  • The Waves of the Danube - Iosif Ivanovici - Classical Guitar

    1:16

Romanian composer Iosif Ivanovici (1845-1902) dedicated this waltz to Emma Gebauer, the wife of a music publisher, when it first went to print in 1880. Emile Waldteufel created an arrangement of the piece that won the top prize in the march category in the Paris Exposition in 1889. Its popularity grew from that point on. The American publisher, Theodore Lohr, released an arrangement of it for piano in 1896. It only enjoyed mild popularity until Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin adapted it in the late 1940s to create their version, dubbed The Anniversary Song.

I learned this song a long time ago and now I found it a couple days ago in my pile of sheet music. It is composed by Ion Ivanovici (Jovan Ivanović, Iosif Ivanovici, Josef Ivanovich)
I like it a lot because it gives the pianist a lot of possibility to change the mood expressed by the song. There is an other very good interpretation out there which is rather sad, so I decided to do the opposite and bring in a funny and happy mood. Like Comment Subscribe and then go eat some chocolate! • Iosif Ivanovici — Valurile Dunării / Waves of the Danube

    7:14

Iosif Ivanovici (Ion Ivanovici, Jovan Ivanović) is Romanian composer of Serbian origin (1845 - 1902); the father of Romanian Easy listening (also known as orchestral pop). He composed over 350 dances, but is best remembered for his waltz - Waves of the Danube and is one of the most famous Romanian tunes in the world.

Waves of the Danube was first published in Bucharest in 1880. It was dedicated to Emma Gebauer, the wife of music publisher Constantin Gebauer. Composer Émile Waldteufel made an orchestration of the song in 1886, which was performed for the first time at the 1889 Paris Exposition, and took the audience by storm. It won the march prize to mark the exhibition out of 116 entries. As Waves of the Danube, the song is also confused with the more famous Danube tune The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II.

Ivanovici's Danube Waves was published in the United States in 1896 and republished in 1903 by the Theodore Lohr Company in an arrangement for piano by Simon Adler. The published version was called Waves of the Danube. The composition is also known as Danube Waves Waltz.

Waves of the Danube became known in the United States only half a century later. Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin published it in 1946 under the name of The Anniversary Song (Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed) and as their own composition. The 1946 sheet music of the song credits the composers as Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin with music by Iosif Ivanovici. Jolson and Chaplin wrote the lyrics while Chaplin adapted Ivanovici's music.

Al Jolson released The Anniversary Song on Decca as catalog number 23714. It first reached the Billboard charts on February 7, 1947 and lasted 14 weeks on the chart, peaking at #2. The Anniversary Song is sometimes confusingly referred to as The Anniversary Waltz, which is actually the name of a completely unrelated song.

There is nothing obscure about this waltz. What is obscure is the composer, who had he not written this waltz, would have been completely forgotten today.

Ion (sometimes known as Josef or Iosif) Ivanovici (1845 – 1902) was a Romanian musician and composer in the military. He spent his career as a bandmaster in the Romanian Army and attained the position of Inspector of Military Music. He was a fairly prolific composer, having composed more than 350 pieces, but none are remembered today except for his Danube Waves. His style is similar to Johann Strauss but with a Gypsy flavor. His obscurity after his death was attributed to the relative isolation of his country and the fact that he became out of favour with the authorities after his death.

Waves of the Danube is one of the most popular waltzes today, and the theme of the first waltz is possibly one of the best known melodies in the world. The waltz was first published in 1880 in Romania, and later orchestrated by Emile Waldteufel. It is also known in the US as The Anniversary Song, in Korea as In Praise of Death (the first popular song in Korea) and The Wedding Waltz with Yiddish lyrics. The melody was also very popular in China from the 1960s.

Waves of Danube comprises 4 waltzes flanked by an introduction and a finale (coda). Both the introduction and the finale opens with tumultuous chords. The famous Danube melody is first heard in the introduction in its Gypsy form. Each waltz comprises two contrasting sections, and throughout, one can hear the Romanian or Gypsy flavour in what is essentially a Viennese Waltz.

Waves of the Danube is one of the most famous piano song composed by the Rumanian composer, Ion Ivanovici. It became more popular after Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss ochestra played it. Just you hear it once, you will love it.

Please forgive me if this song wasn't played well. I was still a little girl 8 years old when I played it in 2018, I've just learned piano in one year plus.
