  • The Cranberries ZOMBIE Live, Goodbye Dolores ORiordan

Zombie is a protest song by Irish rock band The Cranberries, written about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, and in memory of two young victims, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry. It was released in September 1994 as the lead single from their second studio album, No Need to Argue (1994). The song was written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, and reached No. 1 on the charts in Australia, Belgium, France, Denmark and Germany. It won the Best Song award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.

On 15 January 2018, lead singer Dolores O'Riordan died unexpectedly in London, where she had arrived for a recording session.

Their music has been likened to singers such as Sinéad O'Connor and Siouxsie and the Banshees. O'Riordan stated her singing style incorporating yodeling was inspired by her father who used to sing The Lonesome Cattle Call: I just kept with my father all the time, just copying him and eventually I learned how to do it. Then over the years there were artists like Sinéad O’Connor and Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees and even Peter Harvey was doing it. It was something that you could work into The Cranberries’ format because a lot of that was used in religious Irish music.

The Cranberries rose to international fame in the 1990s with their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, which became a commercial success.

The Cranberries are an Irish rock band formed in Limerick in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn (later replaced by Dolores O'Riordan), guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Although widely associated with alternative rock, the band's sound also incorporates indie pop, post-punk, Irish folk, and pop rock elements.

    [Verse 1]
    Another head hangs lowly
    Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
    Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me
    It's not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fightin'
With their tanks, and their bombs
And air bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are cryin'

In your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head?
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie, oh

    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du
    Du, du, du, du

    [Verse 2]
    Another mother's breakin'
    Heart is takin' over
    When the violence causes silence
    We must be mistaken

    It's the same old theme
    Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they're still fightin'
With their tanks, and their bombs
And air bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dyin'

In your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head?
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie

  • Linger - Cranberries

    Music - Blog - Merch - Love

    Come say hi:

If you, if you could return
    Don't let it burn
    Don't let it fade
I'm sure I'm not being rude
    But it's just your attitude
    It's tearing me apart
    It's ruining every day
    For me
I swore I would be true
    And fellow, so did you
So why were you holding her hand?
Is that the way we stand?
Were you lying all the time?
Was it just a game to you?

    But I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

Oh, I thought the world of you
I thought nothing could go wrong
But I was wrong, I was wrong
If you, if you could get by
    Trying not to lie
    Things wouldn't be so confused
And I wouldn't feel so used
    But you always really knew
I just want to be with you

  • The Cranberries singer Dolores ORiordan dies, aged 46

Irish singer-songwriter Dolores O'Riordan, frontwoman of rock band The Cranberries, died suddenly in London. She was 46. Full story:

  • Dolores ORiordan Dead Cranberries Linger

Linger by The Cranberries is a tribute to their great lead singer Dolores O'Riordan who died unexpectedly on January 15, 2018. She was just 23 when The Cranberries performed at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles in 1994 (video thumbnail).

Los Angeles Times article: Dolores O'Riordan, whose urgent, powerful voice helped make the Irish rock band the Cranberries a global success in the 1990s, died suddenly on Monday at a London hotel. She was 46.

The singer's publicist, Lindsey Holmes, confirmed she died in London, where she was recording, No further details are available at this time, Holmes said, adding that the singer's family was devastated by the news.

London's Metropolitan Police force said officers were called just after 9 a.m. Monday to a hotel where a woman in her 40s was found dead. The police force said the death was being treated as unexplained. The Hilton Hotel in London's Park Lane confirmed that a guest had died on the premises.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins said O'Riordan and the Cranberries had an immense influence on rock and pop music in Ireland and internationally.

To all those who follow and support Irish music, Irish musicians and the performing arts, her death will be a big loss, Higgins said in a statement.

O'Riordan was born Sept. 6, 1971, in Ballybricken, southwest Ireland. In 1990, she answered an ad from a local band in nearby Limerick city — then called the Cranberry Saw Us — that was looking for a lead singer.

A name change and a confluence of factors turned the Cranberries into international stars. Their guitar-based sound had an alternative-rock edge at a time when grunge was storming the music scene.

The band's songs — on which O'Riordan was chief lyricist and co-songwriter — had a Celtic-infused tunefulness. And in O'Riordan they had a charismatic lead singer with a distinctively powerful voice.

Heavy play on MTV for their debut single Dream and the singles that followed helped bring the group to the attention of a mass audience.

The Cranberries' 1993 debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, sold millions of copies and produced the hit single Linger.

The follow-up album, No Need to Argue, sold in even greater numbers and contained Zombie, a visceral howl against Northern Ireland's violent Troubles that topped singles charts in several countries.

The band released three more studio albums before splitting up in 2003. O'Riordan released the solo album Are You Listening in 2007 and another, No Baggage, in 2009.

The members of the Cranberries reunited that year, releasing the album Roses in 2012.

For a time, O'Riordan was one of Ireland's richest women, but she struggled with both physical and mental health problems.

The Cranberries released the acoustic album Something Else in 2017 and had been due to tour Europe and North America. The tour was cut short because O'Riordan was suffering from back problems.
--- update September 2018: The death of Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan has been ruled a “tragic accident” at an inquest at Westminster Coroner’s Court, the BBC reports.

O’Riordan died by drowning after excessive drinking. Expert witnesses said the singer showed no sign or evidence of self-harm. O’Riordan was found dead in the bathtub at her London hotel January 15th. She was 46.

Officials told the inquest that they found empty bottles of alcohol in O’Riordan’s hotel room, including five miniature bottles and a bottle of champagne. There were also containers of prescription drugs with tablets in each, though a toxicology report showed that O’Riordan had only “therapeutic” amounts of medication in her blood. However, her blood alcohol levels were more than four times over the legal driving limit.

The surviving members of the Cranberries released a statement following the inquest, saying, “On January 15th 2018 we lost our dear friend and band mate Dolores O’Riordan. Today we continue to struggle to come to terms with what happened. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dolores’ children and her family and our thoughts are with them today. Dolores will live on eternally in her music. To see how much of a positive impact she had on people’s lives has been a source of great comfort to us.”

The Cranberries will release a 25th anniversary edition of their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, October 19th. The Irish rock outfit began planning the project last year, but put it on hold after O’Riordan’s death. In March, the band announced they were moving ahead with the reissue, as well as a new album they’d begun to record.
