  • National Anthem of Bulgaria

    1:14

Originally written and composed by a Bulgarian student in 1885, as he went off to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian war, the song was titled “Горда Стара планина” (“Gorda Stara planina”) [Proudly Rise the Balkan Peaks]. The original lyrics have undergone revisions since its original composition, the latest after the fall of the communist government in 1990 where verses not in the original lyrics speaking of friendship with Russia, the Communist Party, and fallen fighters were removed. As the national anthem its name comes from the first line of the chorus rather than the first line of the verse.

  • Bulgaria: State of emergency declared as flooding causes mayhem in south

    1:52

The Bulgarian government declared a state of emergency in the Smolyan municipality, Sunday, as around 330 villages in Southern Bulgaria were left without electricity after severe flooding and snowfall.

Floods also affected the border-crossing point of Kapitan Andreevo between Bulgaria and Turkey, one of the busiest between the countries, after the road leading to Turkey was left submerged by flood water. Vehicles were diverted towards other border points, causing kilometre-long traffic jams.

  • Day 44: “Arrival in Bulgaria”

    1:15

#50Days4Refugees Day 44: “Arrival in Bulgaria”
When dreaming up and diving into this project, one of the obstacles which we severely underestimated was the amount of paperwork and logistics with government agencies and refugee organizations that would need to be taken care of in order to 1) simply step foot into the refugee camps 2) set up our workshops 3) (and this was a huge one!) bring cameras and a film crew into the camps. We were fortunate that around 90% of our activities went according to our planning, but there were definitely a few uncomfortable, unexpected bumps along the way! In Bulgaria, after 9 months of communication with the Bulgarian National Agency for Refugees and Caritas Bulgaria, we were finally approved and allowed to enter the Ovcha Kupel Refugee Camp for 8 hours over two days – March 11 and 12, 2019.

In today’s clip, you can see us enjoying a last-minute recap of some of the fairytale stories we were planning to share with the kids in our workshop that day as we cheerfully headed towards the camp, and then reaching the Ovcha Kupel camp - where we hit one of our unexpected bumps and discovered issues with our permit to enter the camp. Thankfully, we were greeted by Krasimira Zaneva, an official from the National Refugee Agency and our translator Bauar from Caritas who sorted out the wrinkle that was threatening to completely derail our 9 months of work! We collectively breathed a large sigh of relief and carried on into the camp.

We were immediately greeted by a very enthusiastic group of children, who quickly and excitedly pulled us into a very competitive game of “Chush” with them (from which we were very quickly outsmarted and eliminated!) - and we were off! It was time to bring our 9 months of planning into reality.

  • Jeff Simmonds - A Nice New Bulgarian Name

    3:32

In 1984 The Bulgarian government began a program of Bulgarisation in which the Turkish minority were forced to take new Bulgarian names. The Government even erased Turkish names from headstones, renaming the dead with Bulgarian names in an attempt to erase even the memory of the existence of a Turkish minority. The forced assimilation also included the banning of tradition Turkish trousers.

Hundreds of protesters built barricades around Bulgaria's parliament, effectively trapping over 100 lawmakers, ministers, and journalists in the building for more than seven hours on Tuesday following a brief scuffle with police.
Protesters pulled out sidewalk tiles and piled garbage bins to cut off roads to Bulgaria's parliament, shouting Mafia! and Resign! and Red Garbage!, to keep the deputies under blockade until the Socialist-led government steps down.

An earlier attempt to get deputies out of the parliament with a bus led to a scuffle with police. It was aborted after protesters threw bottles and other objects at the bus, while others sat in front of it.

Thousands of Bulgarians have been protesting almost daily in Sofia since last month following a government decision to name a powerful media magnate as security chief, which many see as an example of private interests controlling state institutions.

The government's withdrawal of the appointment failed to quell public discontent in the European Union's poorest country, which also is one of the bloc's most corrupt.

In view of the critical and terrible situation of the BULGARIAN POPULATION of the Monastir vilayet following the devastations and cruelties perpetrated by the Turkish troops and bashibazouks, in view of the fact that these devastations and cruelties continue systematically, and that one cannot foresee how far they will reach; in view, furthermore, of the fact that HERE EVERYTHING BULGARIAN is running the risk of perishing and being obliterated without a trace by violence, hunger and by approaching poverty, the General Staff considers it its duty to draw the attention of the Esteemed Bulgarian Government to the fatal consequences for the BULGARIAN NATION, if it fails to discharge its duty to its own brothers here in an impressive and energetic manner, made imperative by force of circumstances and by the danger threatening the common BULGARIAN HOMELAND at the present moment...

    2:42

A flag depicting the 'Imperial Eagle', a symbol of the Third Reich, was waved among a crowd of Bulgarian nationalists protesting against refugees in Burgas on Saturday.

SOT, Plamen Ivanov, protester from Burgas (Bulgarian): Because I see what's happening in France, in Germany, and I don't want this to happen here. If this happens here, it will become a fair. We aren't like German people and take many victims. We can't let this to happen with women, with children, with old people. So we come out to say that it's not good these people to come here. We don't want to let in these kind of people and we don't want them to come.

SOT, Ivan Georgiev, protester from Burgas (Bulgarian): We won't sell Bulgaria and we won't admit our State, our enslaver, to sell it. We're gathered here today because few days ago, they sold our air space. We want this contract to be immediately stopped, because Turkish airplanes fly over our country. 10 million healthy and strong refugees from 18-old to 40-old wait for us on the South border. We don't have army, we don't have army and tanks, we want an immediate mobilization of the army, to be admitted law for conscription. We want this to happen immediately, because the protest will expand to all Bulgarian cities and will turn into civil insubordination.

The original song has undergone revisions since its original composition, the latest after the fall of the communist government in 1990 where a verse not in the original song speaking of friendship with Russia was removed. 3:10

We guess everyone's aware of what's going on in North-East right now..Yeah it's about CAB, which now obviously has been declared as Citizenship Amendment Act. We will be outnumbered in our own states if the illegal immigrants are allowed to reside here. And we are very unfortunate that our own government is trying to impose the CAB upon us, selling us off.

So through this song we tried to express our feelings, our anguish on the government for doing this to us, for cheating us for killing their and our own innocent students and children.

And we thank all our indian brothers and sisters who have been raising their voices against this cruel and ruthless government and being with us, for supporting us. A heartful thanks you all the beautiful souls out there who are with us.

So Tiniush Momin performed this RAP song named Anti-CAB as a protest against the government. He sang on it in his own mother tongue, i.e Garo, as he's from Meghalaya. So give it a listen.

    Thank you all.

  • Bulgarian Patriotic Song - Тих бял Дунав

    2:35

Тих бял Дунав се вълнува (Still White Danube Undulates) also known as the Botev March, is a popular Bulgarian patriotic song. The lyrics are based on that of a poem by Ivan Vazov titled ''Radetzky'' after the steamship seized by the rebels. The storyline recounts a historically accurate incident from the Bulgarian struggles against Ottoman rule, which has earned the status of modern myth for Bulgarians, to some degree due to this song. On 29 May 1876 Bulgarian revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev at the head of 205-strong company of rebels seized control of the Austro-Hungarian passenger steamship Radetzky by armed force and used it to cross the Danube from Romania to the Bulgarian territories of the Ottoman Empire in order to join the April Uprising. Dagobert Engländer, Captain of the Radetzky, later recounted that he had rarely met a man so impressive or energetic as Botev. The melody was composed by vocalist Ivan Karadzhov, according to his biography. In some performances of the song, the fourth verse is omitted.

    Current National Anthem of Bulgaria:

Shumi Maritsa (Maritsa Rushes) was the Bulgarian national anthem from 1886 until 1947. The music was derived from the German folk song Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren that was very popular in Bulgaria in the mid-19th century. The original text was written by Nikola Zhivkov, a head teacher in Veles (now in the Republic of Macedonia). The lyrics were edited many times, most notably in 1912 by the poet Ivan Vazov.

Back in mid-90s some things happened that pointed the severe need for change in Bulgaria's stagnant, misery-grabbed society - the government was forced to cede power in 1997 and the Bulgarian metal scene experienced a revival.
The new government undertook reforms that stabilized the market and as a result it became easier to purchase high-quality musical equipment and instruments. Naturally, this catalyzed the development of a whole new wave of bands and musicians. The first wave had been in the late 80s and the early 90s, when the
iron grip of communism had begun to loosen and this unleashed a surge of pent-up rage and hidden talent. Some of the representatives of the heavy part of this first wave were Amadeus, Kassandra, Past Redemption, Kriza, Scapegoat.

Hyperborea are among the Bulgarian metal bands which started their activity in mid-late 90s and were alive for the years ahead – like Korozy, Desolate, Samhain, Brainstorm, Enthrallment. They were not a band up till mid-97; rather a bunch of metalheads who went to parties, listened to Sepultura, Death, Obituary and Pestilence and drank their heads off. They so wanted to be like these bands. Gradually, it became clear that their vocalist, Kiril Kirilov, was just as good as the vocalists of their favourite bands. The first guitarist of the band, Krum Doinov, and his friend, Iliya Dimitrov, decided to try to
make something of it, and with the help of Niki Paskalev, who was, and still is, a great guitarist, they started to take guitar lessons. Things started to take shape in the early spring of 1998, when they, along with Plamen Petkov (bass) and Ivaylo Baev (drums) made their first gigs before a crazy, death metal-thirsty audience. Hyperborea played something like Florida-style death metal with huge thrash influence and traces of the Scandinavian scene – roughly, what all the members listened to. Things started to unfold very quickly. Iliya was replaced by Jordan Kunchev and in 1999 Ivo was replaced . Hyperborea started making concert after concert in Sofia, Plovdiv, Primorsko, Haskovo, Svoge, Shumen, Blagoevgrad, as well as in Romania. The band became popular because they played their favourite music in an honest manner, without trying to please anybody but themselves. In a very early stage, at some concert the death-metallers grabbed the audience’s prize. In this period they recorded a demo called “Catharsis”, containing 8 songs. In 2002 Alex was replaced by Zhivko Kyosev. With him Hyperborea recorded their debut album “Architecture of mind” (BM) which earned spectacular reviews from the Bulgarian metal media like Pro-Rock Magazine, which gave it a 9/10 score and qualified the band as “the future of heavy music in Bulgaria”.
In 2003 Plamen was replaced by Vladimir Ivanov and in 2004 Krum was replaced by Andrey Andronov. In the following years Hyperborea put all their effort in the second album “Cryogenic Somnia” (Counter Attack Productions) which was released in 2007. It was placed as the best Bulgarian metal album of the year by the readers
of Pro-Rock Magazine. Foreign media described it as a more complex work saying that: “…The works characterize considerable changeability and they contain the many motifs… Listening the whole - my associating hit to Florida’s DEATH…”, or: “…Their songs have sometimes confusingly complex rhythmic patterns but always sound sensibly”, or: “The offered material is more varied than the recordings of some well established US bands”.
In early 2011 Vladimir left and was replaced by Dinko Dimov, a very experienced and talented bassist.

  • Oh, Shipka Pass! — English subs and translation

    5:17

Principality of Bulgaria, 1883 (translated by the Russian poet Vladimir Lugovoj)

An ode by the great Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov dedicated to the heroic defense of Shipka Pass by the forces of the Russian troops and the Bulgarian militia in the summer of 1877. Its original name sounds like Militiamen at Shipka («Опълченците на Шипка»). First published in 1883, it later became a part of the collection The Epic of the Forgotten (1881-1884). In this video, the poem is performed in abbreviated form and rock version by the Bulgarian band «Епизод», which also has a Bulgarian (original) version of this music.

Portrayed by General Nikolaj Stoletov (1831—1912), Russian commander of the Bulgarian militia (Opalchentsi) during the Battle of Shipka Pass and a national hero of Bulgaria. In the lyrics of this song he is called Our hero Stoletov, the glorious general.

LYRICS (Complete original ones, differing from the video):

    Не сражались рядом мёртвые с живыми;
