  • GRITS. - Lay in Blue OFFICIAL VIDEO

    3:29

Captured over the course of two days recording at SignalCorps and HiveMind Recording studios in Brooklyn, NY. The song marks the band's first time working with Vince Chiarito (Black Pumas, Charles Bradley), and in typical GRITS. fashion, perfectly captures the melancholy of knowing nothing lasts forever. Video shot and produced by Zaq McCollum.

    Lyrics:
    Lay me down
    You're livin' proof
    My shakes they fade

    I was a fool
    Still tryin' to pretend
Lay in blue without a friend

    I was a fool
    Lay in blue
    I was a fool, yeah
    Lay in blue

    Video by Luke McCall

    Lyrics:
    Fallen between the lines.
Divided by the gray scale signs
Of what it means to be, but in actuality
I don’t want to be anything but me.
Can’t fit in places you’ve outgrown.
I Gotta make a path on my own.

And it feels right to say that,
    I’m not what you expected.
And it feels right to admit that.
    What’s your version of accepted?

    I’m not falling anymore.
(I finally hit the floor, took stock of where I ended up)
Slept on the ground for days before.
(Grit my teeth and ride this out, pick myself up off the ground)

    And I believe
I believe that it’s ok to ask for someone’s help.
It’s hard to struggle by yourself.
    And I believe
I believe that it’s ok to not know where to turn.
Or think about the bridges burned.

And it feels right to say this.
Get it off of, off of my chest.
And I don’t wanna be accepted,
If it means that it was never what I wanted.

    I’m not falling anymore.
(I finally hit the floor, took stock of where I ended up)
Slept on the ground for days before.
(Grit my teeth and ride this out, pick myself up off the ground)

    I’m not falling.

    I don’t wanna be accepted,
If it means that it was never what I wanted.
    (I’m not falling anymore)
    I don’t wanna be accepted,
If it means that it was never what I wanted.

And it feels right to get this off my chest.
    I don’t wanna be accepted.

Grits were also very close friends with The Muffins and Dave Newhouse himself has stated that Grits were a great source of inspiration to him.But the biggest proof of their close relation is the fact that the second archival Grits album ''Rare birds'' (1997, Cuneinform) was a live recording during the summer of 76' in the backyard of The Muffins' main house. Moreover Brian Rapp, who served as an early engineer and percussionist for The Muffins, guests on percussion in two tracks of this live performance.''Rare birds'' features the most proggy material of any Grits release with 4 out of the 7 compositions being 12 minutes or longer, the title track actually reached the 26-min. mark! This is some pretty nice and solid US Prog of the 70's with emphasis on folky, jazzy and light psychedelic influences, as prooved by the tons of interplays, laid-back jams and muddy rhythmic patterns. The long tracks, while not masterpieces, are excellent to say the least, with dominant use of violin, electric guitar, organ and electric piano and strong Mahavishnu Orchestra/East of Eden cross references, albeit inspired more by the US rural county.Multiple variations and extended instrumental work with dramatic edges, technical displays and several proggy changes. It's a shame this band was never rewarded with a contract for at least one proper album.

    Released 1997 (Archival, Live)

    Cat#: FSRCD042
    Formats: CD
    Digital Release: 15th September 2008
    Physical Release: 29th September 2008

    About This Release:

Hailing from Brighton, The Grits emerge with their own take on raw, rare and grimy instrumental funk. Their journey began in 2005 with guitarist Stuart ''Countryboy'' Carter and Nick ''The Organiser'' Harris. Bassist James and drummer Johnny were recruited soon after, marking the birth of one seriously slick funk four piece.

Their self titled debut includes a superb cover of The Soul Drifters 'Funky Soul Brother', as well as 'Boom Boom', the sold out 45 released on Freestyle and its B side 'Jan Jan' - an instant raw funk classic championed by Radio 2's Mark Lamarr and Radio 6 funkster Craig Charles.

With their roots firmly steeped in classic funk, The Grits add their own slant with trashy guitars, crunchy drums and deep bass. Add to this super-modulated Moog, a bag of percussion and their trademark guttural vocal grunts and you have a live show that never fails to work their live audiences into a funk frenzy.

On record, The Grits manage to keep the rawness alive, whilst upping the stakes sonically with modular analogue synths, piano, harmonica and even a huge metal cabinet played with a stick!

    Pure funk gold! Enjoy!

''The Grits are going to be GODS!'' Craig Charles - Radio 6

''The Grits seem to be doing all the right things'' Mark Lamarr - Radio 2

You're the only one to talk to

Resizing myself once again to fit into you
If I was smarter I would leave
If I was smart I'd do a lot of things

  • Ooh Ahh By Grits

    3:54

    My life be like
    Ooh Aah (yeah), Ooh Ooh
    My life be like (yeah)
Ooh Aah, Ooh Aah (yeah), Ooh Ooh
    Ooh Aah (yeah), Ooh Ooh
    My life be like (yeah)
Ooh Aah, Ooh Aah (yeah), Ooh Ooh
    My life be like (yeah)

It's times like these that make me say
Lord if you see me please come my way
Leavin' bread crumbs for when I stray
Rely on sacrifice and the price you paid
Feel me like a fingertip (fa-finger tip, fa-finger tip)
    Sometimes I fall I slip
My heartfelt desire be more like you
Tryin' not to quench your fire with the things I do

I'm on an island by my lonesome stranded
    Low key and stayin' candid
Reflect on all the things I try my hand at
Church for the equations to persuasions I'm used to
Finding comfort in the zones of closet bones I get loose to
    A mountainous fontaine
Spinnin' and monsoonin', grinnin' it's hign octane
    Explosive how I came
Rollin' down hills cause lifes a hastle
Encircled by my folly like a moat surround a castle
Stay afloat, catch a second wind
    Thin
    Is the air I breathe
Teary eyed nose runnin' wipe the snot on my sleeve
I'm callin' on the Savior to be all that I need
Please forgive me my behavior had me lost at light speed

It's times like these that make me say
Lord if you see me please come my way
Leavin' bread crumbs for when I stray
Rely on sacrifice and the price you paid
Feel me like a fingertip (fa-finger tip, fa-finger tip)
    Sometimes I fall I slip
My heartfelt desire be more like you
Tryin' not to quench your fire with the things I do

The fear of never fallin' in love
And the tears after losin' the feelings of what you thought love was
Like the dirt still up under the rug (My life be like)
Bad characteristics covered in Christs blood
The joy of new birth and the pain of growin' up
The bliss between givin' my all and givin' up
    The highs and lows
    Paths and roads I chose
    In the cold I froze
    Tryin' to ease my woes
    In this world of sin
    Clothes to thin to fend
    So to God I send
    Words of help to win
In grumblings so deep letters could never express
So the sound of Ooh Aah beneath my breath projects

It's times like these that make me say
Lord if you see me please come my way
Leavin' bread crumbs for when I stray
Rely on sacrifice and the price you paid
Feel me like a fingertip (fa-finger tip, fa-finger tip)
    Sometimes I fall I slip
My heartfelt desire be more like you
Tryin' not to quench your fire with the things I do

    My life be like
    Ooh Aah Ooh
    Dum dum ditty
Here come that boy from the Capital City
Last up on the Grits new ditty
But eight bars or the truth well do (uh)
I believe theres a private stunnin
And I believe in the Kindgom Comming
I believe if you seek the truth
You don't need to look far cause it's gonna find you
So why oh why do I trip and stumble?
And ooh aah as commitment crumbles?
    I can't believe that I'm here again....

It's times like these that make me say
Lord if you see me please come my way
Leavin' bread crumbs for when I stray
Rely on sacrifice and the price you paid
Feel me like a fingertip (fa-finger tip, fa-finger tip)
