  • THE FUNS NOT OVER - The James Phillips Story

    5:06

James Phillips, who died aged 36 in July 1995, was a composer, musician, bandleader and the voice and conscience of a generation of white South Africans. His Afrikaans alter ego Bernoldus Niemand’s 1983 single, “Hou My Vas Korporaal” (“Hold Me Tightly, Corporal”) became an anthem of the End Conscription Campaign and spawned “alternative” Afrikaans rock music and the Voëlvry movement. In 1985, with his beloved Cherry Faced Lurchers, he recorded the gut-wrenching “Shot Down”, that addressed both white privilege and the violence of the apartheid state. James Phillips’ legacy is that of one of this country’s most aware, articulate and passionate artists. He was a genius, a satirist, a poet and probably one of the most accomplished songwriters that South Africa has ever produced. “The Fun’s Not Over” tells James’ story in his own words and through the voices of journalists like Max du Preez, satirists Zapiro and Pieter Dirk Uys, his musical collaborators and label-mates like Koos Kombuis and Vusi Mahlesela, contemporary artists like Jack Parow and his friends and family.

  • JAMES PHILLIPS & THE LURCHERS - Moses

    5:10

Moses was composed by James Phillips, a much respected South African musician who died tragically in 1995. He only lived one year of his life in something that he'd always yearned for, a free South Africa. He wrote this song just after Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison. The chorus line sums up James' hopes and fears: Hey Moses, we think you're the best, please don't turn out like all of the rest. I think James would not have been disappointed by the way Madiba turned out.

I have taken the liberty of nicking images (low res unfortunately) off the internet to illustrate the atmosphere in South Africa in the week of mourning. Thanks to all that took the photos, I know not who you are. Also ta to First Rand (the opening) and Nandos (the closing) - these are two corporate media placements that appeared just after Madiba passed away. Thanks to Zapiro for his brilliant as usual cartoons. The footage of James Phillips & The Lurchers was shot at the Tandoor in Johannesburg in 1993 odd. Oh, and thanks Mr President for the cameo.

The song is from the album Sunny Skies on Shifty Records ( Download it here:

LYRICS: Moses (James Phillips) published by Shifty Music (ZA)
Hey Moses, you're back with us now
Whose going to save us from the sacred cows
Hey Moses, I think you're the best
Please don't turn out like all of the rest

Hey Moses, you put a smile on my face
but can you save this place
Hey Moses, I think you're the best
Please don't turn out like all of the rest
    Because there's so much confusion,
    I'm so helpless, I don't know what's next.
    Help me!

Hey Moses, you've got the job
but can you tame the mob
Hey Moses, you're looking so cool
I just hope you can't be fooled

Hey Moses, you've got a lot of grace
but can you save this place
Hey Moses, I think you're the best
Please don't turn out like all of the rest
    Because there's so much confusion,
    I'm so helpless, I don't know what's next.
    Help me!

To walk down the beach for a year with no fear
and to fly in a wind that's not ill
and to know, just to know
it won't end in the streets
    passing by
and the sky won't come down on our heads
    safe in bed.

Hey Moses won't you bring out the bells
and send the devil to hell
right out and send the devil to hell

One day we will find that misty mountain
And we will see there the things we see
    Hope for tomorrow
And we can live our lives in peace.
    Help me!

James Phillips was one of the core members of the Voëlvry anti-establishment musical movement that broke down many walls in 1980s, late Apartheid-era South Africa.

He first made a name for himself with the punk band, Corporal Punishment and later The Cherry Faced Lurchers. In 1984, he released what he thought of as nothing more than a novelty Afrikaans album entitled Wie Is Bernoldus Niemand. However, fellow future Voëlvry members, Koos Kombuis (a.k.a Andre Letoit) and Johannes Kerkorrel picked up the album and were inspired to make their own music in colloquial Afrikaans rather than the stuffy style of the then-current Afrikaans music establishment, exemplified by artists such as Bles Bridges, who they thought embodied the worst of the Apartheid-era Afrikaans mentality.

Phillips became an integral part of the Voëlvry movement but, after the movement's members went their own ways, he lost his way, essentially becoming a bum, living a semi-nomadic existence and drinking heavily.

He always felt that he had become famous for a joke album and no-one ever took what he considered his real musical output seriously. He released a couple of albums (Soul Ou and Sunny Skies) though that he thought better represented his true artistic voice before he died due to a car crash in the early hours of the morning near a friend's farm outside Grahamstown in 1995. He lay in the crash for several hours before being found. He eventually died 3 weeks later from complications due to pneumonia brought about by the crash and its aftermath.

He leaves a musical legacy that is quintessentially South African and criminally under-appreciated.

My broken heart makes the whole world sad
Nobody can be what you want them to be
    Nobody's fool breaks nobody's rule
My broken heart is all I can see

  • Solo Collaboration #2 ft. Gabe Pietrzak, Andrew Virrueta and James Phillips

    1:00

Here's the second installment of my online solo collaborations. The reason I wanted to start doing these was to showcase all the nuances of lead guitar (in 1 minute examples) and how the articulation and note choice varies so drastically from each individual. The conversation of video manipulation, editing and miming in today's climate is ruining the integrity of guitar. With these I want to get raw, one take recordings from people I really admire. It's the string noise, slides, feedback and mistakes that make us human and ultimately in the end sound more interesting than reamping guitar pro...

  • Phillip Phillips - Dance With Me Official Performance | Vevo

    2:52

Phillip Phillips has told interviewers that the songs on his 'Collateral' album are fueled by both anger and love. No wonder it sounds so diverse. The singer is known for his 'American Idol' win in 2012, but he's steadily proven himself as an artist since then, clocking victories with Home and Gone Gone Gone. The charm he brings to the tracks on 'Collateral' became even more apparent when he hit our studios to perform both Magnetic and Dance With Me. He really gets to the heart of these tunes in a stripped-down setting.
