  • Papua New Guinea Investment Week 2019 | Review

Following a turbulent period in PNG politics, new Prime Minister James Marape made his first public address to the business community during PNG Investment Week 2019. Speaking in refreshingly honest terms about the country’s economic challenges, the prime minister also laid out an optimistic vision for capitalising on Papua New Guinea’s abundance of natural resources to promote economic diversification and sustainable, inclusive growth. In the latest OBG podcast, Regional Editor for Asia, Patrick Cooke, and Editorial Manager for PNG, Tjeerd Ritmeester, got together at the end of a busy week to reflect on how the business community is likely to respond to the PM’s pronouncements and discuss the key takeaways from PNG Investment Week 2019.

  • Updates to NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework

This session will highlight the activities begun by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education program office at NIST to update the NICE Framework. At the November NICE Conference, a request for comments was issued to gather input on potential improvements to the NICE Framework, a national-focused standard that categorizes and describes cybersecurity work published. Input was also gathered up until January 13th on awareness, applications, and uses of the NICE Framework. This session will explore some of that RFC input and will also tee up the public, transparent, and consensus based processes that NIST will use to develop an update to the NICE Framework helping it to grow to be the resource and standard that best supports our nation’s workforce, training, and education needs.

  • Cooper Academy 2017 Ribbon-Cutting!

Cherish the Past. Embrace the Future. Change the World.
We couldn't think of better words to fly in front of Cooper Academy.

The roots of this school go back to Clayton's first school for blacks in 1889. In a time of segregation, William Mason Cooper High would become an outstanding school - with African-American teachers and students achieving academic success, bringing home state championships and recording popular musical albums with their voices of force and feelings. In fact, those members of Cooper's 1963 Jubilee Singers returned to Cooper today to raise up their voices once again! They were joined by Cooper alumni like Mayor Jody Mcleod and Councilman Jason Thompson and dozens of former & current students, teachers and community leaders - ushering in yet another rebirth for Cooper - as a college prep and dual language elementary school. Wow! What an awesome turnout for the ribbon cutting ceremony! Councilman Butch Lawter, Town Manager Adam Lindsay and Police Chief Blair Myhand were proud to be there showing support! Cooper couldn't have done it without the Clayton Chamber of Commerce and their giant scissors! #community
Thank you to Johnston County Public Schools and its leaders for having the vision to re-invent this true community school and huge applause to Principal Jocell Flores and her amazing staff and teachers for breathing incredible enthusiasm into this school's new re-start. Monday will be the beginning of more great history-making at Cooper and we can't wait to spread the news of your successes! Go ROCKETS! Cherish the Past. Embrace the Future. Change the World! We LOVE it!
If you'd like to look through the wonderful collection of photos on the history of Cooper High School, please check them out in the Clayton Library's amazing online collections:

  • Susan Cameron, CEO, Reynolds American Inc. – Episode 14

Susan M. Cameron served as president and CEO, as well as executive and non-executive chair of the board of directors, of Reynolds American Inc. between 2004-2011 and 2013-2017. When RAI acquired Lorillard, Inc. for about $29 billion in 2015, it was reported to be the largest acquisition undertaken by a female CEO. In the period during which Cameron held leadership roles at RAI, the company’s total return to shareholders increased 1,335 percent, and the company’s stock price rose 627 percent. Cameron also serves as a non-executive director on the board of Tupperware Brands Corporation. Susan received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in business administration from Bellarmine University. A brand marketer at heart, Cameron started her career in the tobacco industry in 1981 when she joined Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. Susan worked in a number of countries around the globe before returning to the U.S. in 1999 and being named CEO of Brown & Williamson in 2001. When Brown & Williamson’s U.S. business was merged with RAI’s R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 2004, Susan was named CEO of the new parent company, Reynolds American Inc. Since then; RAI has grown from a market capitalization of about $6 billion to its current valuation of more than $60 billion. Susan’s management philosophy is simple: in the consumer-goods industry, any company’s greatest assets are its brands and its people. Investing in both is the best way to ensure success. An avid advocate for women’s leadership, Susan frequently speaks to university and professional groups on leadership development. During her tenure as RAI’s CEO, she was recognized multiple times by publications including Forbes magazine, FORTUNE magazine and the Financial Times as one of the most powerful women in business. In 2016, FORTUNE magazine named Cameron as one of its top 50 businesspeople of the year, based both on RAI’s performance under her leadership as well as her record of taking “bold, visionary steps.” Susan is very active in community development activities and has served on the boards of two United Way organizations, the YWCA, Wake Forest University, Salem College, Experiment in Self Reliance, the Winston-Salem Alliance, and Old Salem. Since 2011, she has served on the board of trustees of her undergraduate alma mater, the University of Florida.

  • Anybody Here

This is track 5 from the 1973 album entitled Beams of Heaven.
    Lead by Sherline Hall
    Written by J. C. White
Helen J. H. Stephens was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was educated in the public schools in New Orleans and obtained her degree of music from Dillard University of New Orleans, Louisiana. While attending Booker T. Washington High School, Helen played the piano for weekly assembly programs, sang in the school choir, performed in operettas, and was active in the school band. While in New Orleans, she sang with a choral group, “The Southland Spiritual Chanters”. Helen, being the aggressive and progressive woman formed her own group “The Ebenezer Echoes”. In addition to this, she played for several churches in the area.

After completing her degree at Dillard University in 1949, Helen married Arnold E. Stephens (1927-2009) in 1950 and shortly thereafter moved to California in 1953. She initially played for the Solid Rock Baptist Church of Oakland. She also played at the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, Berkeley California, and the Antioch Baptist Church of Oakland, California. Helen was most recently a member of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Gordon Humphrey, Jr.

In 1956, Helen organized the “Stephens Singers”. In 1969, she organized the gospel group, “The Voices of Christ” of Berkeley, California with 23 members. By 1970, the choir had grown to 92 members strong. The choir has recorded eight albums and has received numerous awards. The choir is the Hall of Fame of the Bay Area Gospel Academy Awards presented by the late Dr. Justin S. Cummins and the G.L. Bedford Specials. Many outstanding music directors and gospel singers were trained under the direction of Helen Stephens.

Helen has many ‘firsts’ to her credit along with being the founder of the “Voices of Christ”. She also organized the Northern California Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and remained as chapter representative until retiring in 2013.

At the invitation of the California State College of Hayward, Helen introduced and incorporated gospel music into that institution’s curriculum and instructed there for six years. She was a teacher of gospel music at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California and formerly Dominican College of San Rafael, California.

In 1979, Helen became the director of the “The Lighthouse Singers of Marin”. The choir was formed from the Family Light School of Music and the Tamalpais Singers. Under Helen’s fine direction, they sang throughout the Bay Area, California and nationally. As an example of her influence, the Lighthouse Singers of Marin won an award at the Bay Area Gospel Academy Awards for the most promising choir of 1983. Helen and the Lighthouse Singers have completed two recordings, their first “See the Glorious Light” and the second “Lighthouse Sings Steven Roberts Music”. In addition to being one of the greatest directors around, Helen also sang beautifully.

In 1992, Helen was appointed to the National Board of Directors of the Gospel Music Workshop of America in Chicago, Illinois. Helen was also appointed to and served on the Marin Arts Council in Marin County for two (one year) terms. In May 2004, the Bell Grove Theological Seminary awarded Helen with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music Ministry in a ceremony in Oakland, CA.

Helen attributes her success in gospel with Northern Cal, Voices of Christ, the Lighthouse Singers, to her faith in God and the support of Arnold E. Stephens, her husband for 59 years. Helen Stephens’ goal in life would be to spread the inspiration of gospel music and teachings for the education, spirit, and joy to the world.

Helen passed away on May 3, 2014.
