  • The Grateful Dead - Ripple

    4:14

    Link to the picture:

Robert Hunter, wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote Brokedown Palace and To Lay Me Down (reputedly also drinking an entire bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco.
Like many folk songs, Ripple addresses itself as a song and an instrument of the performers' emotional expression. Several lines throughout the song echo the 23rd Psalm of the Bible.

    Trip hard and good, motherfuckers.

  • Grateful Dead - Sugar Magnolia / Scarlet Begonias / Fire On The Mountain

    30:39

This is the opening sequence from one of the most famous, and highly regarded, Grateful Dead shows of all time, the Closing Of Winterland. With opening acts the New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Blues Brothers, the Dead didn't hit the stage until midnight, and played until the sun rose. Bill Graham served breakfast to everyone after the show. - David Lemieux

This is a very significant show as it was the very first time The Grateful Dead did a national radio broadcast. They had done many local radio simulcasts before, but this was right after they returned from a two year haitus from touring and this broadcast was a big deal at the time.

  • Grateful Dead - Morning Dew

    13:22

From the middle night of a five night stand that were billed as the Dead's Farewell Concerts, this is widely considered one of the greatest, and most emotional, versions of Morning Dew ever performed by the Grateful Dead. Thankfully, the Dead's farewell proved to be a two year hiatus from live touring, and in June 1976 they returned to the road. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Truckin

    10:03

From the penultimate show of the Radio City Music Hall run in 1980, Truckin' was also a great song to launch the second set jam. During this period, Truckin' was generally slotted in one of two places: before the Drums/Space sequence, sending the Dead into an uninterrupted hour-long segued sequence of music, or coming out of Space. Toward the end of the 1980s, it was used almost exclusively in the former slot, but the latter placement of Truckin' always began a wonderful, uninterrupted, and long sequence of Dead magic. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Friend of The Devil

    3:24

    Garcia,Dawson,Hunter

    Lyrics:
I lit out from reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds
Didnt get to sleep last night till the morning came around.

Set out runnin but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills
I spent the night in utah in a cave up in the hills.

Set out runnin but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there
He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air.

Set out runnin but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night,
The first ones named sweet anne marie, and shes my hearts delight.
The second one is prison, babe, the sheriffs on my trail,
And if he catches up with me, Ill spend my life in jail.

Got a wife in chino, babe, and one in cherokee
The first one says shes got my child, but it dont look like me.

Set out runnin but I take my time,
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

As I was walkin' 'round Grosvenor Square
Not a chill to the winter but a nip to the air,
From the other direction, she was calling my eye,
It could be an illusion, but I might as well try, might as well try.

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes.
And I knew without askin' she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.

In the thick of the evening when the dealing got rough,
She was too pat to open and too cool to bluff.
As I picked up my matches and was closing the door,
I had one of those flashes I'd been there before, been there before.

Well, I ain't often right but I've never been wrong.
Seldom turns out the way it does in a song.
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Well there ain't nothing wrong with the way she moves,
Scarlet begonias or a touch of the blues.
And there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyes,
I had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by

    The wind in the willow's playin' Tea for Two;
The sky was yellow and the sun was blue,
Strangers stoppin' strangers just to shake their hand,
Everybody's playin' in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band.

  • Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station Terrapin Station

    16:21

    Lyrics:
    Lady With A Fan

    Let my inspiration flow
    in token lines suggesting rhythm
    that will not forsake me
till my tale is told and done

    While the firelight's aglow
strange shadows in the flames will grow
    till things we've never seen
    will seem familiar

    Shadows of a sailor forming
winds both foul and fair all swarm
down in Carlisle he loved a lady
    many years ago

Here beside him stands a man
a soldier by the looks of him
    who came through many fights
    but lost at love

    While the storyteller speaks
a door within the fire creaks
    suddenly flies open
and a girl is standing there

    Eyes alight with glowing hair
all that fancy paints as fair
she takes her fan and throws it
    in the lion's den

Which of you to gain me, tell
will risk uncertain pains of Hell?
    I will not forgive you
if you will not take the chance

The sailor gave at least a try
the soldier being much too wise
    strategy was his strength
    and not disaster

    The sailor coming out again
the lady fairly lept at him
    that's how it stands today
you decide if he was wise

    The storyteller makes no choice
soon you will not hear his voice
his job is to shed light
    and not to master

Since the end is never told
we pay the teller off in gold
in hopes he will come back
but he cannot be bought or sold

    Terrapin Station

    Inspiration, move me brightly
light the song with sense and color,
    hold away despair
More than this I will not ask
faced with mysteries dark and vast
statements just seem vain at last
some rise, some fall, some climb
    to get to Terrapin

    Counting stars by candlelight
all are dim but one is bright:
    the spiral light of Venus
    rising first and shining best,
    From the northwest corner
    of a brand-new crescent moon
    crickets and cicadas sing
    a rare and different tune

    Terrapin Station
in the shadow of the moon
    Terrapin Station
and I know we'll be there soon

    Terrapin - I can't figure out
Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning
Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on
and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN

    At A Siding

    While you were gone
    these spaces filled with darkness
    The obvious was hidden
    With nothing to believe in
the compass always points to Terrapin

The sullen wings of fortune beat like rain
You're back in Terrapin for good or ill again
    For good or ill again

  • Grateful Dead - St. Stephen

    7:55

In and out of the repertoire it goes...St. Stephen was around for a long time, but not always around. It was played consistently 1968-1971, then gone until its return in 1976, when it was played quite a bit through 1976 and 1977, into early 1978. It then returned for three versions twice, 12/30/78 to 1/10/79, and from 10/11/83 to 10/31/83, after which it was never heard live again. This is from the magnificent Closing Of Winterland show. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Cold Rain And Snow

    6:38

One of the most consistently played songs in the Dead's repertoire 1966-1995, Cold Rain and Snow was quite commonly a show-opener, but also appeared in various places throughout first sets, and occasionally second sets. This one, from the magnificent Buffalo 89 show, was the third song of the first set, on a hot, humid, and later rainy night in Western New York. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Playing in the Band - Grateful Dead Skull & Roses

    4:41

    Lyrics:

    Some folks trust to reason
    Others trust to might
    I don't trust to nothing
But I know it come out right

    Say it once again now
    Oh I hope you understand
    When it's done and over
Lord, a man is just a man

    Playing
    Playing in the band
    Daybreak
    Daybreak on the land

    Some folks look for answers
    Others look for fights
    Some folks up in treetops
Just look to see the sights

    I can tell your future
    Look what's in your hand
But I can't stop for nothing
I'm just playing in the band

    Playing
    Playing in the band
    Daybreak
    Daybreak on the land

    Standing on a tower
    World at my command
    You just keep a turning
While I'm playing in the band

    If a man among you
Got no sin upon his hand
Let him cast a stone at me
    For playing in the band

    Playing
    Playing in the band
    Daybreak
    Daybreak on the land
    Playing
    Playing in the band
    Daybreak Daybreak on the land

    8:17

Another Garcia-Hunter classic that disappeared from the repertoire for way too long, New Speedway Boogie was gone from 1970 to 1991, when it finally returned in February at the Oakland Coliseum. This bluesy Workingman's Dead standout stretched out and allowed the Dead to take it to some exciting places. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones

    9:20

Debuting in September 1982, Throwing Stones rather quickly found a home as the penultimate song of many Grateful Dead second sets in the final decade+ of the Dead's touring activities. Usually followed by Not Fade Away, Throwing Stones was a powerful Weir-Barlow song with a political message, a rarity for the Grateful Dead. Now, nearly forty years after its debut, its message still resonates, perhaps more strongly than ever. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - High Time

    7:03

High Time was played quite a bit in 1969 and 1970, and was one of the many standouts on Workingman's Dead in 1970 (OK, all eight songs on the album are standouts!). It was dropped in 1970 until it made its return in 1976, and it was played every year 1976-1995 with the exception of 1978, 1983, and 1989. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Iko Iko

    7:16

One of the largest crowds to see the Grateful Dead perform live in the 1980s and 1990s, at the last-ever concert at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, the July 7, 1989 audience was treated with one of the best shows of 1989, a year that's widely considered one of the most consistently great of the Dead's 30 year touring history. Opening with Hell In A Bucket, the band then jumped right into their unofficial party anthem, a song that was always certain to get everyone up and dancing: Iko Iko. This staple of the New Orleans sound at which the Dead were adept at playing was always a buoyant, ebullient entry in any Grateful Dead setlist. As you'll see in the video, the band has much fun playing it on this night as we all had dancing to it. - David Lemieux

    3:51

Fire On The Mountain by the Grateful Dead. It's from their 1978 album, Shakedown Street.

  • Grateful Dead - Bird Song

    13:58

Grateful Dead first sets were generally reserved for shorter songs, going back to 1970 or so. There were a few very important exceptions to this rule, though, with Playing In The Band being a major jamming vehicle for the Dead 1972-1974, usually as the first set closer. Bird Song was played mostly in the first set 1971-1973, and provided the Dead loads of run to stretch and explore. When it returned to the repertoire in 1980, first acoustically for the Warfield-Radio City shows, and then in November electrically, it would stick around until 1995 as a first set improvisational juggernaut. This typically out-there version shows where the Dead could take off to in their later years. - David Lemieux

    Weir;Hunter
    Lyrics:
Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I dont care,
Saw my baby down by the river, knew shed have to come up soon for air.

Sweet blossom come on, under the willow, we can have high times if youll abide
We can discover the wonders of nature, rolling in the rushes down by the riverside.

Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need,
Takes the wheel when Im seeing double, pays my ticket when I speed

She comes skimmin through rays of violet, she can wade in a drop of dew,
She dont come and I dont follow, waits backstage while I sing to you.

Well, she can dance a cajun rhythm, jump like a willys in four wheel drive.
Shes a summer love for spring, fall and winter. she can make happy any man alive.

Sugar magnolia, ringing that bluebell, caught up in sunlight, come on out singing
Ill walk you in the sunshine, come on honey, come along with me.

Shes got everything delightful, shes got everything I need,
A breeze in the pines and the sun and bright moonlight, lazing in the sunshine yes
    Indeed.

Sometimes when the cuckoos crying, when the moon is half way down,
Sometimes when the night is dying, I take me out and I wander around, I wander
    round.

Sunshine, daydream, walking in the tall trees, going where the wind goes
Blooming like a red rose, breathing more freely,
Ride our singin, Ill walk you in the morning sunshine
Sunshine, daydream. sunshine, daydream. walking in the sunshine.

  • Grateful Dead - So Many Roads

    6:31

So Many Roads bounced around the setlist during its lifetime, sometimes appearing in the first set, sometimes the second. I always preferred it in this slot, the penultimate song of the first set before a rocking Weir song to close. - David Lemieux

    5:51

From the album The Very Best of The Grateful Dead , originally from the 1987 album In The Dark.

  • Grateful Dead - They Love Each Other

    7:44

One of the few songs in the Dead's repertoire that underwent a dramatic rearrangement during its lifetime, similar to Friend Of The Devil and Loose Lucy. In 1973, They Love Each Other appeared in a peppy arrangement, with a very cool bridge. It was then dropped, only to return in 1976 in a much slower arrangement, without the bridge. It was recorded for Jerry's Reflections album. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - Help On The Way / Slipknot! / Franklins Tower

    24:45

Featuring the two-keyboard, two-guitar, two-drummer, one-bass Grateful Dead lineup, this magnificent, soaring Help/Slip/Franklin's is one of the best of the late-era returns of this trio. In the lineup 1975-1977, 1983-1985, and 1989-1995, this enigmatic addition to the repertoire is one of the most dynamic and ambitious song cycles the Dead ever wrote and performed. From the Summer Tour of 1991 that also featured great shows at Deer Creek, Giants Stadium, Chicago, and Pine Knob, among others, this was the second release in the View From The Vault series. - David Lemieux

  • Grateful Dead - China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider

    13:00

By 1990, China/Rider had been in the Dead's repertoire for more than 20 years, since they were first joined in the Fall of 1969. A consistently played combination until 1995 (aside from a brief hiatus 1975-1978, with one performance during that span on 12/29/77), this was most commonly a second set opener in the later years, usually going into a Weir song. This sequence is from Brent's final tour with the Grateful Dead. - David Lemieux

  • 5 Hour Grateful Dead Jam Only Compilation 1966-1972

    5:12:34

Hi friends. Thank you so much for being apart of this community with me, I couldn't call a larger group of humans family.

This is the second 5 hour Grateful Dead compilation I've mixed and released, now focusing on the early years. Left a few vocals in there just cause. It's a little on the heavier side and Dark Star is quite abundant but I'm sure you won't mind.

As always please share all thoughts, feelings, stories, approvals or criticisms, constructive or not, my mind is completely open from the furthest reaches of the universe to the center of our soul.

Unfortunately, due to computer storage reasons I deleted the original files so I can't quite remember all of the dates of recordings so this one will be a little puzzle for all of us to figure out. Feel free to tag a time, song, and date.
