The Checker label was founded by brothers Leonard and Philip Chess in 1952, along with the famous Chess label that would prove a driving force in the rise of the blues in the Fifties. One of the reasons for opening another label was to maximise the chance of radio airplay, so Checkers, a board game similar to chess, was the logical choice of name. With the likes of Elmore James, Jimmy Witherspoon and Bo Diddley there’s a treasure trove of music to be found on this compilation. Checkers is a board game…you’ll be anything but!

Parrot 779 - John Brim - Tough Times

    3:06

John Brim made great records for J.O.B, Parrot, Blue Lake and Chess. 'Tough Times', thought by some to be a steal of 'I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man', was actually recorded a month earlier in December 1953. Despite some obvious similarities the two are however quite different. 'Tough Times', on which Brim's wife Grace plays drums, is one of my all-time favorite blues records and is rarely far from my turntable.

Bruce Beacom - Van Halen cover of John Brim song Ice Cream Man. Molly Malones - Sat 09/24/11

    2:52

John Brim originally wrote and recorded Ice Cream Man in 1953 but the song wasn't released until 1969 on Chess records. Van Halen later covered the song on the record Van Halen 1 released in 1977. Ice Cream Man is hands down one of the best blues songs ever penned. In respect to John Brim and Van Halen, we hope you enjoy our cover of a cover. Performed and recorded live at Molly Malones in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday 09/24/11 with Bruce Beacom on guitar and vocals, Carlos Palazio on drums and Kevin Boyd on bass. Cheers!
