Tabla - Raul Sengupta l MUMBAI RIVER by GEORG GRATZER & AMRIDAN

Mumbai River is my musical take on one of the most diverse cities I have been to.
After having suffered for three days from a terrible food poisoning caused by a local Chicken Wrap I left my place in Thakur Village to go for a little walk. Still being very exhausted I watched all the craziness happening around me and suddenly this melody came to my mind......

  • JOHN MAYER & His Indo-Jazz Fusions: Serenade from Etudes TONY COE FHR01

    6:35

    Purchase here:

    JOHN MAYER (1929-2004)
Indian-born violinist and composer John Mayer's groundbreaking recordings from the 1960's with his band Indo-Jazz Fusions probably gave birth to the term world fusion. For this CD, the brand new First Hand label has remastered some of Mayer's finest work. Even though Etudes was recorded in 1969, it still sounds remarkably current. In many ways, this kind of fusion has made a comeback in recent years. Radha Krishna is an unflinchingly erotic musical play, featuring excellent sax work from Tony Coe.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
    Learn more about the music:

Jesse Bannister deviated from the constrictions of his jazz school curriculum to delve deep into Hindustani music, and has worked tirelessly to adapt its subtle inflections and swooping melodies to the saxophone. He studied with British sitar maestro Dharambir Singh, and also received instruction from Benares vocal legends Rajan & Sajan Mishra. Over the years he developed an idiosyncratic approach to Indo-jazz, overflowing with fine-lens dynamic control and divine rhythmic phrasings.

His career has seen him write for Bollywood, synchronised swimming performances, and the Rugby World Cup, and collaborate with musicians including Aruna Sairam, Bickram Ghosh, Talvin Singh, and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He teaches at Leeds College of Music, leading a course called IMOWI (Indian Music on Western Instruments), and has launched innovative projects including raga playing cards and the Groove India iOS app. He regularly tours with his jazz quartet, but the purity of unamplified acoustic sound is at the heart of his approach (recent videos include solo ragas recorded in the complex acoustics of Cumbrian caves). Pandit Jasraj once described him as ‘the future of Indian classical music’. Listen to more of Jesse here:

    Press Quotes

“The remarkable thing about this important work of John Mayer's is that, though commissioned in 1976, it lay languishing in the vaults for three decades… How good that this work has now seen the light of day.” (Musicweb-International)

“That this album sat unreleased for 30 years is almost a crime. It's a brilliant, ground breaking work that sounds fresh even after languishing for three decades. It's a shame that Mayer didn't live to see the eventual release of Dhammapada. It could well be his finest achievement.” (All Music Guide)

“…Mayer’s arrangements for this stellar band are as deft as they are ambitious. A fitting tribute to the late great visionary and one his son Jonathan, who came across the tapes in 1990, should be proud of.” (Straight No Chaser Magazine)

“Full of Mayer’s signature touches there are the dynamics of contemplation and helter-skelter, swinging jazz melting into temple bells, koto and sitar, extraordinary juxtapositions and adventurous scoring and great paying as well…. Dhammapada is a major addition to the Mayer canon and the East-West vocabulary.” (Jazzwise Magazine ****)

This is the work of a brilliant and complex musical mind and deserves great credit for attempting such a vast canvas…” (Manchester Evening News)

Jazz is a type of African-American music that originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century in the Southern United States as a combination of European harmony and forms with African musical elements such as blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swung note. Jazz has also incorporated elements of American popular music.

As it spread around the world, jazz drew on different national, regional, and local musical cultures, giving rise to many distinctive styles: New Orleans jazz dating from the early 1910s, big band swing, Kansas City jazz and Gypsy jazz from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, Afro-Cuban jazz, West Coast jazz, ska jazz, cool jazz, Indo jazz, avant-garde jazz, soul jazz, modal jazz, chamber jazz, free jazz, Latin jazz, smooth jazz, jazz fusion and jazz rock, jazz funk, loft jazz, punk jazz, acid jazz, ethno jazz, jazz rap, cyber jazz, M-Base and nu jazz.

Louis Armstrong, one of the most famous musicians in jazz, said to Bing Crosby on the latter's radio show, Ah, swing, well, we used to call it syncopation, then they called it ragtime, then blues, then jazz. Now, it's swing. White folks - yo'all sho is a mess!
