    More Joey Negro:

Dave Lee is the last man standing. There are very few DJs and producers left from the early years of British house, but Lee continues to thrive, still DJing, remixing and making dance music. Under a dazzling variety of aliases – Sessomatto, Akabu, The Sunburst Band, Hed Boys, Jakatta and most famously Joey Negro – he’s been producing music since 1988, clocking up hundreds of classic remixes along the way, as well as several chart hits.

Lee’s love of disco has always infused his music, originally in his use of samples and nowadays in the form of carefully curated compilations, and his latest album, ‘Produced With Love’, is no exception, drawing on the entire history of the genre and bringing it completely up to date.

  • Joey Negro - Must Be The Music

    ZR SHOP -

Originally released in 1999 and featuring Taka Boom (sister of Chaka Khan) on vocals, ‘Must Be The Music’ was a hit in every sense of the word. Released by the Subliminal label, it was a one of the rare records to make the transition from club mainstay to genuine pop hit, eventually breaking into the top 10 of the UK singles chart.

Now completely reworked by Joey Negro himself, the record has been totally transformed and given a new lease of life as a shimmering disco anthem in the vein of disco demigods Chic and Change.

“The only thing that remains from the original record is the chorus backing vocals. All the drums, music and verse vocals from Dianne Charlamagne are new. The original sounds a little dated to me now: it’s too fast and has that filtered sound that worked in the 90s and still seems to find favour in some quarters, but for me is tired.

“Because it was a hit I often get asked to play it when I DJ, so I thought it would be cool to do a radically different remake my own song, produce a new version I could play in my sets alongside original disco and the new music I’m making now.” Joey Negro

This new version of ‘Must Be The Music’ is taken from the forthcoming Joey Negro album Produced With Love. Only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released – and the first for more than 20 years – the overwhelming majority of music included was newly recorded: a real rarity when it comes to modern disco and indicative of the level of care and attention that has been poured into the project.

    Available from -

What can you say about Fonce and Larry Mizell? Their work with jazz artists such as Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey and Johnny Hammond is rightly regarded as the best of the best. A combination of distinctive chord progressions, melancholic orchestration, often topped off with their own raw harmonies, gave their productions a unique wistful quality. LTD (Love, Tenderness and Devotion) is where we first heard Jeffrey Osbourne’s voice and the Mizells were drafted in to produce their third album. It’s not a brilliant LP but did contain several classics including their breakthrough single “Love Ballad” and was the blueprint for what came after. LTTW is by no means a cheerful song with its “we’re heading to the end of humanity, heaven help us” lyric but when set to a typical Mizell keys refrain and particularly gorgeous strings the end result is more uplifting than depressing. Strange there’s only 1 verse. I like the originals bumpy drum pattern and initially mixed it using that beat, however, the dance floor reaction wasn’t so great. I thought I might as well at least try going back and seeing if a straighter disco soul type drum groove would suit it, something that would only be possible if you had the multi. I felt it did and made my remix a little more drastic as well as playable. “Love To The World” was also given the 4/4 treatment when it was covered by Michael Watford in the early 90s.

  • 90s House & Garage compiled by Joey Negro

Double CD Available now from -

    iTunes Pre Order -

Founded way back in 91, Z Records have since amassed a lauded and plentiful collection of singles, albums and compilations. Run by Dave Lee aka Joey Negro, the label has enjoyed success through his unique ability to foster the principles of underground dance music whilst also remaining mindful of commercial appeal.

Through various compilations, Mr Lee has consistently delved deep into the heart of a specific genre or era and selecting a
lesser-known series of tracks that give a real insight into the spirit and energy that made that point in time special. Whether it's been GoGo, Brit Funk, Boogie, Italo house or straight up Disco, he has mined deep into his extensive bank of influences and also enlisted the help of some of his most clued-up comrades in offering some unforgettable collections of classics.

Next up - he pulls together a collection of his favourite moments across a definitive decade for House and Garage: the 90’s.
Inclusive of material from Kerri Chandler, Robert Owens and MAW as well as remixes from Mood II Swing and Ron Trent - the compilation is packed with sultry vocal lines and the sort of slick, irresistible grooves that defined the era.

Sticking with the ethos of his series, Joey Negro has dug out an olio of music that may have until now ‘slipped under the garage doors’ meaning a lot of the material on this compilation is being digitised for the very first time.

In searching deeper and wider than the average compilation, the package provides a thorough insight into why this was such a fertile period for production and gives a nod to the sort of drum patterns, sampling techniques and vocal lines that have inspired the likes of Bicep, Brawther and Huxley amongst many more.

Joey Negro Remixed With Love has been on constant rotation at home and at my gigs. Every track is a killer. Joey Negro is a true master at work -- Ashley Beedle

Remixed With Love is Joey Negro's dream project and most definitely a labour of love. The album features 18 tracks all remixed from original session tapes some more than 30 years old which was A headache to source as Joey puts it.

Often you end up speaking to relatives of the person who actually made the record and unfortunately I heard the line all too often, I might have a copy of the vinyl somewhere but I definitely don't know where the master tapes are.

As a fanatical music collector and enthusiast Joey found himself meeting up with ex-label reps and relatives of the artists leaving no stone unturned - searching through boxes and in lofts. One multitrack was even under the producer's bed. With such dedication comes results and the result is impressive.

Rather than remixes in their modern definition this is a body of remixes in a re-edit style with the tracks given a new dimension to make them more relevant and playable for today's dancefloors.

In many cases the drums have been changed, percussion added and sometimes more keyboard parts but he's not totally ditched the original structure of the music. This project is about utilising some of those fantastic original parts in a different way that takes advantage of many of the songs classic status subtly teasing in familiar elements and dubbing them out.
