  • How To Make Music With The Hungarian Minor Scale

    7:05

You may have noticed how most lessons on exotic scales for guitar just show you a couple of scale patterns and call it a day. While it's cool to know scale patterns, those are not enough for you to actually make music with the new scale you have learned.

Today we will take one of the most interesting exotic scales - the Hungarian Minor, also known as the Double Harmonic minor - and together we will see how to actually make music with it.

We will look at its chords and how to put them together and even how to use some of the most dissonant options to good effect.

In just a little more than 5 minutes from now you will be able to make music with the Hungarian Minor scale and create sounds that you have not used before.

  • National Anthem of Hungary: Himnusz

    2:12

Himnusz (English: Anthem) is the national anthem of Hungary. The words were written by Ferenc Kölcsey, a nationally renowned poet, in 1823, and its currently official musical setting was composed by the romantic composer Ferenc Erkel in 1844, although other less-known musical versions exist. The first stanza is sung at official ceremonies and as well in common. It was de facto used as hymn of the Kingdom of Hungary from its composition in 1844, and was officially adopted as national anthem of modern Hungary in 1989.

MAGYAR: A Hymnus, a’ Magyar nép zivataros századaiból (röviden, mai helyesírással Himnusz) Kölcsey Ferenc költeménye, amely Magyarország alaptörvénybe iktatott állami himnusza. A „Hymnus” a költő legnagyobb hatású verse, 1823-ban a nemzeti újjászületés hajnalán írta szatmárcsekei magányában.

  • Hungarian Folk Music of Moldavian Csángó People

    47:19

The Csango people are a Hungarian ethnographic group of Roman Catholic faith living mostly in the Romanian region of Moldavia, especially in Bacău County. Their traditional language, Csango, an old Hungarian dialect, is currently used by only a minority of the Csango population group. The ethnic Csángó Hungarians of Moldavia's Seret Valley have moved in large numbers to Budapest, and become a staple of the local folk scene with their distinctive instrumentation using flutes, fiddles, drums and the lute.

  • The BLUES-Exotic Scale: Hungarian Major

    6:24

Many guitar players never learn 'exotic' scales because they think they are not interested in their sound, or that they should learn the 'normal' scales first.

And yet 'exotic' scales are used commonly in music we all listen to. And they are not as hard as you think they are :)

Today we see a scale that can be used (or misused?) to sound like Blues... but can also sound exotic and middle-eastern. Welcome to the Hungarian Major scale, a scale that you will not regret learning whatever style you play.

(And yes, in this video you will learn how to actually make music with it!)

  • The MISSING Chord Of The Hungarian Minor Scale Music Theory

    6:46

    Complete Chord Mastery course:

Warning: this video is for music theory nerds (like me and many of you). It's going to be fun and interesting if you like theory. Don't click on it if you can not appreciate some sound exploration and chord nitpicking :)

So that is this all about?

Some time ago I published a video on the Hungarian minor scale ( and when we were finding out its chords, I said that there was no usable chord on the 4th degree of the scale.

    Boy, was I wrong...

...well, I was also partially right as we will see ;)

Turns out that there is not one, but several usable and interesting sounds that come from trying to build a chord on that degree of the scale. There is definitely some new sound for you to use - and given how delicious the Hungarian Minor scale sounds, I know that many of you will put these sounds to good use.

So I was wrong to not mention these sounds - and this video is my apology and correction!

  • Franz Liszt - Hungarian Fantasy (René Duchâble

    15:29

Franz Liszt (Hungarian Liszt Ferencz, in modern usage Liszt Ferenc ((October 22, 1811 – July 31, 1886) was a 19th-century Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, teacher and Franciscan tertiary.

Fantasie über ungarische Volksmelodien, S.123 (1849-52)
Based on the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 14, S. 244/14
    Dedication: Hans von Bülow (1830–1894)

François-René Duchâble and the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by James Conlon

    Description by Steven Coburn [-]
Liszt's single-movement concerto titled Hungarian Fantasia (1852) is in the same style and tradition as the composer's Hungarian Rhapsodies; in fact, the Fantasia is comprised mainly of material from the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 14, S. 244, slightly rearranged and augmented by an orchestral accompaniment. (Even though the Fantasia was published before the Rhapsody, it is likely the solo incarnation was written first; the exact compositional dates of the Rhapsodies are unclear.)

Structurally, the Fantasia differs from many of the Rhapsodies, which generally present a clear succession of three traditional Hungarian dances: the lassan, czifra, and friska. Although these dances are evident in the Fantasia, particularly in the long and brilliant friska section, much of the material is derived from the famous bold, marchlike theme of the first prominent forte passage. Liszt also treats a wide variety of material more freely in its combinations and juxtapositions than is usual for this type of work. Whether its large scale was the result of its orchestral expansion, or the inspiration for it, the result is one of Liszt's most popular and successful efforts.

  • Opening-Revue mit Måns Zelmerlöw & Petra Mede | Eurovision Song Contest

    4:27

Die Moderatoren Petra Mede und Måns Zelmerlöw erklären den ESC mal anders: in einer Musical-Perfomance, die sich sehen lassen kann. Ein gelungener Start ins zweite Halbfinale.

[Måns]: Well, it's a multinational competition
    With a collaborative mission
So much like the Olympics in a way
[Petra]: Sure, it's rather less athletic
    [Måns]: Though just as energetic
[Petra]: More colorful, and what's the word?
    [Måns (spoken)]: Theatrical?

[Petra]: We make music and friends with every nation
[Both]: And bankrupt the hosting TV station
[Måns]: To help to shore up a post-war Europe, in 1956, it all began
[Petra]: The set, I'm rather certain, was nothing but a curtain
There were only seven countries and one camera-man
[Måns]: But then it started growing now Australia's ours!
[Petra]: We're a big black hole sucking in all the stars!
[Both]: We'll take over the world and then conquer Mars!
    That's Eurovision!

[Petra]: It's an annual celebration of our culture
It's the highlight of our year
[Måns]: And a victory can catapult you
    Just look at my career!
    [Petra]: Yes, so we see..
You get to share the stage with me!
We're all excited, the fans united
    From Reykjavík, Riga and Rome
[Måns]: At Eurovision, there's no derision cause wherever you come from
    Here is home!

[Fan #1]: For loving Eurovision, I get bullied at school
[Fan #2]: But when we come together, I don't feel a fool!
[Fan #1]: Cause for one week a year, we're pretty cool!
    [Fan #1+2]: That's Eurovision!

[Petra]: Getting votes from your neighbours is a sure way to get your song disgraced
[Måns]: But when Sweden gets 12 points from Norway, it's clearly just good taste
[Petra]: That gimmicky factor, the wacky, the weird
Céline on a tractor, Conchita's beard
Pirates and penguins and puppets on strings
These are a few of my favourite things!

The singers come together like songbirds of a feather
For victory they hope and pray and beg
[Måns]: Wait there in the green room, an often rather mean room, wishing all of our competitors break a leg
[Petra]: The impact of the show I cannot overstate
[Måns]: No matter where you go, it's a source of debate
[All]: But it's something you either love or hate
    That's Eurovision!

[Petra]: And the interval act is your one big chance
To fail to live up to Riverdance!

Where else can you hear Romansh and Luxembourgish sung?
We've had two songs with sign language and three in made-up tongue
And Antillean Creole, Norwegian, Võro, Viennese
Neopolitan, Catalan, Udmurt, Montenegrin and Maltese
[Måns]: Ancient Greek, Albanian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romani, Russian, Romanian
Crimean, Slovenian, Hebrew, Armenian, Arabic and Lithuanian
[Petra]: Portuguese, Macedonian, Breton, Estonian, Pontic, Icelandic, Croatian, Bulgarian, Georgian, Italian, Bosnian, Latvian, Corsican, Serbian, German, Hungarian
[Both]: Polish and English and Irish and Finnish and Swedish and Spanish and Dutch
Samogitian and Turkish and Danish and French
[Petra]: Tahitian, though not very much!
[Måns]: And though I don't know Czech, Swahili, Azeri or Greek
[All]: Music is a language that we all know how to speak

    That's Eurovision!
    It's your decision
Though not taking part is a crime
    [Måns]: Douze points or zero
You'll be a hero of our time!
[All]: In the Eurovision family, we do it 'glitz and glamour-ly'
Cause rich in kitsch and hammily is best!
    This is My-rovision
    And His-rovision
    And Her-rovision
    And Your-rovision
    Bienvenue, välkomna, be our guest!
    At the Eurovision Song Contest!

    3:15

An instrumental track of Budapest 1988 and Hungarian Folk Song from the Broadway version of Chess, music written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, lyrics by Tim Rice, book by Richard Nelson. Trevor Nunn directed the original production, which starred Judy Kuhn, David Carroll, and Philip Casnoff. The music was orchestrated by Anders Eljas. The playoff to this song is appended at the end of the track.

The second half of Hungarian Folk Song is in the score sung a cappella, but due to practicalities of compiling the instrumentals I elected to include a special string arrangement of the a cappella half to bridge the gap between Budapest 1988 and Hungarian Playoff. The file versions of these instrumentals do not include the added string parts.
