The major characteristics of life include birth, growth, movement, awareness, adaptation and death. And ever since she emerged on the scene in 2003, Hiromi has been one of the most profound and prolific living forces in 21st century music. Mentored by the legendary Ahmad Jamal, the Japanese pianist/composer has created music that grows with every performance, moves easily beyond stylistic genres, exhibits an awareness of the entire jazz tradition and adapts to the contributions of her fellow bandmates.

So it's only apropos that her latest recording, set for release on June 17, 2014, via Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, is entitled Alive.

Her ninth CD as a leader, Alive, heralds the return of Hiromi's Trio Project, featuring contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Michel Camilo, The O'Jays and Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour and Jack Bruce). This terrific triad, which DownBeat magazine proclaimed as one of the most exciting groups working in any genre today, first formed in 2011 and recorded their first CD, Voice, that year, followed by Move in 2013. On Alive, Phillips' powerful, yet poetic percussion and Jackson's flowing, glow-in-the-dark basslines beautifully buoy and support Hiromi's ingenious and impassioned improvisations. Her evocative and expansive compositions evoke the myriad moods and mysteries of life and reveal the soulful, syncopated simpatico of her thrilling threesome.

Alive has a double meaning for me, Hiromi says. I wanted to write songs that deal with things and emotions that we encounter in life. But the word Alive can also mean 'played live.' I've been performing with Simon and Anthony for four years. We've made three records together, and we've done so many live shows as a trio. We have a great time being adventurous, and I felt that we can make the record sound like a live recording in front of the audience.

That's the great thing about having a working trio: We understand how to make each other shine. Anthony is an amazing improviser. He composes incredible counter-lines when I solo, and he always plays something to make [the music] shine even more. And Simon has an amazing tone and a beautiful sound on the drums; he's like an orchestra. They can play anything, and they understand so many different genres of music. They have no boundaries. It's been a great journey with this group.

Az idén harminchat éves japán zongoraművésznő káprázatos technikai virtuozitással és kifogyhatatlan energiával veti bele magát abba a maga teremtette életteli zenei világba, mely a jazz-ben gyökerezik, és továbbszárnyal a progresszív zene felé.

    Hiromi on Facebook:

COMPOSER/PIANIST HIROMI TRANSCENDS JAZZ WITH A SOUNDTRACK FOR A DAY

Move features contra-bass guitarist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips

On her 2011 album, Voice, Hiromi sought to capture people's inner voices and strove to create what she called a three-dimensional sound. For that album, the Japanese composer/pianist assembled a trio that included herself and two veteran players -- contra-bass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, The O'Jays, Steely Dan, Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour, Jack Bruce). While Hiromi had played with Jackson prior to recording Voice, she had never recorded an entire album with either him or Phillips.

I had such a great time recording with them, and we went on the road together and that was even more fun, she says. As soon as we started playing live shows, we grew up as a band. It was the biggest fun I've ever had in my life musically. That's why I wanted to do another record. I couldn't let it go. I wanted to do it again.

While on the road, Hiromi started writing music for a follow-up, Move, set for U.S. release March 5, 2013 on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group. (European release date is October 2, 2012.) Because I had been playing with Anthony and Simon for quite a bit, I just started to understand their characteristics, and I could find a hidden gem in their playing, she explains. As a composer, I really wanted to write the songs especially for them, and I wanted to extract the unique beauty of their playing.

PIANIST/COMPOSER HIROMI TRACES THE SPARK OF INSPIRATION ON STUNNING NEW RELEASE

Hiromi’s 10th album features the return of The Trio Project with contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips

All great human passions – whether romantic, creative, inventive, or transformative – begin with a single spark. On her tenth album as a leader, Japanese pianist/composer Hiromi traces the path of the flame ignited by that spark as it consumes and inspires. Over the course of nine expressively charged songs, the listener is carried away on an impassioned spiritual journey that might tell the story of a personal discovery, a love affair, or the creation of the music itself.

Set for release April 1st, 2016 on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, Spark showcases the always thrilling sound of Hiromi’s Trio Project with her most narratively sweeping and emotionally overflowing set of music to date. The pianist finds her own spark in her interaction with her triomates of the last five years, contrabass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Chick Corea, The O’Jays) and drummer Simon Phillips (The Who, David Gilmour, Judas Priest, Toto, Jack Bruce).

Since forming in 2010, The Trio Project has explored the richness of the inner voice on their 2011 debut, Voice; the dynamic, unceasing motion of time on their 2013 follow-up, Move; and captured the feeling of their electrifying live performances on 2014’s brilliant Alive. With Spark, the trio again exemplifies why DownBeat magazine has called them “one of the most exciting groups working in any genre today,” with the leader’s effusive, heartfelt virtuosity supported by Jackson’s vigorously fluid basslines and Phillips’ ability to be simultaneously propulsive and witty behind the kit.

    5:44

Pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara, whose passionate and incendiary keyboard work has been a shining light on the jazz landscape since her 2003 debut, believes that the voice that never speaks can sometimes be the most powerful of all.

Her newest release, a nine-song trio recording simply titled Voice, expresses a range of human emotions without the aid of a single lyric.

When I play music, I realize that it really filters emotions, says Hiromi. I called this album Voice because I believe that people's real voices are expressed in their emotions. It's not something that you really say. It's more something that you have in your heart. Maybe it's something you haven't said yet. Maybe you're never going to say it. But it's your true voice. Instrumental music is very similar. We don't have any words or any lyrics to go with it. It's the true voice that we don't really put into words, but we feel it when it's real.

This is a bass guitar demonstration of Hiromi Uehara's tune Warrior from her album Alive! Demonstrated by Jeff Mack, bassist for Scarlet Hollow. Hiromi is a musical genius and Anthony Jackson is a monster on the contrabass guitar. Along with the incredible Simon Phillips on drums this trio is high caliber musicianship that makes beautiful music together.
The tune changes time signatures so fluidity. It begins in 4/4 time then changes from 9/16 to 12/16 to 15/16 to an engaging 6/8 feel. Anthony Jackson is the king of precision, time, groove, feel and soloing. Quite possibly the best electric bassist on earth.
Please purchase music from Hiromi Uehara and support this wonderful music and art form.
