  • Jo Jones, a magician on drums, in Caravan

    4:11

Jo Jones is one of the greatest drummer in the history of Jazz. Most inventive, he frequently improvises the most unpredictable and bold breaks with an impressive rythmic energy. This example of his drum solo shows his amazing and unique variety.

The extraordinary solo of Jo Jones, a magician on drums, ends in a blaze of spectacular glory the film l'Aventure du Jazz. This film will be showed again in France in 2012 by its director Louis Panassié to commemorate the centenary of Hugues Panassié's birth in 1912 and also the foundation of the Hot Club de France 80 years ago with the collaboration of Charles Delaunay and Pierre Nourry.

A showing is already expected in December 2012 in Paris by the current Hot Club president François Desbrosses. More showings are being organized in several french towns.

Soon you will see l'Aventure du Jazz in Lattes (near Montpellier ) on Friday, March 9 in the Jacques Coeur theater.

Bonjour: you will find more information about this film on my website
and also others subjects i have tackled in my long and adventurous life which started in 1956 with the first African tour on a Harley Davidson.

As you may understand, I have lived and filmed rare and most unforgettable historical moments.

Please contact me by mail cinevideolouis.panassie@gmail.com
    So long.

    Welcome to MUSIC CIRCLE

Jonathan David Samuel Jones (October 7, 1911 – September 3, 1985) was an American jazz drummer. A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948. He was sometimes known as Papa Jo Jones to distinguish him from younger drummer Philly Joe Jones.

He is generally held to be the most important drummer of his time, mainly because he caused the transition, or at the very least was instrumental in it, when the art of drumming moved from ‘Ragtime’ music to what we now know as jazz – and drumming changed. He became known as ‘Papa’ Jo Jones to avoid confusion with ‘Philly’ Joe Jones who was a dozen years younger but eventually working at the same time.

Ragtime was a genre of drumming which appeared at the turn of the 20th century, and it was closely associated with a style of entertainment called ‘Vaudeville’. Vaudeville music was often played by one guy with drumsticks on a bass drum and a snare drum and this was called ‘double drumming’. There was of course a place for one guy playing the bass drum and another playing the snare but, the advent of the bass pedal in 1909 and the influence of the great depression would put paid to all of that. Just one guy now took care of all the associated percussion sounds (tuned or otherwise) in the band which in those days was frequently more grandly called an Orchestra .

Jo Jones wasn’t just a drummer, he could turn his hand to piano, trumpet and saxophone. By the time he joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1934, the centre of jazz had moved from New Orleans to Chicago, and mainly due to the influence of Jo Jones, the whole style of playing the music had changed. He shifted the drummer’s role from that of a strict-tempo timekeeper to that of an interactive member of an improvising group.

Philly Joe Jones - Drums Around the World

DRUMS AROUND THE WORLD is a spirited, energetic album. The high point is probably The Tribal Message, a piece Philly Joe Jones performs by himself. On this track, Jones develops his drum solo gradually, beginning first with spare rhythmic gestures. From here, he slowly builds in intensity, careful not to climax too quickly. The peak of the solo is marked by earsplitting cymbal crashes and grand, timpani-like tom-tom rolls.

The next track, Cherokee continues along the same vein. Here Jones's ferocious playing begins with a kind of jungle groove. This eventually gives way to the notoriously quick tempo of Ray Noble's composition. Blisteringly fast solos are offered here by trombonist Curtis Fuller, flutist Herbie Mann, trumpeter Lee Morgan, and others. Finally, legendary producer Orrin Keepnews adds a previously unheard rendition of the Benny Golson-penned Stablemates on this reissue. Apparently, this cut was lost or forgotten about for decades, and its inclusion satisfyingly completes this animated set of tunes.

Recorded at Reeves Sound Studio, New York, New York in May 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1147). Includes original liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.

Personnel: Philly Joe Jones (drums); Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Benny Golson (tenor saxophone); Sahib Shihab (baritone saxophone); Lee Morgan, Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Herbie Mann (flute, piccolo); Wynton Kelly (piano); Sam Jones, Jimmy Garrison (acoustic bass).

    LYRICS:

    Record set
    Record straight
    Cut ‘em off

    Join the Party
    Let your body
    Rock

    Everybody
    Feeling nasty
    Talk

    Mind’s racing
    Medication
    Block

    Catastrophizing
    Grip sliding
    Stop

    Electrifying
    Feel your body
    Shock

    Her body's riding
    Smooth rhythm
    Lock

    Her body's shining
    Rough diamond
    Rock

    Think about it
    Think about it
    Just for a minute

    Careful now
    Careful darling
    Don’t overthink it

    Ah man
    God damn
    Now you’re swimming in it

    Going under
    Going under
    Asphyxiating

    Skin’s crawling

    Knocking on my door
    To ask me over
Every phone call is big brother
    Checking in
    Veil thin

    Every eye
    Every sly grin
    Is paranoia
    If shadows are creeping
    Then we ain't sleeping

    Skin’s crawling
    Mind’s stalling
    Toxic elevation

    She's calling
    Floor’s falling
    Heavy respiration

    Fear’s dawning
    Every morning
    No I can't escape it

    Fear’s dawning
    Every morning
    No I can’t escape it

    Catastrophizing
    Grip sliding

Every phone call is big brother
    Checking in
    Veil thin

    Every eye
    Every sly grin
    Is paranoid
    If shadows are creeping
    And we ain't sleeping

from album Jo Jones and Milt Hinton- Percussion and Bass
