  • Joe Morello on Conan OBrien - Take Five

    4:17

Great jazz drummer Joe Morello plays Take Five by Paul Desmond on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1995.

For years I only showed this to drum students, and am happy to be able to share it now. I often showed this to demonstrate that all drummers, no matter how great, will drop their stick at an inconvenient time. You just keep going! We all know what a musical drummer Joe was, but it has been especially refreshing to hear from students of his over the years, including Dan Gotlieb, of what a great teacher and inspiration he was as well.

Based on some comments, I believe the rest of the band is: Ralph LaLama on tenor sax, Gary Mazzurapi on bass, and Greg Kogan on piano.

This is one of the most iconic jazz drum beats in history. Joe Morello put it all in there: killer groove, a great drum beat, and a fantastic solo in the middle. Oh, AND THE WHOLE SONG IS IN 5/4! It's rare for a jazz song to hit the Billboard charts like this one did...even rarer for a jazz song in an odd time signature with a drum solo. Miracles can happen!!!

This is definitely a drum beat that every drummer should be aware of.

  • Asking Joe Morello: Have You Lost Your Chops?

    5:32

The story behind this excerpt is posted here:

In short, by 1978, from a few sources, I was under the impression Joe Morello had stopped playing, had lost his chops, and was very much a recluse.

When I had the chance to interview him on March 7, 1978 I asked him. This excerpt is Joe's reply.

  • Killer Joe for Snare Drum

    3:53

Here is Killer Joe from my snare drum book Broad Strokes. It is written in the style of, and dedicated to my teacher, Joe Morello.
The solo contains several of Joe's trademark techniques including the use of the Moeller technique, finger control and some tricky independence. The content is built upon several Dave Brubeck tunes including Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five as well as several sticking exercises and etudes we used to play together.

The snare I am using is a Gretsch Centennial 7 wood drum with a calf head and regular curly snares.

(I get pretty emotional sometimes while playing my drums and I sure do love this song. I hope you will overlook the stupid drummer faces.)

The song 'Take 5' from Dave Brubeck featuring the incredible Joe Morello on drums.

Joe's incredible stick work and inventive rhythmic concepts set the bar of jazz drumming up to new heights and through sharing his brilliant approach to stick technique with all of us, he has grown a legion of of adoring pupils!

Not even his physical passing last March 12th will dim his glorious Light. His impact on drummers all over the world has been so outstanding and will carry on for many generations!

I was trying to find the right way to show Zildjian Cymbals some love for having been such a legendary part this amazingly diverse musicscape and it just makes the best sense to honor Mr Morello in the best way I know how.while doing it.

Thank you, my teacher, Master Joe Morello,

    The Dave Brubeck Quartet
    Dave Brubeck, piano
    Paul Desmond, alto sax
    Joe Morello, drums
    Eugene Wright, bass

Take Five written in 5/4, was a time signature so new to jazz that The Dave Brubeck Quartet abandoned it on the first of three recording sessions.

It's fascinating to hear on this track that the iconic drum beat wasn't set yet and Joe Morello was playing a very syncopated Latin beat. Even alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, had not yet settled on a consistent melody.  Brubeck was playing the famous piano vamp in order to hold the piece together along with the glue provided by Gene Wright on bass.

It was supposed to simply be a tune that would feature the drums.  This version from Time OutTakes explodes with one hell of a drum solo, longer than the original hit single, proving why Joe was considered one of the very best drummers in jazz.
