  • Zakir Hussain and Dave Holland: Crosscurrents | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA

    1:56:00

Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, prolific bassist Dave Holland and their international ensemble perform together as Crosscurrents, a musical exploration of the influence of Indian music on the jazz and rock scenes of the '60s.

    Hear the radio episode:

    —————————————————————

    by NATE CHINEN

Virtuosity — of a dazzling, ebullient, yet altogether generous sort — might be the most obvious bridge between David Holland and Zakir Hussain. But there's also a deep cultural foundation behind their musical dialogue, which forms the beating heart of a project called Crosscurrents.

Hussain, a peerless master of the Indian tabla, and Holland, an English-born bassist of sterling jazz renown, were both shaped in some way by the 1960s, a decade of awakening and convergence. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, we'll explore the influence of Indian music on the jazz and rock scenes of that era — as well as the less familiar story of jazz's influence on the subcontinent, embodied by musicians like pianist and composer Louiz Banks.

We'll hear music from a recent Jazz at Lincoln Center concert led by Hussain and Holland. Crosscurrents also features Banks, his son, drummer Gino Banks, along with acclaimed American saxophonist and flutist Chris Potter, Bollywood vocal star Shankar Mahadevan and Mumbai-based jazz guitarist Sanjay Divecha. We'll also get some valuable outside perspective from percussionist Sameer Gupta and other musicians in Brooklyn Raga Massive, which pursues a similar form of thrumming exchange.

  • Berklee Indian Ensemble ft Shankar Mahadevan - 5 Peace Band

    10:47

The Berklee Indian Ensemble is delighted to present “5 Peace Band” featuring renowned Indian composer and vocalist, Shankar Mahadevan. Composed by John McLaughlin, “5 Peace Band” was most notably performed by 'Remember Shakti', the reformation of 1970s indo-jazz fusion group, 'Shakti'. Led by John McLaughlin (guitar) and Zakir Hussain (tabla), 'Remember Shakti' included U. Shrinivas (mandolin), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), and V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam).

It was indeed an honor for our Berklee Indian Ensemble musicians to reinterpret such an iconic composition, and collaborate on this live performance with Shankar Ji as part of the fourth Berklee India Exchange (BIX) Artist Residency. We also dedicate this video in tribute to John McLaughlin who will receive an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music on July 10th, 2017 in Valencia, Spain.

    About the Berklee Indian Ensemble:
Founded in 2011 by faculty member, Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally, presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and popular music, and has collaborated with various world renowned artists.

  • Janaranjani Jazz

    5:33

A creative mix of musical ideas that showcase the Carnatic raga Janaranjani!

The recital presents a versatile experience of the classical Carnatic raga Janaranjani and its changing moods. A lively start with konnakkol gives way to gentle humming of the tune by a Jazz vocalist. Then exuberant vocals burst forth, celebrating the joy of classical Carnatic Janaranjani with its graceful turns of gamaka and variations of sangathi. Melodious notes from a flute and a keyboard instrument flow into a rhythmic pattern of swaras and jatis, which build up to the well known Thyagaraja kriti “Vidajaaladuraa”. Jazz and instrumental interludes bring the focus back to melody. The singers then go on to invoke the divine mother addressing her as Janaranjani, the people’s goddess. Finally the singers, instrumentalists and konnakkol artists come together in a crescendo of raga and rhythm.

It started two years ago as a casual humming of a tune. When the similarity with the Carnatic raga Janaranjani struck Chandrashekhar, the hum morphed into a musical piece to showcase raga Janaranjani. The team comprising of Chandrashekhar Kalyanaraman, Uttara Swaminathan, Sucheta Sanyal, Adithya Rajan, Sai Prashanth Harihar and Swaminath Jayaraman refined the piece over several weeks to present this final rendition.

  • India Arie - Soulbird Rise - Live at Java Jazz Festival 2014

    11:12

    Lyrics:

    I believe in open doors
    I've taken off the screen
I'm ready to let the world come inside
    And touch my life

I will no longer be defined by
What someone else believes that I am
And now that I have dropped the weight
I am light as a feather
    It's time to elevate

    Soulbird rise
    Lift your eyes
    Spread your wings
    Prepare to fly
    This is the moment
    Of your life
    Go ahead and fly

    I believe in open doors
    I'm outside of the box
    What did not demolish me
    Simply polished me
Now the clearer I can see

I know where I wanna go
I am living in the flow
And now that I have dropped the weight
I am light as a feather
    It's time to elevate

    Soulbird rise
    Lift your eyes
    Spread your wings
    And prepare to fly
    This is the moment
    Of your life
    Go ahead and fly

    I believe in open doors...

  • Remember Shakti - Live at Jazz a Vienne

    50:26

This is one of the best live videos I have ever seen to date. There are no words to describe the musicianship on these songs. Read on...

Remember Shakti is a quintet which combines elements of traditional Indian music with elements of jazz. The band consists of English guitarist John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain (tabla), U. Srinivas (mandolin), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), and V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam), who are all of Indian descent. The band's name is derived from John Mclaughlin's acoustic Indian fusion band Shakti which was active in the 1970s.

Raga cover of the Nina Simone classic, Feeling Good, with an Indian classical music twist. This is a song that was originally composed in 1964 by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, and covered by well-known artists like George Michael, Michael Buble and modern rock band Muse. But it was Nina Simone’s version in1965 that made it popular worldwide. This Raga cover, a Carnatic Progressive Rock…… nearly,  starts with the familiar high energy riff of Feeling Good played on trumpets, followed by a Carnatic Alaap introducing listeners to the song, then on to the first para of the song followed by a beat drop; a percussive blend of Konnokol and Tabla kicks in and an instrumental jam ensues with an energetic guitar solo. The guitar solo transcends into an Alaap solo with Carnatic scats in the background. All the elements come together in a climax leading to the end of the song. Team Aiswarya Akumalla (Vocals), Shraddha Mohan (Vocals), Hariharasudhan V( Konokkol), Rishi Armstrong (Tabla) and Nagaari (Music Production and Arrangement) come together to present this Carnatic Alternative of Feeling Good.

(There is another posting of this but my clip is better quality and gets close up shots) This take on Song of India was a different one than the official one that got on the album and now CD.
