    About the Talk

Let’s Understand Why PlantBased Living Foods such as
Oxygenated Foods are needed for the Brain

With so much emphasis being put on physical health and wellbeing, we sometimes forget that our brain, just like every other part of our body, also requires optimal nutrients to thrive.

Keeping the brain sharp and focused, improving memory, maintaining vitality and functionality – all of these aspects are deeply affected by our chosen nutrients. From a PlantBased Living Foods perspective it is all about Creating Healthy Habits by Adding to One's Lifestyle, One Step at a Time with Guidance and Understanding, and so at our own pace we can achieve improved health and wellbeing.

    SUMMARY:
    --------------------

Rhonda’s Wild Idea: To combine her love of research and science into a podcast and site where she helps educate people about health and wellbeing practices.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is a key component to living wildly. That’s why I’m so excited to have on Dr. Rhonda Patrick. You may have heard her on The Joe Rogan Experience, The Tim Ferriss Show, or on her own podcast, Found My Fitness. She’s done research on and has interviewed some of the top scientists in their field about things like breath work, sauna, training, fasting, and more.

Rhonda and I actually know each other from teaching surfing together at the Surf Diva Surf School in our early twenties. We reconnected a year ago when I was researching a story about Wim Hof for Outside Magazine, who she’s spent some time with. I love how she takes complex scientific studies and puts them into plain English so more people (like myself) can understand them.

On this show, we talk about everything from health hacks to increase performance on the road or trail, how she got the wild idea to create her own site full of health and science information instead of going the traditional tenure track and working at a university, and how she got the attention of people like Joe Rogan and Tim Ferriss.

    Presented by REI

    Listen to this episode if:
You love trying new health hacks.
You’ve thought about using a sauna.
    You’re intrigued by time-restricted eating and/or fasting.

You want to pave your own career path in health or science.

    SCRIPT
Let’s imagine this paper bowl is a brain… a green brain!

We’re going to learn how your brain actually creates your thoughts, your memories, your feelings and your actions.

Now this needs to dry and Bruno needs a walk.

Now that our brain is dry, we’re going to divide it in half to create our left-brain and our right brain.

Once we’ve done that we can fill our brain with neurons.

If you didn’t have any neurons, you wouldn’t have any thoughts. You wouldn’t have any feelings or memories. And you wouldn’t have any actions.

On average, the human brain has 86bn neurons.

Once our neurons are dry we can remove the tape.

Now we need to connect our neurons so they can send important signals to each other.

Our brains have trillions of connections.

Neurons use their connections to send signals that can turn each other on or off, just like a light bulb. This is called firing.

Your neurons are firing all the time, even when you’re asleep.

But your neurons don’t just fire at random. They fire in unique patterns. And these patterns are what creates your thoughts, your memories, your feelings and your actions.

I’m going to make four thought bubbles: one for thoughts, one for memories, one for feelings and one for actions: all created by your neurons firing in special patterns.

I wonder if our brain can tell us what Bruno’s thinking.

    Thank you, Bruno.

    Look at that wiggly tail.

    Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. He wrote more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: Posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years.

  • Ian Robertson - The Winner Effect at Science Gallery

    1:1:29

At Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, Profesor Ian Robertson talks about his new book, The Winner Effect.

The Winner Effect investigates what makes a winner, why some succeed in life and business, whereas others fail, and why few individuals become supremely powerful, while many remain powerless. Through scientific and psychological analysis, Ian Robertson shows how success affects the inner workings of the brain and explores the implications for this on individuals -- in business, on the public stage and in family life.

'The winner effect' is a term used in biology to describe how an animal that has won a few fights against weak opponents is much more likely to win later bouts against stronger contenders. As Ian Robertson reveals, it applies to humans, too: achievement changes the chemistry of the brain making people more focused, smarter, more confident and more aggressive. The effect is as strong as a drug, and the more an individual wins, the more they will go on to win. In fact, winning can become physically addictive.

By understanding what the mental and physical changes are that take place in the brain of a 'winner', how they happen, and why they affect some people more than others, Ian Robertson shows why some people attain and handle success better than others. He explains what makes a winner -- and a loser -- and how knowing this can help to understand better the behaviour of one's colleagues, employees, family, and friends.

For those interested in the rise to pre-eminence of figures like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, The Winner Effect is invaluable. At a time when entrepreneurship is so fascinating to many, the book sheds new light on the physiological and psychological causes for rising to the top. For readers interested in science, education, business, politics and psychology this is a definitive book for a 'go-getting' age.

Newsworthy angles presented by Ian Robertson include the conclusion that had there been more women in boardrooms, it might have prevented risk-taking, such as that which occurred at corporations like Enron. Individual case studies featured in the book include: Picasso, Caravaggio, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Frank Bruno, Mike Tyson, Enron, Fred Goodwin, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

    About Ian Robertson

A neuroscientist and trained clinical psychologist, Ian Robertson is an international expert on neuropsychology. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin, and formerly Fellow of Hughes Hall, Cambridge. Ian holds visiting professorships at the University of Toronto, University College London, and the University of Wales. Ian is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and has published over 250 scientific articles in leading journals. He is also author and editor of ten scientific books, including the leading international textbook on cognitive rehabilitation (Cognitive Neurorehabilitation), and three books for the general reader (Mind Sculpture: Unleashing Your Brain's Potential; The Mind's Eye: The Essential Guide to Boosting Your Mental; Emotional and Physical Powers, and Stay Sharp with the Mind Doctor: Practical Strategies to Boost Your Brain Power). Ian is a regular keynote speaker at conferences on brain function throughout the world.

  • “Gastrophysics” by Charles Spence. How to eat less enjoying food more.

    9:15

I’ve read this fascinating book this week,

“Gastrophysics. The new science of eating.” by Charles Spence, the head of Crossmodal Research Laboratory at the University of Oxford.

“The scientist changing the way we eat”

    ~ The Guardian

    Sounds like a science book?

And it is, but science book about a subject, that we all care about, that we all practice, without too much thinking or self-analysis.

    Eating.

We all do it every day. We must be good at it. And we all must know, what it is, how we do it, how it’s done properly, and what exactly influences our eating habits and behaviors.

But as with many things in life, just because we do something often, doesn’t mean, we are great at it and understand it completely.

The book is all about, how we taste (Your tongue is not the main “tasting tool” in your arsenal of senses!), what affects our taste (like the weight of our fork, for example, or the chair we sit in, or what we hear while eating), what affects our appetite and how full we feel eating certain foods and in certain environments, the music or noise we hear makes a difference - how fast we eat and how much, how much we enjoy our food. It’s not all about the taste, in fact, taste is probably one of the smallest insignificant parts of eating experience, that makes us like or dislike our food. It has to do with what we know about food, the color, who and where made it. And, did you know, that your “food memory” is so unreliable! What defines, whether you remember a certain meal or not, is not at all the taste, but the beginning of your meal, the first bite, the surprise, the novelty, and how your whole experience (greeting at the restaurant, for example) started, and how it ended. The main course between your appetizer and your dessert might actually mean the least, even though it is where the bulk of the calories you consume is, and where chef invests most of his efforts (Unless, of course, the chef knows, what truly memorable “meal experience” is all about)

The book is fascinating! I thought I knew what food is eating is all about!

You might read it, if you are just curious, if you want to improve your eating habits, get healthier and lose weight, hacking your brain and actually knowing, HOW to eat to make your brain your ally, not your enemy.

You might read it to enjoy your meals more and know, why you enjoy certain meals and places to eat.

You might read it out of pure curiosity – after all, you do eat quite often, might as well educate yourself about one of the most essential human behaviors.

For the purpose of adding value to your day without too much reading, I’ll give you a few hacks from the book to help you eat healthier, eating less, enjoying more, losing and maintaining weight easier.

  • Snacking Does NOT Give You Energy | Burn Fat, Not Sugar

    1:16

I know it may seem like eating food gives you energy, but I want you to consider the massive amounts of energy and resources it takes to chew, digest, and assimilate food.

Additionally, your body redirects blood flow away from your brain, and to your digestive system. This means your presentation or project you are working on doesn't get your full attention.

A standard American diet of 800 calories takes about 12 hours to digest. This means for that entire duration, the body is limited on it's energy resources because it's dealing with that meal.

This goes for snacking too. Even the healthiest snacks need to be dealt with.

The number one reason most people need to snack is because they are pure sugar burners. They've taught their body to run on a glucose hit every 2-3 hours. This is the fastest way to age yourself.

The goal is to become metabolically flexible. Your cells can only choose two things for fuel, sugar or fat. You want to make fat the preferred fuel source.

How do you do this? You want to re-program your genes. This can be done by eating more healthy fats, less carbohydrates, and stop snacking!

Do this for 14-21 days, then you can implement a specific fasting protocol.

I can help you burn fat instead of sugar. Join my Shredfat Mastermind so we can work together:

    MIND HUB BENEFITS:

► INCREASED LEVELS OF POSITIVE HORMONES

Many studies show that listening to soothing sounds and relaxing music increases the levels of serotonin and other positive hormones in our bodies. Serotonin is a hormone regarded by many experts as the “happy” neurotransmitter, providing us with better mood, sleep and learning capabilities.

    ► REDUCED LEVELS OF STRESS

Frequent listening to relaxing music can help us disconnect from everyday stress. This reduction in stress can better cognitive processing and improvement in memory. Stress affects our sleep and our bodies need sleep in order to function properly. Listening to relaxing music, together with breathing or meditating right before going to bed, is a great way to disconnect from your busy day and welcome the serenity and peace of the night.

    ► IMPROVED BRAIN FUNCTION

What is remarkable, is that while simply listening to music, researchers have discovered that areas of the brain light up contributing to better interconnection between both our hemispheres, which also results in dendritic growth, thus giving us faster and smoother communication within the neurons of the brain.

    ► LOWER HEART RATE

Listening to calming music regularly can help lower your blood pressure and your heart rate. A lower heart rate will render a calmer self and can give us inner peace to focus and achieve our goals more easily.

    ► ENHANCED PLEASURE EXPERIENCES

Dopamine is a powerful neurotransmitter that is closely related to our emotions, movements and sensations of pleasure. Listening to soothing and relaxing music produces a pleasant sensation in our brains, contributing to experiences as pleasurable as eating food or making love.

Pure Clean Positive Energy Vibration Meditation Music, Healing Music, Relax Mind Body & Soul

    Positive Energy
In a spiritual sense, we believe that we radiate an energy field or aura around us that others might feel. This energy field or aura is what will attract people to us. When you have an energy field or aura of positive energy, you can release an aura of peace and calm and other positive feelings. With this aura, we can inspire, motivate and drive the people around us to be this way. If you give out too much negative energy, you can repel close friends and family and maybe attract the wrong company to your circle. Negative energy would include being tensed most times, being full of anger and anxiety.

  • 081. Urolithin A from Pomegranate for Brain Health. Podcast with Dr. Julie Andersen

    33:38

In this episode of humanOS Radio, I speak with Julie Andersen. Julie has a Ph.D in neurobiological chemistry from UCLA, and subsequently did her post-doctoral fellowship in the department of neurology at Harvard.

Presently, she is a professor and researcher at the Buck Institute, an independent biomedical research institute that is dedicated to investigating aging and age-related disease. Her lab is working on identifying novel therapeutics to delay or prevent the age-related molecular processes that drive neurodegenerative diseases. For example, she and other researchers at the Buck have been investigating compounds that could clear out senescent cells, which have been linked to age-related functional decline, as we have discussed previously on several shows.

Recently, Julie and her colleagues received a grant from the NIH to examine a natural bioactive known as urolithin A. Urolithin A does not come directly from the diet - it is actually a metabolite that results from the biotransformation of ellagitannins and ellagic acid via the gut microbiota. These phenolic compounds are found abundantly in edible plants, most notably in pomegranate, walnuts, berries, tea, and fruit juices (as well as certain types of wine).

In animal models of aging, urolithin A has shown great promise. Older mice that were given the compound exhibited a 42% improvement in endurance while running, compared to control rodents of the same age. And nematodes that were exposed to urolithin A experienced a 45% boost in lifespan. And the first clinical trials in elderly human subjects suggest that the compound is safe and effective for reversing age-related muscle decline.

So what makes urolithin A so powerful? It appears to enhance autophagy, the natural mechanism through which cells effectively cleanse themselves by removing dysfunctional proteins and cellular components. This property makes it an enticing therapeutic compound for addressing neurodegenerative disease. One of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease is the accumulation of irreparably misfolded proteins in the brain. It is thought that deregulation of the autophagy pathway with age leads to reduced clearance of these broken proteins, which in turn leads to the formation of toxic aggregates that are typically found in deceased patients.

Unfortunately, the capacity to generate urolithin A also appears to decline with age. To that end, Julie and her team plan to try to rejuvenate the gut microbiota of older mice using targeted probiotics, which should enhance production of urolithin A. They will then track neuropathology, memory loss, and mortality in a rodent model of Alzheimer’s disease, and compare outcomes in mice treated with urolithin A and controls.
