Portishead.

    Synku miły i wybrany,
    Rozdziel z matką swoje rany,
A wszakom cię, synku miły, w swem sercu nosiła,
    A takież tobie wiernie służyła.
Przemów k matce, bych się ucieszyła,
Bo już jidziesz ode mnie, moja nadziejo miła.

    (English)
My son, my chosen and beloved
Share your wounds with your mother
And because, dear son, I have always carried you in my heart,
    And always served you faithfully
Speak to your mother, to make her happy,
Although you are already leaving me, my cherished hope.

The first movement of Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. The work was composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style. It was premièred on 4 April 1977, at the Royan International Festival, with Stefania Woytowicz as soprano and Ernest Bour as conductor.

  • Górecki - Miserere

    32:46

    Henryk Górecki - Miserere, 1981.

Performed by the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Recorded at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Chicago.

This Miserere, composed in 1981 for a large choir, was written as a protest against the assault of Solidarity activists in the city of Bydgoszcz by the Polish Militia. However, due to the declaration of martial law, the piece was not able to be performed until 1987.

The entire text is only comprised of five words: Domine Deus Noster, (Lord our God) which is repeated for the first 10 sections of the piece, followed by a final section with the text Miserere nobis (Lord have mercy on us). It is a large arch form, with a long additive structure, as each of eight voice parts enters one at a time.

The piece is extremely quiet for the first three minutes or so, turn up your volumes.

Henryk Górecki belongs to the important generation of Polish composers who were born during the 1930’s such as Krzysztof Penderécki and Wojciech Kilar. His works characterize for their minimalist elements (term which he hated) and sacred music among the most important. His Second Symphony which was commissioned by the Kosciuzko Foundation of New York in 1973 to celebrate the 500 anniversary of the birth of Nikolaus Copernicus, one of Poland’s more important scientists; he seriously proposed scientifically for the first time in almost two millennia an heliocentric model for the solar system. Although the theory has received several modifications across half a millennium of scientific revolution, the main idea still remains: Earth turns or gravitates around the sun with all its companion planets. Górecki used religious texts as well as extracts from Copernicus’ main treatise De revolutionibus orbium coelestium.

    14:23

    Three Dances - for orchestra
    Written by Henryk Górecki

Performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Antoni Wit

    © PWM Edition

    The piece contains 3 movements:

    00:00 - I.
    03:03 - II.
    08:19 - III.

Three Dances for orchestra was commissioned from Górecki by the Rybnik Philharmonic. The composer took up this commission largely for sentimental reasons: It was in Rybnik’s Secondary Music School that he began his formal musical education. Among the important figures for musical life in the town, and for Górecki’s own development, there were the Szafranek brothers, Karol and Antoni. As a student in the local music school, the future composer played violin in the Rybnik Philharmonic Orchestra.
He gladly accepted the request to compose a piece for the Philharmonic as an opportunity for a kind of “sentimental journey back in time”. The resulting music – the striking Three Dances for orchestra – clearly look back to the past. They are maintained in a lively, rhythmically fervent neoclassical style. Energetic opening and closing dances are contrasted with the lyrical, highly expressive central piece, played by the strings.

This video is for educational purposes only. I do not own the rights to the music or the performance.

  • Henryk Górecki - Symphony No. 3 - Live 1977 Premiere Recording

    55:59

Polish composer Henryk Górecki's Symphony No. 3 for soprano and orchestra (1976) is a conceptual work which utilizes three Polish texts to convey, through sorrow and loss, the emotional bond between a mother and her child.

When Górecki premiered his 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs' at the 1977 Festival of Contemporary Art in Royan, France, it was met with a polarizing reception. Most Polish critics lauded its simple beauty and emotional concept, whilst the Western critics present lambasted it as backward-looking and repetitive, comparing it to Górecki's earlier serial, dissonant, and modernist works. According to Górecki himself, the famed composer Pierre Boulez allegedly shouted Merde! during the concluding applause.

Despite being recorded several more times, it did not raise Górecki's profile out of the obscurity of the musical avant-garde until a recording featuring the London Sinfonietta and the soprano Dawn Upshaw was released in 1992 on the Nonesuch label. The composition has since become critically acclaimed and cemented Górecki's status as one of the finest 'holy minimalist' composers alongside Arvo Pärt and John Taverner.

Performed by the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden conducted by Ernest Bour, featuring soprano Stefania Woytowicz. Recorded live at the Festival of Contemporary Art in Royan, France on April 4th 1977.
