  • International Blues Challenge 1080p.mov

    2:36

Alabama Music Office.com goes to Memphis, TN to attend the 25th International Blues Challenge. The world's largest gathering of Blues acts represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to take their act to the international stage.
The Blues Foundation held its 25th annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis from February 4th-7th, 2009. This year's challenge features 100 bands and 64 solo/duo acts from 36 states and 9 countries, including Canada, Australia, Israel, Italy, Norway, and, of course, the United States.
IBC winners are chosen in two categories - Blues Band and Solo/Duo Act - and the competitors are chosen by The Blues Foundation and affiliated organizations (mostly local and regional blues societies). Winners are chosen by their performances; IBC semi-final performances were held on Thursday and Friday at local Memphis clubs, and final competitions were held at The Orpheum Theatre on Saturday, February 7th.
To come out on top in the International Blues Challenge can be a real career-maker. The list of current blues artists who have participated in, or won the IBC is impressive, and includes such critical faves as Susan Tedeschi, Tommy Castro, Watermelon Slim, Jason Ricci, Albert Cummings, Eden Brent, and the late Sean Costello, among many others.
Prizes, including cash, gigs, instruments, and publicity services are awarded to the top three Blues Band and the top two Solo/Duo finalists, along with categories like Best Guitarist and Best Self-Produced CD.
Blues-rock trio JP Soars and the Red Hots took first place in the Blues Band category. Sponsored by the South Florida Blues Society, Soars also took the IBC's Best Guitarist Awards.
Piedmont blues guitarist Little Joe McLerran earned first place for Solo/Duo with his old-school, acoustic-style approach to the country blues. Sponsored by the Blues Society of Tulsa, Little Joe is a young 24 years old chronologically, but the guitarist possesses an old soul with an undeniable blues heart. This was his fourth IBC appearance.

  • International Blues Challenge 2020 - Dovydas Band post competition statement

    2:20

We didn't lose, they lost us.
There is a reason why Blues Foundation's slogan is Keeping the blues Alive.
The Blues has been dying, barely hanging in there, and on life support. Many young aspiring artists come to this genre with fresh ideas, innovation, and like anyone with objective perspective says if blues is on life support then let's do surgery. Meaning - let's do something new and help the blues. But the Blues Foundation says No.
Ironically every artist that is fetishized by the Blues Foundation has done something so radical in their time, something new, and innovative, that their contemporaries regarded it as sacrilege. After the International Blues Challenge is over the Beale street will transform back to it's usual state. A place where young people come to party and move to the sounds of the most current music. Dovydas Band will continue performing their genre of music, not constrained by a Blues competition judge rating that spans from 1 to 10, but goes off the charts. Goodbye Blues Foundation.

  • BLUES ASIA TV: International Blues Challenge-1

    1:1:14

FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, musicians from Asia and the Pacific have been participating in the prestigious International Blues Challenge [IBC], sponsored by the Blues Foundation and held each year during the first week of February on historic Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. The 24th IBC is coming up 31 January through 4 February 2012.

With today's program, we are launching a series of shows documenting Asia's participation in IBC, past and present.

The International Blues Challenge is hugely important. It's the Olympics and major international trade show rolled into one event. Each year it has grown, and in 2012 participating will be 118 blues bands and 86 solo-duo acts, along with 22 entries in the Youth Division [musicians age 20 and below]. Altogether that's 226 competing blues acts from around the world, including France, Croatia, Finland, Norway, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Canada, the Netherlands, Israel, South Africa -- AND Taipei, Manila, Melbourne, Sydney, Southeast Queensland and Auckland. With all this emerging blues talent congregated in one place, it is no wonder that music industry movers-and-shakers converge on Beale Street looking for the next big international act.

In this show today, we look at some of the bands from Asia and the Pacific that have participated in IBC in the past -- and who have received top recognition. Unsurprisingly, all of these bands and performers have gone on to become giants in the music scene in their home country. And equally important, they have all brought back home knowledge and experience that helps to elevate musicianship among their peers. We at Blues Asia Network hope to see increased participation in IBC by regional bands.

Here's what is in today's show:

    00:00 -- Introduction

03:40 -- Peter Madcat Ruth [US], Christmas greetings from US to Asia

07:50 -- Chicken Shack Revival [Singapore], Christmas greetings from Asia to the world

Ralph de Jongh at the International Blues Challenge-Memphis 2 Feb 2011
held at the Westin Hotel -Memphis-TN-USA
On this day many people impressed with Ralph talent came over to meet and greet him.. The atmosphere was quiet but with the great style of an international hotel. Many came to me asking for Ralph visit cards. During the day walking on the Beale street he was being recognized at one of the most popular streets in Memphis. Great feeling!
    Enjoy the song friends.
    With love,
