  • You’re Probably Using The WRONG Guitar Strings

    16:10

Does size (String Gauge) matter? In this episode we test whether guitar string gauges actually make a difference in your guitar sound. Rhett Shull, Dave Onorato, Ken Grand Lanyon and myself compare strings sets of .011-.052, .010-.046, .009-.042 and .008-.038 sets of guitar strings with the same guitar and amp combinations for the test. The results are fascinating!

  • Do Big Strings Make A Difference? - 8 Gauge VS 11 Gauge Guitar Strings

    17:37

Do big guitar strings sound different? Stevie Ray Vaughan used very big strings and his guitar tone was fantastic. Billy Gibbons uses skinny strings, and he sounds fantastic. Lets see 1 guitar strung with 8 gauge strings and 11 gauge strings, side by side.

    ....................................................................................................................
Mike has been playing the guitar since he was 12 years old, and from that first moment his love affair with music and the instrument began. Fresh out of school at the age of 16 he attended the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford and completed a year-long Diploma course.

After finishing the ACM his life as a full time musician began, playing in numerous bands and touring up and down the country playing iconic venues such asThe Shepherds Bush Empire, The Astoria, The Underworld and London’s Jazz Café. He’s also been fortunate enough to support industry legends Paul Weller, Blondie and Katie Melua.

Mike’s session work has led to his working on a variety of projects - from performing with stars such as Ricky Wilson and Diana Vickers, to appearing in many TV shows and adverts. Mike loves being on stage performing, but is equally at home recording in a studio - where he has worked with Alex Von Soos (All Saints, Seal, Atomic Kitten), Mike Horner (The Prodigy, Shakira, Bloc Party), and Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro)

The strings on my semi hollow needed changing, so I figured I'd try putting acoustic strings on it, because I've heard some players swear by putting acoustic strings on an electric guitar. As of now, I frankly think they're full of shit.

It seems to me that the acoustic strings had a thinner sound to them, with less output and more focus in the top end. They were also more percussive than the electric strings. Kind of an interesting sound, but I definitely prefer the sound of electric strings. The acoustic strings, besides being harder to play, felt unnatural to me and seemed to increase the guitar's propensity for feeding back.

  • How to Mute Open Chords on Guitar

    Abridged Script:
In the last lesson in this series we looked at muting barre chords. But there are also many occasions when we want to mute open chords as well. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with playing open chords unmuted and there are many times when allowing the chords to ring freely is exactly appropriate to the song you are playing. But there are definitely times when gaining more precise control over the sound, helps you nail the rhythm you want more accurately.
In general, muting open chords helps you get an edgier, rockier sound. But muting open chords is not quite as simple as at first it may appear. With barre chords we found we could simply relax our grip and switch the sound on or off at will.
To demonstrate this, I want to take you through a version of Ben E King’s Stand By Me played using open chords in G major. Each chord in this song raises different problems, when it comes to taking control of the sound by applying fretting hand muting technique. Here’s how we are going to play it…
The G chord is one of those chords I mute by rotating the hand and allowing the fingers that form the chord to collapse across all six strings like this.
For Em there are two options – either taking a similar approach to what we just did with G. Rotating the shape round, but in this case, bringing in the thumb to take care of the open E string. Alternatively, you can use the two fingers you have spare – the third and fourth fingers – to act as dampers like this.. I find both those techniques quite effective for Em and I advise trying them out to see which one works best for you. You may find that the choice depends on what chord you need to play next.
For the C chord I tend to already have the thumb muting out the 6th string, so again it is simply a matter of rotating the wrist and allowing the fingers to collapse across the remaining five strings.
For the D7 chord we are presented with one of the more difficult open chords to mute. It can be hard to take control of the bottom three strings with the fretting hand in this situation. So, I restrict the range of my strumming hand to just the top four strings. Then I simply relax the fingers that are in touch with the top three strings and at the same time allow a very slight movement of the finger on the third string so that it just touches the open fourth string as well.
So, I hope a look at the detail on each of those chords will help you develop your own methods for muting these chords and all the other open chord shapes you use.

Today we are taking a look at the new for 2020, Positive Grid Spark Amp. This is a dedicated practice amp that not only gives you nearly limitless tonal opportunities but helps spark your creativity.

The biggest features of this amp are:
    Built-in Tuner/Metronome
Ability to automatically create backing tracks based on what you're playing
    Play preset backing tracks
Tells you chord structures of songs and allows you to slow down and loop sections to be able to play them.
Acts as an audio interface and can be recorded directly into your computer.

This is definitely a great practice amp. I won't throw my tube amps away just yet, but it is amazing what you can get for only a couple of benjamins.

  • How To Give A Guitar Lesson - Guitar Questions #4

    11:53

Thanks for watching my video “How To Give A Guitar Lesson”. It doesn’t matter whether your are getting ready for giving your first guitar lesson or if you are trying to establish yourself as a teacher who will be giving guitar lessons on a regular basis – I think my four guitar teaching principles will give you some good food for thought.

It’s kind of silly for me writing about an article about how to give a guitar lesson at this point in my life. After all, I been giving guitar lessons for quite a while by now. My main focus was on beginners and later on I also gave lessons to some more advanced players. So I think it’s fair to say that I have a good amount of experience. However, the fact of the matter is, as I was putting my Online Beginners Guitar Course together, I realized that preparing a guitar lesson for a what I would call ‘virtual student’ is very different from giving a guitar lesson to a physical person. I realized, even for a seasoned guitar teacher like me there is still new things to learn.

Here are my 4 guitar teaching principles

Always be prepared! I must admit, there were a few times here and there where I was giving a guitar lesson without sufficient preparation. I was short on time and had to rush. Now fortunately I was not new to my job, so I was able to kind of make things up on the fly. But it certainly didn’t feel right to me. After that happened a couple of times to me, I made the decision that going forward, I will always prepare well when giving a guitar lesson.

Stay focused! Make sure that there are not distractions when you give a guitar lesson. You definitely want to make sure that there are no iPads, cell phones or other devices while your are in the middle of teaching a guitar lesson. These things have no place while you and your student are focused on the task. So unless you absolutely need these things to conduct your lesson, make sure you get them out of the way.

Always be professional! Of course, I certainly don’t mean to tell you what you should and shouldn’t do. But believe me, it can get tricky when the relationship with your guitar student evolves to something outside of the guitar teaching. I become a psychiatrist, problem solver and other things before I even knew what was happening. There’s nothing wrong with making friends with a student, but keep the personal things and the guitar lessons separate.

Easy wins! It doesn’t matter whether it’s while you giving a first guitar lesson or when your student is already advanced in his learning, easy wins are always great opportunities to keep your students motivation at a high level.

As with everything in live learning how to give a guitar lesson is something that needs practice. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, learn from them and move on. Giving guitar lessons is a very rewarding tasks to me and it’s just fun to see how a student develops and gets better and better under your guidance.

  • 3D BINAURAL GUITARS WITH SEPARATE STRINGS

    2:51

Headphones on for full binaural experience.
The big question is, does it sound like 'real-life' 3D? In short, the answer is yes and no. You certainly have a sense of width, depth, and with a 'moving' automated sound, there's definitely a perception of 3D.

SEPARATE GUITAR STRINGS - ELEVEN IN TOTAL

    * Extreme Roland GR-55 synth re-amping. With re-guitar, re-amping, effects, and individual string software editing.

    GUITAR AUDIO PROPERTIES

    * Notes and chords are perfectly in key. Individual note quantizing is precise and velocities are optimised. Overall the all important performance 'feel' is kept in tact and greatly enhanced.

    * 3D software plugin. With a binaural sound stage you have width, depth and height, so mixes sound more immersive than just simple Left - Right panning.

THE KING WILL COME. We've all heard musicians' and bands struggling to play this classic-rock anthem and totally getting it wrong! It isn't just about Andy Powell's classic reggae/rhythm guitar feel. The second guitar, bass and drums make the whole tune bounce along the way it's supposed to. You can get one instrument wrong with the Wishbone Ash 'vibe' and then it doesn't sound right. Getting it right is the hallmark of the Wishbone Ash sound.

Hope you have enjoyed listening to this example of binaural recording with separate guitar strings.

The price isn't neccessarily too good to be true, but the owner definitely had it priced on the low end of things and didn't have the proper name of the guitar in the title. Is this a scam? • String Gauges - A Guide

    10:25

String Gauges - A Guide (Or What I Use And Why)
What string gauges should you use? Well, that's very much down to the type of player you are and the style of music you play.
In this video I go through what I use, and why. This is a little ol' guide to string gauges, how the affect your sound, guitar playability and so on. Or a 101 if you will.

I talk about the basics of guitar string gauges, what works for me, and in which tunings different gauges work. I also discuss seven stringed guitars.
    Enjoy!

B.B. King is the greatest living exponent of the blues and considered by many to be the most influential guitarist of the latter part of the 20th century. His career dates back to the late forties and despite now being in his eighties he remains a vibrant and charismatic live performer. B.B. King has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux festival, appearing nearly 20 times, so choosing one performance was no easy task. This 1993 concert will surely rank as one of his finest at any venue. With a superb backing band and a great set list its a must for any blues fan.

    The thrill is gone
    The thrill is gone away
    The thrill is gone baby
    The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong baby
    And you'll be sorry someday

    The thrill is gone
    It's gone away from me
    The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away from me
    Although, I'll still live on
    But so lonely I'll be

    The thrill is gone
    It's gone away for good
    The thrill is gone baby
    It's gone away for good
Someday I know I'll be open armed baby
Just like I know a good man should

You know I'm free, free now baby
    I'm free from your spell
Oh I'm free, free, free now
    I'm free from your spell
And now that it's all over
All I can do is wish you well

    Hotel California - Lyrics
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night.
    There she stood in the doorway;
    I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
'This could be heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say
    Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face.
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
    'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
    Just to hear them say
    Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
    Such a lovely face.
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your alibis
    Mirrors on the ceiling,
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said, 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
    And in the master's chambers,
    They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
    Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
    'Relax' said the night man,
    'We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
    But you can never leave!'

  • Dying Fetus Wrong One To Fuck With Full instrumental guitar cover with Bias Amp 2

    5:02

Dying Fetus Wrong One To Fuck With Guitar Cover from their 2017 album of the same name. Another representative band of this style... but yeah this is definitely a fun song to play.

And in 27 years of carreer, John Gallagher definitely knows how to craft some fine DM riffs.

Song tuning is in C#. Here i play in standart D detuned 1/2 step lower with the Digitech The Drop pedal to reach C#.

An occasion to try the new BIAS AMP 2 from Positive Grid.
If i begin now to be a little allergic to amp sim (maybe because i used them a lot for a long time) i have to admit that this one made a pretty good job and it's a nice improvement compared to the previous version.

We just barely got there, so here I am making good on my promise.

I swapped the necks on the Quilt and Flame Top stratocasters from the rarities series and here are the results. I think these look more traditional now and they would please more people since the colors match. However, at the same time, I think what makes these special are that they have weird coloring options to them. The Flame top definitely looks better with the rosewood fretboard though! VERSE 1:
    Grace what have You done
Murdered for me on that cross
    Accused in absence of wrong
My sin washed away in Your blood

    PRE-CHORUS 1:
Too much to make sense of it all
I know that Your love breaks my fall
    The scandal of grace
    You died in my place
    So my soul will live

    CHORUS:
    Oh to be like You
Give all I have just to know You
    Jesus there's no-one beside You
Forever the hope in my heart

    VERSE 2:
    Death where is your sting
Your power is as dead as my sin
The cross has taught me to live
And mercy my heart now to sing

    PRE-CHORUS 2:
The day and its troubles shall come
I know that Your strength is enough
    The scandal of grace
    You died in my place
    So my soul will live

    BRIDGE:

It's all because of You Jesus
It's all because of Your love

  • The REAL way to play Runnin With the Devil by Van Halen! Weekend Wankshop 173

    8:27

    instagram @BenEllerGuitars
    Skype lessons? email BenEllerGuitars@gmail.com

Yo guys! On weekend wankshop 173, Uncle Ben Eller here is gonna decode another classic riff for y'all! I've seen SO MANY bad and inaccurate covers and tabs for Runnin' With the Devil by Van Halen off their classic debut Van Halen 1 album (which is, by the way, one of the most perfect records ever made)!!! This isn't a terribly hard riff to play, but there's a few key points most people notice. I'll also show you the Eddie secrets for perfect slides and palm mutes.

Using my ancient Ibanez RG550 with Fishman Fluence Classic pickups into my Kemper Profiler, which is running those awesome Top Jimi Brown Sound profiles, which are INCREDIBLE!!! Probably the most fun i've ever had with my Profiler. Go buy em NOW!

Also, for those of you reading this, i took an extra step while making this video.... let me know if its worth the extra time it takes! I ran my guitar into Logic and recorded it while filming, then synced that track of guitar to the video itself. Usually i just use the camera mic capturing the guitar tone in the room. This new approach definitely sounds better, but does it make the video exponentially better for you all? Let me know, i aim to please!

In this All Right Now guitar lesson video, I will show you all of the classic chords, riffs and solos from this massive hit by Free.

Guitarist Paul Kossoff has a couple of great solos in this one and I will take you through each one of them note-for-note.

The opening riff to All Right Now is probably one of the most recognizable in the history of classic rock. It requires are pretty large fret-hand stretch in order to finger the chords just like Paul Kossoff did, and in addition the rhythm is very tight. It is a great riff to practice playing in the pocket.

The chorus is a very simple laid back riff based around a couple of power chords, so there shouldn't be much of an issue there.

After those two riffs are out of the way, it is time to tackle the guitar solos. Paul Kossoff's first solo in All Right Now is very blues based with some quick picking and large bends. It is very short but very succinct and in your face so to speak.

After that we will tackle the second guitar solo. This solo is much longer and incorporates melodic slides, oblique bends, fast legato licks and more. You can really study this solo to see how Paul Kossoff tells a story with it. There is a definitely beginning that gradually builds throughout. It perfectly complements this much loved song.

Hope you guys enjoy this great classic from Free!

    Carl...

  • Minuet in G | Classical Guitar | Christian Petzold | NBN Guitar

    1:43

Minuet in G by Christian Petzold has become a firm favourite for classical guitarists all around the world. It's gentle flowing melody is immediately recognisable and it has been transcribed for many instruments and is often played by musicians at the advanced beginner level. For many years this piece was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach but in recent years scholars unearthed information that led to Christian Petzold being named as the original composer. This piece and another minuet were added by Anna Magdalena Bach to her 'Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach' in 1725. Because all of the other pieces in the notebook were composed by her husband Johann or members of the Bach family it was assumed that he had also written this lovely little Minuet in G but thankfully when this piece was discovered in Petzold's harpsichord suite the assumption was found to be incorrect and the authorship was rightfully changed to Petzold.

Help me to create more awesomeness!!

    Performance Points

As the title suggests the piece is in the key of G major. Compositionally the piece uses sequences which is simply put a main phrase or motif that is played in a similar way at a higher or lower points within the scale. The piece itself is probably around grade 3 or 4 Trinity College of London or Associated Board of Royal Schools.

My classical guitar sheet music & classical guitar tabs are available here. I definitely want to encourage you to use the sheet music with tabs version as it contains my fingering suggestions for both hands. • 2010 Gibson Les Paul Chad Kroeger Blackwater Signature Guitar Review + Demo

    21:30

    ????Just Uploaded! ➡️
????Just Uploaded! ➡️ the frontman for Nickelback, Chad Kroeger, is mainly known for playing PRS guitars, Gibson gave him his own signature Les Paul in a limited edition release. Chad likes to play Gibson acoustics, so he essentially had them build an acoustic Les Paul with a built-in ghost Piezo system. This guitar is really bright sounding and fits in a category all on its own.

    The Case...
Chad's signature guitar comes in its original Gibson USA case. Unfortunately, Mr. Kroeger's guitar didn't come with an extra special case like some signature models do, but this black exterior with white interior case definitely does the job. It shows some wear and tear in the form of tolex scratches and chips, but overall, it still does its job. The handle shows some wear, but is currently functioning as are all of the latches. The white interior is in great shape and is free from foul odors. It protects the guitar well and does its job. Some of the original paper work is also inside of the case. Gibson did not issue COAs for this run of guitars since they were made in the USA line - not the Custom Shop.

    The Guitar!

This was a limited edition guitar, but the sources seem mixed. I've seen 200, 400 and 600 quoted as to how many of these were made, but there definitely aren't too many of these around and they don't show up for sale that often. This one has replaced tuners that are a similar Grover Style Tuner but with Kluson like tips. It could be possible just the tips were changed, but the original tips/tuners are not present. The strap buttons were swapped out for Schaller Strap buttons.

What makes this guitar special is its beautiful translucent ebony finish that reveals an insane flame top underneath. It has a Ghost Piezo system installed at the factory. What this is, is essentially an acoustic pickup that is hooked up to your bridge saddles. This gives you realistic Acoustic tones that are definitely usable. This is basically a perfect coffee house / open mic night guitar if you love to play your Les Paul, but need acoustic sounds. You can blend the Piezo with the regular 490R and 498T pickups as well for unlimited combinations. It's also possible to purchase a Y-splitter cord to send the Piezo sound to a separate amp and the traditional humbuckers to another. It's really quite the versatile guitar, but it is definitely bright sounding in all positions and therefor, not a guitar for everyone. The Piezo requires a 9V battery to function and there is some damage to the battery compartment 'door.' This guitar is chambered which makes it really lightweight as well. There are also large stars below the dot side markers on the neck. Chad put those there to help you see the markers at dimly light gigs. Chad also changed up the wiring for this guitar - The Neck Volume and Bridge Volume have been reversed per his design and the traditional bridge tone control is now a master tone for the humbucking pickups and the tradition tone for the neck pickup is now the volume control for the Piezo. The rest of the guitar is pretty much standard.

The face of the headstock shows some string change wear and a few light nicks/dings. The frets show some wear, but are currently playable and do not need work. The frets were polished, the rosewood fretboard was conditioned and a new set of 10s were just strung on the guitar.

The face of the body is in good shape. There are some very minor dings and polishing and picking scratches all around, but nothing that really takes away from the overall look of the guitar. The poker chip has scratches on it. Everything functions the way it should.

The back of the guitar is all black, so as well all black guitars - it will show EVERYTHING from the faintest scratch to the smallest dings. The back of the headstock shows some light wear and scratches, but it is free from breaks, cracks or repairs. The back of the neck has a very tiny touchup area that I still don't even see unless the guitar is viewed under blacklight. The back of the guitar has lots of scratches and buckle wear though the bright lights in the photos make them more prominent than they usually appear. The sides have some light dings and scratches as well.

  • Mooer GE 250 vs Line 6 HX STOMP: which one to buy?

    16:39

In this video we will share a comparison between the Mooer GE 250 and the Line 6 HX STOMP. Actually, I hope that this video will be useful for guitarists, who maybe want to buy a new amp modeling and multi effects pedalboard and are unsure which one to choose. Let me say that both the pedalboards are good options, but maybe one of them has that extra feature that better suite your needs…So, the arguments we will discuss together are: the technical differences between the two pedalboards, in terms for instance of in/out, sampling frequency and so on and so forth…Then we will better listen to the sound differences, that you are already hearing in the demo song…Finally I will give you my 2 cents. I hope you enjoy and please don't forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell...it would be of a great help!!!

So where do you start in a section as massive as this ours? From acoustic to electric, nylon to steel stringed, hollow body to solid body, all styles are represented, so having a good idea of what you're looking for will definitely help. The best place to start is usually with the brand, as each one has a reputation for something different, allowing you to narrow things down from there. For example, you'll instantly recognize names like Fender, Gibson and Ibanez as trailblazers of the electric guitar, while others like Martin, Taylor, and Breedlove are more famous for the unparalleled quality of their acoustic instruments. After that, you'll want to look at things like body type, tonewood, strings, size, orientation and performance level. Once you have a general idea about each of these, your decision gets that much easier. Just remember, it all comes down to personal preference, so as long as you're happy with the guitar you choose you can't go wrong. The guitar is a special instrument, with a different meaning to every player. Whether you're taking your first steps into the world of music or you're a professional rocking out in front of sold out stadiums all over the planet, strumming, plucking and picking on a guitar is a way to express yourself that can't be duplicated with anything else. So pick up a guitar and start playing... you'll be glad you did.

Here it is... the FIRST Les Paul Reissue Made*** Why all the asterisks? Well... while the title of 'first' is true, Gibson also made a few reissues as special dealer orders and other 'half' reissues before this such as the Strings 'n Things, Standard 82/83, Heritage 80, Leo's LP, Les Paul KM, and Guitar Trader models. This is the first Les Paul Reissue that was not a custom order, but was being offered as a new line up called 'Les Paul Reissue.' This is actually from the 'pre-run' which used a vintage correct 9 xxxx serial number instead of the later 'first run' which followed a Y XXXX format with Y= the year the reissue was made - this format continued for nearly 10 years. (For example: 1983 being 3 xxxx.) Mark Knopfler of Dire Straights used #6 from this run of guitars on the Money for Nothing Album and still owns it today.

Not only is this guitar incredibly historically significant, but DANG - it's got the TONE and playability too. I definitely put this one in my top 5 LP I've ever owned category. I'll never forget this one. Gorgeous top on it too!

Well folks I'm at a stand still with this guitar, no truss, no adjustments whatsoever! No way to level frets and definitely needs fret work from being filed down before. Plastic neck aluminum fingerboard and waaay too much back bow! Any recommendations are welcomed!

    My Opinion:

This guitar is a beastly sounding monster indeed! Especially at it's low price point (In the US and UK anyway…)

I was expecting a whole lot of things to be wrong with this guitar when I received it, but was pleasantly surprised to find it needed a minimal amount of setting up, and zero modification to be a solid player.

Since a lot of people asked me what this guitar would be like for Nirvana-tone purposes, I thought I would indulge everyone with some sound clips.

In short, if you are on a budget it is hard to look past this guitar as an option if you want beastly tone in a small package, whether for Nirvana purposes or otherwise.

My main issue on this guitar is the body - it feels somehow even more diminutive than my CIJ mustangs and is considerably lighter, which for me personally makes the balance feel off with the neck. This problem may only be exclusive to me though as I am very used to the feel of Japanese Fender Mustangs.

Another more minor issue is the grub screws on the bridge - as expected of squier bridges they rattle. However this was an easy fix with the use of some loctite.

Apart from those issues (and perhaps some will find the tuners not very stable - to me they're fine), this guitar is rock solid! And will bite your face off with it's tone! Even the humbuckers sounded great! At the very least I expected to have to drop in some aftermarket 'buckers. But nope! I definitely didn't see any need to change them. Plenty of clarity and bite, minimal mud, and great tone with distortion!

The only other issue I see with this is exclusively for Australians (disregard if elsewhere). It's the price. $489 AUD is the expected price for these bad boys (if you can even find a store that stocks them - HAH!), which is far too much for what is meant to be the baseline model series for the squier range. I can't see this price justified here when it is cheaper to ship one from overseas. But anyway…

If you are Aussie and can't source one cheaper I recommend saving some pennies for a VM mustang or a Fender Duo-Sonic.

All in all this is simply a great guitar! Looks great, sounds great! 'Nuff said!

I used Nirvana's live tuning ('92 onward) for ease of tuning between the songs, so basically I used E Flat or Drop D Flat.
