    Hello friends,
Welcome back to Swiftlessons for another mini-lead guitar lesson. One of my goals for 2020 is to develop a proficiency at playing gypsy jazz, and to share what I learn along the way. In today's lesson I'll break down an easy way of playing over a common 5-1 chord change in the key of A minor. This technique is perfect for soloing on Django Reinhardt's Minor Swing. Hello friends,
And welcome to another lick of the week tutorial. In today's lesson I'll be breaking down a beautiful gypsy jazz style lick taken from the Midnight in Paris theme song Bistro Fada by Stephane Wrembel. In the interest of expanding your repertoire of licks, and your understanding of guitar leads are composed, I highly recommend that you regularly take ideas from other players, while considering the chords these phrases are being played over, and the scales and arpeggios being utilized. • Stéphane Wrembel - Shapes For Improvisation

    7:11

Excerpt from In The Style Of Stéphane Wrembel

Check out In The Style Of Stéphane Wrembel lesson series:

Stéphane explains his approach to improvisation using chord shapes.

New York Observer recently said, Stephane Wrembel represents the living face of Gypsy jazz. Rolling Stone Magazine has called him “a revelation”.

Stephane Wrembel is best known for “Bistro Fada,” the theme song from the 2011 Woody Allen Oscar winning film, Midnight In Paris. Subsequently, Wrembel was hand-selected by award winning composer/producer Hans Zimmer to perform at the 2012 Academy Awards® as part of his “All Star Band.” Later that year, Midnight in Paris won a Grammy Award for “Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media”. Wrembel has contributed music to two other Allen films, a variety of commercials, and even helped Gentleman Shaver win a Clio Award for “Best Original Song Used in a Commercial”. He has toured around the world, and is very active on the musical scene in many countries including USA, Canada, France, Israel and India. Recently, Stephane has performed as a headliner at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Festival Django Reinhardt in France.

Wrembel has also headlined at Lincoln Center, played major festivals, recorded with mandolin legend David Grisman, toured with master violinist Mark O’Connor and shared stages with everyone from Elvis Costello to Patti Smith to The Roots. The Gitane guitar company has even named a model after him. To say that Stephane Wrembel— who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside— has already had a remarkable career would be an under-statement. This virtuoso guitarist from France has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music.

  • How to Play Gypsy Jazz Solos in the Style of Django Reinhardt

    19:56

    Click for tabs & lesson:

In transcribing and playing Django Reinhardt's solos, I noticed that he does repeat the same shapes on the fingerboard and that he does use the same musical ideas again and again. I wondered how he can use the same idea yet always sounds so fresh, vivid and new? I never noticed that he repeats himself in any way, until I actually played his solos.

The answer is that Django used his musical ideas in a slightly different way each time. The inner rhythm of his phrasing is always changing. The place in the bar in which he starts each phrase is different every time. He creates melodies that you can always sing because he follows his musical taste and not his fingers.

In this lesson I'll teach you a few of Django's improvisational ideas. Play the example phrases, try to understand them and practice until you can use each concept in a different way. That way you'll get Django's ideas and spirit into your own improvisation. You’ll learn something far better than a few licks - ideas with which you can create complete interesting, fresh and new solos yourself.

  • Learn to Play Gypsy-Jazz Favorite ‘Swing Gitan’ | Paul Mehling Acoustic Guitar

    10:45

See the full lesson with tab and notation here:

Not much is known about “Swing Gitan”; it’s so old it’s attributed to “Anonymous” (who must get a ton of royalty checks, just sayin’). But it may have had its origin in a tune called “Stephane Stomp” from an LP made in the ’70s by André Dedjean. [You can find the music for “Swing Gitan” at the bottom of the article here:

Many Gypsy-jazz tunes are in G minor, and this one is no exception. It’s an A/B tune, which means it has no bridge (like “Minor Swing”).

Its A section is deceptively similar to the B section, so it’s easy for players who can’t keep track of such details to get lost. Suffice to say, this detail of A versus B separates the players from the fakers at many jam sessions. Don’t be one of the fakers: if you have difficulty with this, the best solution is to concentrate on the last four bars of the tune for a while until you really have that turnaround down cold. That way, you won’t get lost.
