists. It was well received, becoming popular within the movement against apartheid, and was covered by several artists including Joan Baez and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

  • Tribute JOHNNY & JESSE CLEGG Ive Been Looking LYRICS Zulu SOUTH AFRICAN ICON World Leader MANDELA

    4:26

There were no lyrics available anywhere for this amazing song, created and performed here by the late Johnny Clegg and his son Jesse (sorry for the typo in opening credit :(

I so wanted to find the lyrics, so I spent the days following Johnny's death on July 16, 2019, listening and transcribing this wonderful song - word by word.

Then for the first time, I attempted to get the lyrics on the video which had already been uploaded from another youtuber.

As Johnny I am sure would most appreciate, it took a team from all these many places to get this video here and now with lyrics. Hope you and whoever matters to you enjoy this song.

BON VOYAGE AND THANK YOU JOHNNY

  • Johnny Clegg - Great Heart

    5:03

In honor of Johnny Clegg, who lost his battle with cancer yesterday, my video of his performance of Great Heart from his Final Journey Tour, his last appearance in New York City at BB King in October 2017.

This was such a significant night for me. It was my first time out after open heart surgery. It was a struggle to get there and back, but no way was I going to miss Johnny's farewell to NYC. I went to see him every time he visited New York, but this time was going to be the last time, even though he spoke of beating pancreatic cancer.

One of the highlights of his NYC shows was meeting other fans. Everyone asked everyone else how they had come to know him -- as significant a player as he was on the world music scene, he was not that well known in the U.S. The South Africans we met, obviously they knew him from home, but everyone else had a different story to tell.

I first heard him on WLIR, the pioneering alt-rock radio station with the weak signal coming out of Long Island. They had picked up Scatterlings of Africa after it was featured in Rain Man and its soundtrack album. The song blew me away -- I had to hear more.

In 1987-88, you didn't look it up on the internet, no Spotify or YouTube. To hear more, you had to go out and buy the album. It was the Savuka version of Scatterlings from the recently released Third World Child. On vinyl.

Man, I wore out Side 1 of that record -- Are You Ready, Asimbonanga, Giyana, Scatterlings, Great Heart. It was one of my top go-to discs to impress people when they came over. Still and always my top five Johnny Clegg songs. Listening to them a lot today.

Thanks for the great music, Johnny. Thanks for the groundbreaking and influential music -- here in the states, Paul Simon's Graceland remains an enduring classic, and as much as I love it, it could not have possibly existed without you paving the way for him.

And thanks for the part you played in changing South Africa -- I visited last year on my way to Botswana, and thought of you while I was in Jo'burg, hoping you were winning your battle. You will always live on through your music -- music that helped end injustice, helped bridge gaps and bring people together, and made people listen and dance with delight.

The Mariposa Folk Festival was founded in 1961 in Orillia, Ontario. It was held in Orillia for three years before being banned because of disturbances by festival-goers.

After being held in various places in Ontario for a few decades, it returned to Orillia in 2000. Ruth Jones, her husband Dr. Crawford Jones, brother David Major and Pete McGarvey organized the first Mariposa Folk Festival in August 1961. The inaugural event, covered by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, featured all Canadian performers.

The first festival held in the Toronto area, in 1964, was at Maple Leaf Stadium. The subsequent three festivals were held at Innis Lake in Caledon northwest of the city.

    Lyrics:

Shadow men from the outlands come to town
    Looking for Bafazane
They want to gun him down -- oh no
They say he thunders too loud and his people are proud
They'll never give in while he's still around
And it's the sky above that he loves

    Chorus:
They've got bullets for Bafazane -- They want to gun him down
They've got bullets for Bafazane -- Now they're searching the town
They've got bullets for Bafazane -- And the word's got around
    They've got bullets for Bafazane

Eyes wide open in the backroom,
    Finger on the trigger
Listening for any sound that will
    Betray the silent deadly figure
He's got iron in his soul,
He's got a smile in his eyes
He makes dancing shoes from old car tyres
And it's the sky up above that he loves

    Chorus

It's the sky up above that he loves
'Cause for him he's alive and that's enough

    Chorus
