About the Drum & Piano project

What could be more of a musical contrast than a virtuoso classical pianist and a rock drummer? Ordinarily, people expect the pianist to be precise and disciplined, dressed formally in a tuxedo and playing in prestigious concert halls - and the rock drummer to be wild and loud, in t-shirt and torn jeans, playing in downtown venues. Two worlds that never connect.

Yet put them together and what do we get? In this case, an exciting chain reaction as one musical personality bounces off another. HAVASI, the conservatoire-trained classical pianist, and Endi, drummer with the rock band ‘Hooligans’ now appear together on the same stage - united in a shared desire to make great music across barriers of genre. Their performance is both a collaboration and a duel - a spellbinding clash that creates musical sparks while also revealing the unexpected: the delicacy of the drum kit, the percussive power of the piano.

In this exciting meeting of musical minds and hearts something extraordinary is produced. For a moment a beautiful melody floats above a hard drum beat, then gentle cymbal strokes mix with percussive piano riffs. Energy and sheer power fuse with subtlety and sophistication to create a moving and dramatic musical experience.

Add to this a striking visual element and the result is first rate quality entertainment with real passion and heart. ‘Drum and Piano’ is a thrilling and innovative performance offering something wholly unexpected.

Classical pianist vs. rock drummer with beautiful imagery of Budapest, Hungary. A duel or cooperation? Against each other or attuned?

There is a point in all approaches, and this bold experiment, based on the friendship of the two guys, has by now become a brilliant success. While at first sight it may be striking to see both guys together, their approach to music is nearly the same and the difference between them is merely apparent.

It is unprecedented to have an entire musical album protagonised by the classical piano and the rock drum, each a heavy-weight instrument which has excelled in two widely different genres.

After almost two years of preparation, ENDI and HAVASI brought out a professional studio album to prove that even in Hungary you can create a kind of music which comes as a surprise to the whole world. You can produce something which is not an imitation. All you need is an original idea and two unique characters.

    ---

One man from the academy, who became a virtuoso.
And another from the street, who became a rock star.
A composer who goes beyond the rules,
And a drummer who breaks them.
Two men - two different worlds.
They should never appear on the same stage.
They should never even have met.
But their hearts beat to the same rhythm.
And now They're making their own rules!

  • HAVASI — Rise of the Instruments

    3:08

Virtuosity means masterly perfection, the highest degree of artistic skills. It is a special state where the artist overcomes technical difficulties without extra effort to fully indulge in the joy of music making.

At Haydn's concerts, barriers were set up to control the frantic crowd.

But live instruments have fallen into the background by the 21st century.

At the same time, there are three artists who feel a burning desire to prove that classical music has not lost anything from its power and that classical instruments have a place in today's mainstream musical world.

This is the Rise of the Instruments.

  • HAVASI — The Storm

    5:23

“When the storm breaks, each man acts in accordance with his own nature. Some are dumb with terror, some flee, some hide. And some spread their wings like eagles and soar on the wind.”

Composers can rarely describe their inner-most thoughts and feelings in words. However, the quote above beautifully matches up with what HAVASI had in his mind when he wrote 'The Storm'.

'The Storm' has become the most loved of HAVASI’s compositions. Whether it is performed in a solo piano concert or a huge arena show, it is always a highlight, richly applauded by the audience.

  • HAVASI — The Storm ft. Lisa Gerrard

    2:58

Lisa Gerrard performs in The Storm at the HAVASI Symphonic Arena Show in Budapest, 2013.

The Australian singer, musician and composer became a world star as a member of the band Dead Can Dance. For the soundtrack of Gladiator, co-produced with Hans Zimmer, she was nominated for an Oscar and received the Golden Globe. Her characteristic, incomparable, painfully magnificent contralto voice is often heard in the biggest box-office hits of Hollywood. In addition to Gladiator, her own compositions were performed in a number of films, including Baraka, Heat, Mission Impossible II, Man on Fire and The Insider.

  • HAVASI — The Christ Trilogy 2013

    4:12

The 'Brush & Piano' part is an extraordinary encounter of fine arts and music at the HAVASI Symphonic shows. A wonderful musical and visual treat in which HAVASI performs his original compositions inspired by and reflecting the beautiful and powerful paintings of the great Hungarian artist Mihály Munkácsy. The paintings are projected on to a special 300 square metre needle sharp backstage screen within a picture frame behind the assembled musicians.

    The Christ Trilogy

Mihály Munkácsy undoubtedly reached the pinnacle of his career with The Christ Trilogy, even though the three paintings were only exhibited for the first time together almost 100 years after his death.

Despite the religious nature of Munkácsy's Christ paintings, it would be difficult to imagine them as altarpieces, and instead they should be considered as socio-cultural genre compositions. The public was mesmerized by the enormous size, the hype surrounding their exhibition and the nature of the biblical events depicted.

  • HAVASI — Ad Martem 2013

    5:57

In this gripping composition, HAVASI sets to music a striking Latin poem Ad Martem, precatio pro pace (To Mars, a prayer for peace) by the late mediaeval poet Janus Pannonius. Pannonius was the earliest of the great Hungarian poets, writing in the land that was the first to receive the cultural fruits of the Renaissance from Italy.

The poem begins by describing the ferocity of Mars, the classical war god, and the awful devastation that he trails in his wake, and finally implores this deity of bloody conflict to spare the Pannonians, the ancient name given to the people who live in Hungary and surrounding lands.

The music perfectly captures both the fearful mood of menacing aggression and the gentle mood of prayerful supplication, with powerful positive energy triumphing in the end.

    About Voices of Change

During our lives, we keep developing by the things we go through. We continuously learn from each other, the influences that affect us and of course from our own actions. Some change through religion, others by helping people and yet others by the positive force of music. What matters is positive change itself, not the way you achieve it. In addition, Voices Of Change says while we were born in different continents, we speak the same language deep in our hearts. And that common language is the language of music.

  • HAVASI — Spring Wind | Cultural Bridge Symphony

    4:56

Music is a bridge between cultures and worlds. A form of communication which can bring us closer to each other. It doesn't matter if we were born in different continents, we speak the same language deep in our hearts - the language of music.

    Lyrics

The spring wind blows the waters,
    my flower, my flower.

Every bird searches for a partner,
    my flower, my flower.

And I whom should I choose,
    my flower, my flower?

I choose you, and you choose me,
    my flower, my flower.

(In Hungarian 'my flower' is often used as a diminutive to convey intimacy and endearment. We would refer to our loved ones as 'my flower' in a similar fashion as 'my honey' is used in English. In the beautiful folk song the expression 'my flower' is especially nice as it refers to a loved person while it also pictures the awakening of nature at the same time.)

    The original Hungarian lyrics:

    Tavaszi szél vizet áraszt,
    virágom, virágom.

    Minden madár társat választ,
    virágom, virágom.

    Hát én immár kit válasszak,
    virágom, virágom?

    Te engemet s én tégedet,
    virágom virágom.

  • Havasi - Lacrimosa

    4:17

Havasi is a Hungarian pianist and composer of contemporary classical music. Lacrimosa is his first composition that I encountered and it immediately won my heart. It was the most wonderful piece of music I had heard in a long time. I'm speaking about the full orchestral version with a huge choir, haunting solo vocals, and epic taiko and rock drums. These are in fact the three elements that make Havasi's compositions so different from other classical compositions.

After I had listened to almost all of Havasi's music, Lacrimosa remained my favorite one and I really craved to be able to play at least the piano part myself. The product of many hours of painstaking transcription of the music was sheet music I could learn to play the piece from. Later, when I attended Havasi's concert (featuring over 150 artists) in Budapest, hearing Lacrimosa live created most likely the most intense emotions in my life.

Unsurprisingly, I have enjoyed playing this piece the most (among those I can play on the piano) for a couple of months now, so I decided to share my performance with you, hoping it will bring up at least a sample of the emotions I experienced at the concert. Don't forget to watch the original orchestral version too; but please, do so after you've watched my piano performance.. :)

Consider my piano performance a tribute to the wonderful art Havasi has been creating for about a decade now and a demonstration of my love for this piece in particular. Thank you for reading this far, you're amazing! ;)

Enjoy the music and live with passion!
