Live from the Cotton Club - April 15, 1940
24 Struttin’ with Some Barbecue (Armstrong) 1:14:57

The Cotton Club was a New York City night club located first in the Harlem neighborhood on 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue from 1923 to 1935, and then for a brief period (1936-1940) in the midtown Theater District. The club operated most notably during America's Prohibition Era. The club was a whites-only establishment even though it featured many of the most popular black entertainers of the era, including musicians Cab Calloway, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Fats Waller, Willie Bryant, vocalists Adelaide Hall, Ethel Waters, and many more.

  • Catch Spiritual Sounds & the Jazz Age with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

    32

Don't miss when the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis revisits two of its most acclaimed originals: Victor Goines' Untamed Elegance and Chris Crenshaw’s God’s Trombones. Each of these suites highlights the ensemble’s boundless creativity, commitment to artistic vision, and the peerless musical range of its individual members.

Come see the show Jan. 10-11:

The show begins with Untamed Elegance, a thoroughly modern trip to the wild and sophisticated Jazz Age of the 1920s. This upbeat, soulful, and characteristically swinging composition reminds us that even the earliest jazz styles are deep, living traditions that continue to inspire awe and delight.

God’s Trombones has been a huge hit with audiences since it premiered in 2012. This epic suite takes inspiration from James Weldon Johnson’s 1927 book of poems, God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse. Through seven distinctive movements, Crenshaw utilizes the full power and range of the JLCO—as well as his own amazing voice— to bring these poems to life on a stage built for music.

Arthur Lange (bj) George Hamilton Green, Joe Green (d,xyl) and Harry A. Yerkes (ldr). Harry Yerkes was a marimba player, inventor, and recording manager who assembled many recording sessions in the early years of jazz. Many of the recording sessions organized by Yerkes used his name for the artist credit, including Yerkes' Jazarimba Orchestra and Yerkes' Marimbaphone Band on Columbia Records, which are estimated to have some of the best selling records of 1919 and 1921. The Happy Six recorded from 1919 to 1923. The group's style ranges from traditional jazz to pop, some of their recordings being an important link between ragtime and early, rudimentary jazz. Yerkes often mixed classical musicians with jazz artists in his sessions, which is why he could be considered an originator of the jazz fusion concept.

    9:30

  • Jazz Age 1927: Marvelous! - Johnny Marvin & Ensamble

    3:11

Johnny Mavin with clarinet, cornet and piano – Marvelous, Fox-Trot (Breen-DeRose) Victor 1927 (USA)

NOTE: Johnny MARVIN – called “a voice of the 1920s” - was along Cliff Edwards and Gene Austin, one of the most popular solo singing Victor artists in the 1920s. While, however, Edwards or Austin mostly recorded ballads, Johnny Marvin’s recordings are bright, upbeat tunes that are quintessential 1920's. He played several string instruments and was a ukulele virtuoso and many uke fans are attracted to his recordings for that reason. Marvin was also in vaudeville and on the radio, having two shows in the early 1930's. In the mid 1930's he also wrote songs and popular Radio shows. Marvin died in 1944, while still in his forties.
