How To Make Music With The Hungarian Minor Scale

    7:05

You may have noticed how most lessons on exotic scales for guitar just show you a couple of scale patterns and call it a day. While it's cool to know scale patterns, those are not enough for you to actually make music with the new scale you have learned.

Today we will take one of the most interesting exotic scales - the Hungarian Minor, also known as the Double Harmonic minor - and together we will see how to actually make music with it.

We will look at its chords and how to put them together and even how to use some of the most dissonant options to good effect.

In just a little more than 5 minutes from now you will be able to make music with the Hungarian Minor scale and create sounds that you have not used before.

What is Swing? Swing Explained in 2 Minutes

    2:01

    Hi there!

I'm (finally!) back with a new music theory related video explaining what is swing, a form of popular music developed in the United States that dominated in the 1930s and 1940s. The amazing danceable swing style of big bands and bandleaders such as Benny Goodman was the dominant form of American popular music from 1935 to 1946, a period known as the swing era.

You will recognize In the Mood, a popular big band-era #1 hit recorded by American bandleader Glenn Miller. It topped the charts for 13 straight weeks in 1940 in the U.S. In 1999, National Public Radio (NPR) included the song recording on RCA Bluebird on the NPR 100, the list of The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century. Then in 2004, the original song recording on RCA Victor was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry which consists of recordings that are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Hopefully I made it clear, understandable but, above all, fun! :)

    Enjoy!

    Beyond The Forest

    52:42

Documentary about Hungarian Music in Transylvania

Written and Directed by Esther Ronay

Captures a fragile moment in time, less than a year after the Romanian revolution of December '89, when the borders between Hungary and Romania opened up. Over the last twenty years young people have travelled from Hungary to Transylvania in search of their cultural roots. The risks were great as the secret police punished both villagers and visitors. Learning from the gypsies and the peasants they took the music back to the cities of Hungary to create dance houses on the village model.

For 20 years this Dance House movement has provided an alternative to the disco for the young people of Budapest and for years acted as a focus of opposition to the Communist regime. Two prominent Hungarian musicians, Marta Sebestyen and Bela Halmos, travel from Budapest to Transylvania, which translated means beyond the forest, where they participate in the traditional musical events which form part of everyday village life. Despite the poverty and devastation of modern Romania the Transylvanian villages are islands of colourful costume, music and dance.

Here the peasant culture of Romanians and Hungarians remains untouched but who knows how long the village communities can maintain their cultural integrity.

Locrian Mode - Explained Once And For All

    9:29

Get the complete locrian mode lesson in the url above.

Also, to check out our complete 82 jazz improvisation solution check out this epic course right here

Would you like to learn more about the locrian mode? This video will help. In today's tutorial I break down the theory, construction, and improv tips to help you add the locrian scale into your bag of tricks.

The first thing to keep in mind when learning this mode is that it's the 7th mode of the major scale. This is usually where people start when learning more about modes. But, often times people will do a weird shortcut in their brain where if they're playing B locrian mode they often times just think C major scale. The problem that comes in with this method of thought is you end up playing lines that don't really sound great over half diminished chords.

It's best to think of locrian as it's own entity in itself.

In terms of music theory, I like to use this scale over half diminished chords and even dominant chords from time to time. The dominant chord technique is a bit more advanced though. We cover that in all my improvisation courses.

Here's another scale theory way of looking at the locrian scale
    1 – b2 – b3 – 4 – b5 – b6 – b7

How To Write Chord Progressions With NEGATIVE HARMONY Simple Explanation

    12:19

Negative Harmony is a very simple concept that has been made unnecessarily complex.

You may have heard about Negative Harmony (after all, it was all the rage on YouTube a while ago) and maybe you tried to understand it.

But for all the talk about it, there are still very few resources that actually explain it! Most people came away with the idea that Negative Harmony is an abstract or brainy concept reserved to geniuses.

In reality, everybody can use Negative Harmony in their music - it's not difficult to do as long as you can play a few chords on your guitar. You can find everything else in the video below.

In this video you will learn what Negative Harmony is, how it works, and how you can use it in your music. I play plenty of examples so you can hear how it sounds, and see how to use it in practice.

By the time you get to the end of the video you will be able to apply Negative Harmony to create new chord progressions that sound great

Music Theory 101 - Complex Music Terms Explained

    9:09

Advanced Music Theory -Dodecaphonic, Octatonic and X-Y and Z Cells

In this episode we explore more advanced concepts of scales, pitch cells and 12 Tone Rows. I discuss terms and concepts to know for the contemporary composer. Some of these concepts were created as a way for people to analyze the developing music of the time. As Atonality and Serial Music was flourishing in the early 20th century, theorists needed to come up with new terms to explain these new composition techniques. While I prefer many of the jazz terms or nomenclature for some of these concepts, it's important to also know the appropriate terminology used by contemporary music theorists.

    Terms Discussed:

    Diatonic
    Pentatonic
    Hexatonic
    Octatonic
    Dodecaphonic
    Tetrachord
    X-cell
    Y-cell
    Z-cell

Exotic Scales and Modes - Harmonic, Neapolitan Major & Minor, Hungarian & Enigmatic

    13:33

My 3rd piano lesson video. I know the text goes by WAY too fast sometimes, but this is definitely not meant to be all absorbed in one sitting, as I tried to pack as much information as possible in under 15 minutes.

I recommend either just watching and enjoying the music, or if you want to actually study the material, it would really help to pause the video when needed to take in all the information.

I only recently first heard about some of these scales, such as the Neapolitan Major and Minor, and since there are practically no videos online of people actually describing them and putting them into context, I thought doing a video like this would help a little to fill that void.

I learn SO much in the process of making these lesson videos, I really hope someone out there learns something too!

I love you all, thanks so much for watching, and remember to always be happy, love being alive, and Enjoy Yourself Everyday!!
