    ---Biography---
Manning was a founding member of bands Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, The Moog Cookbook, and TV Eyes. He has also spent several years as an integral member of Beck's backing band, and made contributions to several recordings by the band Air. He is known for his distinctive style of playing various analog and digital synthesizers. Electronica, power pop, psychedelia and jazz are his primary genres although he also does session work with a number of artists as well as commercial and soundtrack music. As well as providing session work, he used to work frequently with producer Jerry Finn, through whom he was credited as keyboardist on a number of recordings with pop-punk band Blink-182. In early 2006, Manning released his first solo album in Japan only: Solid State Warrior. It was subsequently issued in the U.S. under a different title, The Land of Pure Imagination, along with an altered song content. Three tracks from Solid (What You Don't Know About the Girl, Sleep Children, and Till We Meet Again) were switched-out for three newer tracks (Pray for the Many, In the Name of Romance, and Appleby).

When Roger Joseph Manning (he added the Joseph to avoid confusion with another musician named Roger Manning) was ready to issue his debut solo album, Solid State Warrior, in 2005, rather than use the traditional retail model, he opted for digital distribution via a novel but short-lived service called Weedshare that attempted to harness peer-to-peer tastemaking capabilities. Neither the service nor the album gained traction -- a pity, since as sunshine pop albums go, this one was, well, solid. It was released with this track ordering and title on the Pony Canyon label in Japan, then reconfigured slightly for a U.S. album release the next year under a different title, The Land of Pure Imagination. Replaced were three tracks: two forgettable lullaby ditties (Sleep Children, Til We Meet Again) and one bona fide candy-coated delight (replete with toy piano melody), What You Don't Know About the Girl. The rest of the album continues in the sunny power pop mold; it doesn't tip over into exceedingly twee or baroque territory, but rather emphasizes bright melodies and playful arrangements. Manning, who played all the instruments and produced, sometimes toys too much with fuzz and treble and such, but his songwriting sensibilities, honed over his years with Jellyfish, Imperial Drag, and the Moog Cookbook, remain acute if sometimes oversweetened. Well worth seeking out.

At the same time, Roger co-founded The Moog Cookbook, which was started solely as a means to have a forum to express his and his partner’s love for the bygone era of vintage synthesizers and exotic keyboards. It was this duo that lead to his longtime relationship with Beck Hansen.

W This is a band that’s been requested by a lot of people and we're talking about the group Jellyfish. They were a short lived band based out of California that only lasted for about half a decade and put out two studio albums, but they would be hugely influential and develop a cult following. . The nucleus of the of the band was made up of drummer/singer Andy Sturmer and singer/keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning Jr., The pair would cycle through a revolving lineup of instrumentalists and today we're talking about the story of Jellyfish a band that ended too soon.
The band’s story dates back to the 70’s when Andy Sturmer and Roger Joseph Manning Jr met in high school in San Francisco and bonded over their love of all things jazz, post-punk, and British pop. Sturmer played in his high school’s jazz band and showed promise as a gifted musician who could sing and play drums at the same time. Manning would tell Classic Rock magazine “I’ve never seen anyone of his age with that expertise and command of his instrument. Andy was one of the first kids in our town who took it seriously and had a goal. He was my hero.”
Following highschool Manning moved to Los Angelesand was admitted to University of South California to study musical composition and became enamored with the local music scene.. LA was alive to the sounds of post-punk, the Byrds-obsessed Paisley Underground movement and, most prominent of all, glam-metal, which was exploding from the Sunset Strip. But Manning would be captivated by an LA band that stood apart: the flamboyantly attired pop-rockers Redd Kross.
Soon enough Sturmer and Manning would join the act Beatnik Beatch, which was signed to Atlantic Records. They would soon leave the group after collaborating with one another and they developed their own musical style and in 1989 they formed the group Jellyfish. Combining the musical stylings of The Beatles, Cheap Trick, ELO, and Queen Jellyfish would become pop rock pioneers and develop what many would consider their own unique sound.
Even after the pair left Beatnik Beatch they were still technically signed to Atlantic Records but they weren’t a priority for the label.
The band’s career began at a time when rock music was undergoing a massive shift from pop-influenced and hair metal to the dark gloomy sound of alternative rock at the turn of the new decade. Jellyfish, didn’t really fit what record labels were trying to push in the early 90’s.
The aesthetic of the band was completely off the wall - think steampunk meets psychedelic hippie.
In a 1993 L.A. Times article, Sturmer said that the group “never tried to suck up to any genre of music. We just did what came naturally to us and didn't worry about it.
After they were signed to Atlantic, records they recorded over the course of a year, becoming the subject of a bidding war with 8 labels The band would eventually settle with Charisma records who gave the band total creative control and their first record Bellybutton was released on July 27, 1990 when hair metal was still highly popular. The band was always aware of the fact that they were entirely contrary to what was going on in popular music at the time. The top performing single, Baby’s Coming Back, would hit the Billboard Top 100 charts but album sales were kind of slow only topping out at 100,000 units. The band’s singles also got the video treatment which got some lay on MTV, but Jellyfishbut was far from being considered a household name, but they did find high profile fans. The band would tour with southern rock group the black crowes who took jellyfish out on tour in 1991.
Member Jason Faulkner briefly joined the group with the bait of a major label deal and would stay with them through the recording of Bellybutton. Faulkner and Sturmer immediately clashed. In a 2014 Louder Sound online article, Faulkner said “I immediately had trouble with Andy - he’s just a difficult guy.” Andy had a real strong idea of what he wanted to do, and I found that my voice wasn’t as loud,” “They weren’t open to doing any of my songs, and I didn’t want to be a sideman.
With personality conflicts gong on, Faulkner still has fond memories of the first album telling louder sound It was a really exciting time making that record, but also bittersweet,” says Falkner. “The

The Lickerish Quartet is a supergroup of prolific songwriters and musicians formed in 2017: three former members of the legendary band Jellyfish. For the first time since 1994, Eric Dover, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Tim Smith have united to create music together. According to the group, “they simply picked up where they left off.”

The Lickerish Quartet’s “supergroup” classification is well deserved, as the trio have individually had monstrous careers as songwriters, producers, and session/touring musicians.

Roger Joseph Manning Jr. may very well be one of the most recorded session musicians of all time, with over 500 credits to his name across multiple genres. Jay-Z, Johnny Cash, Blink-182, Adele, Marilyn Manson, Beck, Air, and Cheap Trick are just a fraction of the incredible artists he’s worked with over the years.

Eric Dover is a fantastic guitar player and singer, who notably performed vocals on the Slash’s Snakepit debut release, It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere. He worked with Roger in a band called Imperial Drag in the ’90s after Jellyfish’s split, and he also joined Alice Cooper for a stint in the early 2000s. Outside The Lickerish Quartet, he currently fronts a band called Sextus.

Tim Smith is a songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s performed live with countless amazing artists, including Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, Kid Rock, Levon Helm, and many others. Tim makes his own music as one half of a duo called Umajets; Manning and Dover helped record their debut album Demolition in 1994, marking the last time the three had collaborated until 2017.

Frater lets us in on the story behind the new tracks, starting with the A-side that's also the lead track on new album EARWORMS: “This is a tale about actor and a paparazzi who start an affair; but to avoid being hounded by the press the paparazzi leaks multiple fake stories into his own newspaper in the hope to mask the scandal with smoke and mirrors.”

The track features the legendary Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish) on backing vocals, and Frater tells us a bit about how this came about: “While writing this song at the piano I kept hearing the little Queen vocal stab from Jellyfish’s 'All Is Forgiven' in my head at the end of each chorus. So when I recorded it I sampled the record and pitch shifted it into key….it sounded great, but a voice in my head kept wondering, I wonder if Roger would be up for recreating it properly…..he was! And an incredible musician to work with!”

He writes the papers so they hit the ground
Read that you’re giving him the run around
Well ain’t nothing but the truth

She sells her story to the daily hell
Don’t trust a word it’s only kiss and tell
A little scandal, where’s the proof?

Well did I stay, that’s what they’re starting to say
Or did I leave? I don’t know who to believe!

It’s all rumours lying in your arms to night
Its just rumours lying in your arms tonight
Were just rumours, lying in your arms tonight

They say she’s over it and feeling fine
And now you’re dialling up the party line
That speaks nothing for the truth

Desperate times that tell of desperate tails
A red-top press that is too big to fail
But still hangs around for you

But if you go, stayin the night again
Don’t you know, they don’t know what to believe!

Read all about it, you’re a tabloid display,
But I’ll stay a while, I’ll stay a while for you

Don’t put your trust in every word that you read, cos I’ll stay around, I’ll stay around for you.

Don’t put your time in all the games that they play, cos I’ll stay awhile, I’ll stay awhile for you

It’s all rumours lying in your arms to night
Its just rumours lying in your arms tonight
Were just rumours, lying in your arms tonight

(Sensory Lullabies: The Ultimate Tribute to Jellyfish truly IS the ultimate tribute to Jellyfish. The album not only includes 35 of the 38 songs that Jellyfish released on CD, but it also covers both Jellyfish albums - Bellybutton and Spilt Milk - not only in their entirety, but also in their original track sequence. Plus, there are 13 bonus covers of unreleased Jellyfish tracks! It's available on iTunes, Amazon and at the Burning Sky website:

I used Adobe Audition on a PC to record this in my home studio. The audio interface was a Soundblaster Live. The vocals were recorded with a Behringer B-1 large diaphragm condenser microphone. All of the electric guitar parts were played on the Epiphone Dot Deluxe, using a Behringer V-Amp 2. That isn't a real Hofner Beatle bass as played by Paul McCartney - it's an old Japanese copy called a Grant and it's DI'd. The acoustic guitar is a Tanglewood TW15CE-B steel string, a nice instrument with solid top, back and sides. The drums were an old battered Tama Swingstar drumkit with trashed cymbals.
