  • You’re Probably Using The WRONG Guitar Strings

    16:10

Does size (String Gauge) matter? In this episode we test whether guitar string gauges actually make a difference in your guitar sound. Rhett Shull, Dave Onorato, Ken Grand Lanyon and myself compare strings sets of .011-.052, .010-.046, .009-.042 and .008-.038 sets of guitar strings with the same guitar and amp combinations for the test. The results are fascinating!

  • Do Big Strings Make A Difference? - 8 Gauge VS 11 Gauge Guitar Strings

    17:37

Do big guitar strings sound different? Stevie Ray Vaughan used very big strings and his guitar tone was fantastic. Billy Gibbons uses skinny strings, and he sounds fantastic. Lets see 1 guitar strung with 8 gauge strings and 11 gauge strings, side by side.

Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.

After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.

Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro)

  • 8s vs 12s Electric Guitar String Challenge!!

    20:51

There's a lot of guitar folklore about players like Stevie Ray, Jimi Hendrix, Billy Gibbons & the like, as to whether or not the string gauge they used really contributed to their unique tones. So we took a Les Paul & a Strat, whacked some extra light/extra heavy strings on them & we compared the tones...
The Les Paul is a Les Paul Classic & the Strat is a modded Squier Classic Vibe.
    Cheers

  • I Bought $1 Guitar Strings From Ebay | How Bad Can They Be?! | Orphee Guitar Strings Demo and Review

It turns out in this day and age you can actually buy an entire pack of guitar strings from Ebay for the low low cost of $1.00. I couldn't help myself and ordered up a pack, how bad can guitar strings really be anyway? Aren't they all the same? Well, actually pretty terrible!

Check out this full unboxing, demo and review of the infamous Orphee guitar strings! I really thought they might end up being fine, but I can't stand the fact that people are actually buying these garbage strings. What do you think?! Let me know down in the comments!

  • Is It WRONG to Tape Snare Wires?

    7:59

Check out TheNonGlamorousDrummer.com for FREE E-Books on Practicing Shortcuts, Kit Setup Tips, Drum Tuning, & MORE!!

Is it dumb to tape your snares….or is it actually brilliant? Let’s find out. We’ll talk about WHY this is even a topic worth thinking about, and we’ll test various amounts of tape on the snare to see what happens. Here’s the cool thing… You can drastically alter the sound of your snare when you use tape on the underside. If you need a funk snare sound or a Motown snare sound - or any super dry snare sound - this just might get you in the ballpark. Getting the right sounds is a huge part of being a drummer in the real world, so this is most definitely a topic worth thoroughly discussing. Whether or not tons of tape is the way to go… we’ll find out in the video. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you grab your roll of gaff tape and test this out on your drum!

    ???? RHYS GILCHRIST -

    ➡️ RICK BEATO'S STRING GAUGE VIDEO -

    ➡️ RHETT SHULL'S STRING GAUGE VIDEO -

    ➡️ ERNIE BALL STRINGS -

    --------------------------------------------

Welcome to today's video! The topic of string gauge has gained some popularity in the YouTube guitar community, with creators like Rick Beato and Rhett Shull recently uploading videos to do with the difference in tone and feel between multiple gauges.

This is not a response to those videos, however 'what string gauge do you use?' is a question I'm often asked online and I figured now's as good a time as any to finally give an answer.

In this video I talk through my experiences of using different gauges on different guitars over the years, and explain why I now use 11's on all of my guitars.

The deciding factor for me is note tone... it's tension. I own multiple guitars with differing scale length's, and because scale length affects string tension, this means that a set of 10's will feel different on a Les Paul compared to a Strat.

Most Fender electrics including Strat's and Tele's have a long, 25.5 scale length, where as most Gibson electrics - like my Les Paul Standard - come in at a shorter, 24.75.

Then you have some electrics - like my D'Angelico Premier DC - that will fit somewhere in between the two, at 25 exactly.

I wanted to get another guitar players perspective on this topic and so I visited my friend Rhys Gilchrist to get his thoughts. Rhys is a fellow guitar teacher based in Edinburgh and I was pleasantly surprised to find out we share the same opinion on the subject.

I mentioned in my recent video about noodling - - that I've started taking private lessons once again. Rhys is the teacher I've been going to. You can find his website linked above - I would highly recommend hitting him up for a lesson. He has a great knowledge of jazz improvisation and is really good at teaching you new information in an easy-to-digest way.

In the A Rosewood Neck Isn't The Only Surprise | 2019 Fender Rariteis Stratocaster Flame Maple Top Review video, I challenged viewers to get the video to 1,500 likes within 3 days and I would do the neck swap between my flame and quilt top stratocasters from the rarities series. We just barely got there, so here I am making good on my promise.

I swapped the necks on the Quilt and Flame Top stratocasters from the rarities series and here are the results. I think these look more traditional now and they would please more people since the colors match. However, at the same time, I think what makes these special are that they have weird coloring options to them. The Flame top definitely looks better with the rosewood fretboard though! Hey guys! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller! In today's video, i'm going to give you all a full breakdown of something wild i just learned about from @Jude Gold 's amazing podcast No Guitar is Safe: @philx1111 's WILD bouzouki tuning trick!
Phil has used this cool tuning technique to make his guitar SCREAM on records by Powder, Our Lady Peace, and numerous other A-List albums. Its really easy to do, and enables you to create sounds that are somewhere between a 12 string and a crazy out of tune double track. I'll definitely be using this technique for recording overdubs in the future!
In this video i will show you the tuning, give you some examples of how to use it, and show you some variations on it too. See what you can use it for in your own playing!
Playing my Les Paul with the db Instrument Amp TrueGlide on the headstock for maximum tuning stability! Its awesome and requires ZERO modifications to your priceless LP. Fractal Audio Axe FX for the mega tone, as always.
Thanks for watching! Hope to see you all at NAMM 2020, and at our show!

  • Buying a Guitar Without Playing It | Mercari Review

    17:37

    Check out Mercari:

If you've ever shopped online for a guitar, you know how fun it can be to browse through the seemingly endless listings to try and find the best guitar for the best deal. This is my Mercari app review where I'll use the online marketplace at Mercari to try and find a guitar that not only looks cool, but fills a void in my guitar collection. When it comes down to it, guitars are tools to do a job, and what better way to find a new tool than by browsing the biggest tool shop in the world–the internet!

The first thing I decided on was that I wouldn't look for any guitars I already owned or that I considered to do the same thing as one in my collection. After that, I decided on a price range to stick to, and then it was off to the races! I was immediately bombarded with hundreds of search results to sift through.

I found it was best to heart certain listings to set up a list of contending guitars that I would then choose from after my search was through. I ended up with some pretty sweet instruments, and had to eliminate some options that other people would probably jump at the chance to buy. In the end, though, I think I made the right choice! :D

If you're in the market for a new guitar, I'd definitely recommend using the Mercari app to see what there is to be found. The marketplace was full of great gear, and I received the guitar I bought faster than any guitar I've ever ordered online, which was pretty awesome. I'll certainly be checking Mercari the next time I want to buy or sell anything, guitars, amps, pedals or otherwise, and I hope you will too!

The new Novo Solus is an amazing guitar, but I want to see what its really capable of. So I wrote a whole track just using one guitar with one pickup.

  • How to Change Electric Guitar Strings

    17:58

In this video I will show you how to change electric guitar strings.

00:15 Tools needed to change strings
    00:45 Start with 6th string
01:02 First Step – Removing the old 6th string
02:15 Second Step – Installing the new 6th string
03:45 Third Step – Stretch the string
05:10 Repeat process for remaining strings
07:30 How often to change your strings
12:45 What to do with string holders

Tools that are needed to change the strings:

    1. Tuner
    2. String Winder
    3. String Clipper
    4. Strings

I always start with the 6th string while changing the guitar strings because it is the thickest string with the most tension.

I don't know if it’s psychological or not but I find it keeps the strings in tune quicker when I change all 6 guitar strings.

Steps for Changing the Guitar Strings:

    1. With the string winder on the tuning peg of the 6th string, ALWAYS pluck the string before you start unwinding the string. This is a very important step because maybe the string was put on backwards or you’re turning the tuning peg the wrong way and you're tightening the string instead of loosening it.

Once you know you’re loosening the string, unwind it all the way. The string winder is a great quality of life tool as you can see in the video. Once the string is off the tuning peg remove it from the guitar.

    2. Thread the new string through the same hole you took the old 6th string out of until it can't travel any further.

The way I was taught is to pull the string fairly straight, not super tight, and mark off one string higher on the string, so for the 6th string you will mark off where the string touches the 5th tuning peg and make a kink towards the ceiling.

Always feed the string through the tuning peg from the floor to the ceiling until the kink touches the 6th tuning peg. Bend the string down creating another kink to lock it into place to prevent the string from slipping.

Hold the string in place (so the string winds straight) and wind the tuning peg with the string winder counter clockwise.

Once the string is relatively close to the correct tension, turn the tuner on and adjust the tension until it’s tuned correctly for E - 6th string.

    3. New Strings will stretch making them go out of tune easily so I will press my thumb and index finger together on the string and run my fingers up the string to help stretch the string out. The string will be flat after this process so re-tune it back to E. Repeat the process a few more times.

    4. Clip the end of the string off a couple of millimeters (1/10th of a inch) from the tuning peg.

The 6th string is complete and now you will repeat the process with the remaining five strings.
    Helpful Hints:
Every time I install a new string on the guitar I will stretch and tune all the new strings I just installed on the guitar.

For the average person the recommended duration to change your strings is every 6 - 8 weeks. If you're not playing a lot every 3 months is recommended to change your strings.

Make sure if your guitar has string holders you place the strings under the holder when you’re installing the string. If you forget to do this step you will need to unwind the string and place it under the string holder and re-tune the strings.
