    Vivaldi: Flute Concertos Op.10

Vivaldi was one of the first composers to focus on the transverse flute as a viable solo instrument, and he may have even been the first to dedicate a whole publication to the flute family. His Opus 10 was published by Michel-Charles Le Cène in around 1728, though in reality many of the works in the collection were revised versions of earlier compositions, with Vivaldi capitalising on the popularity of the flute and rewriting material previously used for other instruments. Adding descriptive elements to the movement names, often connected to natural phenomena – such as ‘La tempesta del mare’ – was another way of boosting sales, something the composer had already discovered with his publication of The Four Seasons some years earlier. Vivaldi wrote over 500 concertos during his lifetime, and his expertise in this field is particularly evident in the exchanges between the ritornello and the orchestral tutti: while the ensemble comes together perfectly in the tutti, the soloist is really given a chance to fly in the soaring ritornelli, showcasing the instrument to its fullest.

Performing these works is Italian flautist Mario Folena, principal flautist of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto since 1982. He has previously collaborated with many prominent ensembles, including I Solisti Veneti and I Filarmonici di Verona, and is a respected teacher of the Baroque flute, having given summer courses at the Fondazione Cini in Venice and the conservatoires of Padova and Parma. He is joined by L’Arte dell’Arco, led from the front by violinist Federico Guglielmo, whose exuberant and thoroughly researched Vivaldi performances have previously garnered high praise.

Vivaldi’s six Concertos for flute Op.10 nearly attain the same popularity as the Four Seasons. Published in Amsterdam in 1728 they contain some of Vivaldi’s most famous concertos: Il Gardellino, La Notte and the Tempesta di Mare. Music of wonderful invention, drama, tone painting and instrumental virtuosity.
Played on original instruments by soloist Mario Folena, a pupil of Jean-Pierre Rampal and Rene Clemencic, principal flutist of the famous Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, and veteran of the Historically Informed Performance Practice. Federico Guglielmo leads his ensemble l’Arte del’Arco, lifelong champions of the Red Priest from Venice.
Performance is based on the new Critical Edition of Vivaldi’s works, revealing many new details and insights.

Cesare Ciardi - Flute Concerto in D-major, Op.129

    20:20

Picture: Thomas Miles Richardson Jr. - A View of Bellagio looking across Lake Como (1861)

Cesare Ciardi (28 June 1818 -- 13 June 1877) was an Italian flautist and composer.

Work: Flute Concerto in D-major, Op.129 (1859) revised and orchestrated by Roberto Fabbriciani.

    Mov.I: Allegro non troppo 00:00
    Mov.II: Andante sostenuto 09:02
    Mov.III: Allegro scherzando 13:43

    Flute: Roberto Fabbriciani

Orchestra: Orchestra Sinfonica del Friuli Venezia Giulia

    Conductor: Stefan Fraas

Cesare Ciardi composed only one flute concerto, the Gran Concerto in D, Op. 129, for flute and piano. He recast the work for flute and orchestra, but it was never published in this version and no copy has yet been found. Op. 129 was written in about 1859, when Ciardi had already been in St. Petersburg for some time, and it brings out all the qualities peculiar to the flute, from its sublime lyrical expressivity to its dazzling agility, giving the soloist wonderful opportunities for virtuosic display. The first movement is in sonata form, and the flute part provides highly inventive variations on the theme. There follow an Andante sostenuto in F major and an Allegro scherzoso finale, marked by an overall lightness and melodic fantasy which make it a delight to hear.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Italian Concerto

    13:24

    - Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685 -- 28 July 1750)
    - Performer: Sviatoslav Richter
    - Year of recording: 1991 (Live in Niederrhein, Germany)

Italian Concerto, for solo keyboard in F major (Clavier-Übung II/1), BWV 971 (BC L7), original title: Concerto nach Italienischem Gusto (Concerto after the Italian taste), written in 1735.

    00:00 - I. Allegro animato
    04:02 - II. Andante
    09:10 - III. Presto

The preface to the first published edition of 1735 (issued by Christoph Weigl of Nuremberg) made it clear that this Übung (or exercise) was written exclusively for a two-manual harpsichord or Clavicymbal, and was, according to the composer himself, intended for lovers of music, for their enjoyment, and not solely for the purposes of their technical advancement. The prescribed two-manual instrument was quite clearly a deliberate choice on Bach's part, since its use enabled the player and indeed the composer to explore new timbral contrasts and dynamic gradations that had been hitherto unavailable to keyboard players. Bach's early exploitation and championship of the expanded potentialities of the harpsichord partly accounted for the phenomenal growth in the popularity of the instrument, especially toward the end of Bach's life.

Described by J.A. Scheibe as a perfect model of a well-designed solo concerto, Bach's Concerto after the Italian Style is not, as was once supposed, a reduction of a full keyboard concerto with orchestra, but rather an attempt at recreating the elements of concerto style in microcosm in a brilliant work for a solo instrument. This work manages to capture and sustain the fundamental principle of dialogue and exchange between concertino and ripieno groups found in any conventional concerto. Using a fascinating and intellectually rigorous alternation between solo and tutti passagework, Bach manages to assign the normal tutti function of the absent orchestra to the more powerful principal manual of the harpsichord, giving the virtuoso writing normally reserved for the soloist to the second manual. It would be reasonable to call the Italian Concerto a compendium-style work. In this regard at least, it has but one equal in the entire literature, this being the Concerto for Orchestra by Bartók.

    - In its ordering of movements, the work follows the standard Baroque concerto pattern, in which a central slow movement (Andante) is framed by two faster ones.
    - Only in the central movement does the music take the form of a highly ornamented melody line for the right hand heard above a straightforward chordal accompaniment. Remarkably, however, the left hand part (in thirds) actually takes up the main melody of the brilliant opening movement (without tempo marking), already remarkable for its élan and bravura craftsmanship and for the way in which the music echoes contemporary orchestral technique so masterfully.
    - The tonal scheme of the Presto finale is very simple, hardly veering away from tonic and dominant harmonies. The payoff here, however, is the tremendous vitality and dynamism of the music, based on nothing more complex than an F major ascending scale from which Bach crafts his essential materials. As one would expect from a master contrapuntist, the theme is heard in augmentation and diminution, in inversion and contrary motion, and indeed in a whole panoply of spectacular concatenations that leave the listener marveling by the close at the fact that this is a work for just one player, two hands, and two manuals!

The Il Gran Mogul (The Grand Moghul) concerto is a concerto for flute by Vivaldi, written in the late 1720s or early 1730s. It was the Indian part of a set of four 'national' concertos, La Francia (France), La Spagna (Spain) and L'Inghilterro (England) - the other three are all lost.

It appeared in a Dutch bookseller's sale catalogue of 1759 and was then lost until 2010, when it was rediscovered by Andrew Woolley in the papers of Lord Robert Kerr (?-1746), the son of William Kerr, 3rd Marquess of Lothian, now in the National Archives of Scotland. Kerr was a flautist himself and is thought to have collected it on a grand tour of Italy.
