A snapshot of what Kaki King and I got up to on our recent tour of South Africa. Prior to our penultimate show in Cape Town, the good folk at Vagabond Sessions came along and filmed us playing a new tune of mine amidst the church pews, reverberating these here sonic fruits all about that cathedral. If you're not familiar with the guruness that is Kaki, dive right in. She is full Jedi and it was a proper honour to share the stage/bench with her.

If the rhythms contained within have any tendency to rebound in an outwardly fashion, do NOT be shy. In English speak, I'm politely requesting you to share this on if you're feeling the vibes. It's always appreciated.

Ginormous thanks to the goods peeps at Vagabond for capturing this here moment in time:

Big love to you choms ????

  • Guy Buttery | Improvisation/Kashmir - Live at Clarion Performing Arts Center

    3:35

Way back in February 2020 when live concerts were a thing, I had a string of gigs through California (with a stop in Oregon) which culminated in a show in San Francisco at a really beautiful performing arts centre in Chinatown. After two encores, I was unsure what to play and my promoter in SF (one Dore Stein) shouted, just improvise something!. This is what happened. It's all over the place and implies some suggestion of rhythm at times before somehow landing up at Led Zeppelin's Kashmir? You guess is as good as mine. During this lockdown, I've only been improvising, avoiding any structure or parts playing. There's a true freedom in it. Much like an open ended conversation with a stranger or even a close friend, taking it wherever it leads and responding accordingly. May this end of tour, final show, final song jam find you well. Do feel free to share onward. Keep safe guys!

I am super pleased to release this snippet of my recent session with the incredible Indian Classical singer/sitar player, Kanada Narahari. Kanada and I have been slowly getting some tunes together the last few months with plans for a full length album ahead. The cross-cultural nature of this project reveals more of its true purpose and its own stylistic evolution each day and always reminds me how music often dictates its own path, well outside of our control. What began as a teacher/student arrangement has now grown into a very meaningful and rich friendship. Kanada and I have been meeting almost every week to further understand and excavate each others musical worlds which has been simultaneously challenging and super rewarding. Literally a world of music has been shared. I had yet to experience the creations of Bhimsem Joshi or Kaushiki Chakrabarty and he hadn't heard Busi Mhlongo or The Doors.

It really was oodles of fun working with these guys even if I realized real quick that I was definitely the kakkest musician on stage. The piece Floop is essentially a live looping tune in the key of F hence the ingenious and highly imaginative title. I don't exactly know how the thing goes so I just improvised around the string arrangements and smiled a lot. It was of a pleasant feeling. I hope it is of the same for you. A huge tip of the hat to the National Arts Festival Grahamstown for making this all happen! As always, please do share this about if you think it may be of interest to others on the interwebs. — GB

PRE-ORDER THE NEW ALBUM HERE -

It was a huge honour for me to have Vusi Mahlasela appear on my upcoming record. Having worked with Paul Simon, Derek Trucks and Dave Matthews, Vusi is one of our continents musical greats and his contributions to the album are invaluable. It was pretty damn intense having to direct such a legend. I remember arriving with some melodic and harmonic suggestions as a rough start for the session (which Vusi nailed in no time) but when I suggested he freestyle some vocal lines, things went to level 12. I almost pushed a tear actually. Having grown up with that beautiful voice on many timeless albums as a teenager and then hearing him improvising over my tunes was a very historic moment in my life.

The track you hear here features the Vusi on vocals, Gareth Gale on drums, Piers Faccini on backing vocals and myself on the kitaar.

Huge thanks to Julian Redpath for arranging the studio in Joburg and for multi-tasking as camera man, sound engineer, video editor and tea-maker. Julian also doubles up as an incredible singer/songwriter so check him out here -

Apart from Vusi Mahlasela, the album also features Dan Patlansky, Will Ackerman (founder of Windham Hill Records and multiple Grammy award winner), Gareth Gale, Derek Gripper, Piers Faccini, Shane Cooper, Qadasi and Nibs van der Spuy.

We so enjoyed having Guy visit from South Africa. He was in California for the annual NAMM show in SoCal, took a side trip to Portland for a gig with Kaki King and then travelled (more than 24 hours) by bus and car to get to our remote corner of the earth in Mendocino. Guy wrote the day before, If you had told my teenage self, that I would one day be playing with Alex de Grassi, I'd said you were crazy, but that is what came about when the fingerstyle phenom, Mendo local, and decades long friend (since high school!) joined him for a house concert chez nous. Can't wait til Guy comes back.

  • Nibs van der Spuy & Guy Buttery — In the Shade of the Wild Fig

    3:17

Listen to their full length album here -

Scenes from Lisbon in the 1960's are cut to the opening track from the new album by Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery, Live in Lisbon. Inter-spliced within this video is the original 8mm film (transferred by Nibs himself) of his parents trip to Portugal in October 1964.

After an 8 year silence on the recording front, Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery announce their sophomore release as a duo. Recorded at the end of 2019 in Europe, Live in Lisbon see's their return with a stripped-down performance beautifully captured beside the mighty Tagus River just outside the capital city of Portugal.

Described by FanBible as the finest collaboration between two South African musicians, 2012 saw the release of their critically acclaimed debut, In The Shade of the Wild Fig. Nibs and Guy were touring in France and decided backstage at a festival that it was finally time to put down a collaborative release. For over a decade they had contributed to each other’s recordings and had performed countless shows together all over the world, so finally, in between their respective schedules as solo artists, their first album was released. In The Shade of the Wild Fig was met with high praise across the globe and was nominated for a South African Music Award later that year.

The real magic of a Buttery/van der Spuy performance is in the moment, with a constant and spontaneous exchange of energy which transcends their individualities as two separate parts, shaping up something entirely new. Rolling Stone Magazine spoke of this as well saying, “their individual and quite distinct finger-style techniques fit each other like the proverbial glove.” Live in Lisbon holds true to this too. Guy Buttery comments, knowing Nibs so well as a friend, often reminds me of how transparent music really is. We both always talk about the ability to 'see' where either of us are taking the music with each moment, and more importantly what each other's intention are when going in a certain direction. This always feels very special to bear witness to. This concert recording also acts as something of a best of from their twenty year partnership showcasing their profound abilities to explore each piece, interlocking with tightly fused dynamics as well as featuring new and unrecorded songs.

Recorded in Belém just outside Lisbon, this little seaside town was the launch pad for the countless ships which sailed into the unknown in search of new frontiers over 500 years ago. Vasco de Gama, set sail from there in 1498, and named Natal after arriving on Christmas day in the seaport before it became Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal where both Nibs and Guy hail from.

Nibs van der Spuy recalls the night: It had been a good while since we had played live together, but all the essential ingredients were still very much present. Neither of us were aware that everything was perfectly in place and that we were being recorded. From this intimate setting in Portugal, with a bunch of beautiful people who came from all corners to be a part of this wonderful evening, we are incredibly happy to share this recorded moment with the rest of the world.

    ____________________________________

I've always felt a lot of my musical creations have dealt with nostalgia in some capacity or other so I'm taking it right back here for you and present my debut video as a professional musician (whatever that means). I would have just turned 18. I was officially growing my hair. I was one month out of school. The world was but a fertile soya burger.

I've always been a bit late when it comes to current trends and this video, perhaps more than anything else, reveals exactly that. Everything about this audio-visual fiesta screams the early 90's even though it was filmed in 2001. The shoulder length hair, the unavoidable Nepalese pant action, the tape hiss, the sepia tones, the Peruvian guitar strap, the over-exaggerated reverb sound (with just a smidge of the ubiquitous 90's chorus effect thrown in for good measure), the slightly out of tune guitar and the fact it comes off a VHS tape (with visible head-switching noise at the bottom of the image) not to forget the old school numerical count down at the beginning. A friend of mine whose sense of humour I respected at the time, suggested that if I made a video demo for a record company I'd have a better chance of landing a deal. They (the record company) eventually succumbed to my constant pestering and finally signed me up but later commented that I had a better face for radio. I still don't get it.

This track (ingeniously entitled EBDF#AD - after the guitar tuning) is one of 5 tunes which my brother Bruce filmed against the garage door at my parents place for this demo video. We didn't have a tripod for his camcorder so we used my guitar case which stood upright (somewhat precariously) and then propped the camera up further with some guitar magazines. It's probably the only thing I ever seriously committed to tape. Sepia was the new black so I insisted my brother (who edited back this in 2001) get with the times. Thank God I don't do that weird side to side mouth thing anymore. What was that about? Or maybe that's because I didn't have a beard back then. Mmmmm... I should look into this.

Anyhoo, the inspiration for this piece should be directly credited to the first two Michael Hedges albums both of which were recorded before I was even born (in fact his 2nd album Aerial Boundaries was recorded sometime during the month of my birth -- I secretly like to think the whole record was recorded on the exact day I was born). Even the recording notes at the end of the video were similar to those found on an old Windham Hill album (except they had actually reasonable recording gear). I have absolutely no idea how to play this tune today but clearly remember going for a 3D audio vibe in guitar playing. Whoa! According to the old studio notes jotted down in my recording note book (which has been present at every single studio recording I've ever made) this tune was already 18 months old at the time it was filmed so I would have been 16 when this was written. Nearly half my life ago. Talk about getting old. And fat.

The guitar used in this video, commonly referred to as Mr Moo due to the sticker which you can see that points to the soundhole, has long since retired. I ended up recording my entire first record with this good, old piece of plywood which was a hand-me-down from my older brother (who filmed this here video). If you look closely between all the high def square like pixelated joy of this video, you can see on the underside of my guitar what may just resemble a plaster. I was running with my guitar (or should I say was being chased by an unnamed sibling -- as you do) and planted the poor thing firmly into a rather sharp table corner. After many a tear, I doctored him up my very self with a bit of Elastoplast. I've never taken the plaster off but understand Mr Moo is still slowly on the mend.

I have uploaded the video to watch in HD but I believe even attempting viewage in 144p would be pushing it. It's probably best viewed on a Nokia 3210. Or better yet downloaded onto stiffy disc and ripped to Betamax. Good talk.

Thanks to my long-standing bratjie Nibs van der Spuy for transferring this from my threadbare, mouldy VHS and giving it a good solid rinse in his homemade video cassette cleaner thingy. Oh, and for getting me that record deal. I owe you one.

    Merry viewing guys!
