    Goree Carter - Rock Awhile

    2:42

First rock'n'roll with famous guitar intro later used in many rock'n'roll songs.
It has been cited as a contender for the first rock and roll record title and a much more appropriate candidate than the more frequently cited Rocket 88 (1951). Carter's over-driven electric guitar style was similar to that of Chuck Berry from 1955 onwards.

Goree Carter - Rock Awhile, 1949

    2:46

Goree Carter is best known for his 1949 single, Rock Awhile, which has been cited by several sources as the first rock and roll record, featuring an over-driven electric guitar style similar to that of Chuck Berry years later. Carter recorded Rock Awhile at the age of 18, and its rediscovery has posthumously brought him recognition as a forefather of rock and roll. As a soldier, he was drafted into military service at the age of 19, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Carl Campbell & Orchestra w/ Goree Carter Gettin High

I do not own the copyright to this recording. This video is for historical and educational purposes

Carl Campbell was apparantly a Houston club singer/bandleader in the 1940's and 50's. In 1949, he cut four songs with the Freedom label. The next year found him making one record as the frontman for Henry Hayes' 4 Kings for Peacock. He wasn't heard from again until 1958 when he recorded two songs for the Magic label. It's difficult to know whether this record was ever released.
