Gladys Knight has always been one of my favorites. What a classy lady!

Gladys Knight & The Pips were an R&B/soul family musical act from Atlanta, Georgia, active from 1953 to 1989. The group was best known for their string of hit singles on Motown's Soul record label and Buddah Records from 1967 to 1975, including I Heard It Through the Grapevine (1967) and Midnight Train to Georgia (1973). The longest-lived incarnation of the act featured Gladys Knight on lead vocals, with The Pips, who included her brother Merald Bubba Knight and their cousins Edward Patten and William Guest, as backup singers.

Gladys Maria Knight, known as the Empress of Soul, is an American singer-songwriter, actress, businesswoman, humanitarian, and author. A talented singer and actress, Gladys Knight started out on the road to success at an early age. She made her solo singing debut at the age of four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church in Atlanta.

Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me

I've had my share of life's ups and downs
But fate's been kind, the downs have been few
I guess you could say that I've been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it's all because of you

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Ooo, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Ah, you're the best thing that ever happened to me

Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through
'Cause for every moment that I've spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, ah, just loving you

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Oh, you're the best thing that ever happened to me
I know, you're the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me

Remember Brother Louie by the Stories from 1973? It was a #1 pop hit that lamented the parental racism of the white protagonist when he took his black girlfriend home to meet them. She was black as the night, Louie was whiter than white were pretty controversial lyrics at the time, but that song told it like it was and became a smash hit. Kenny Kercher and Richie Wise were the masterminds who helped to create the bluesy but seriously funky sound that perfectly couched the lead vocals of Ian Lloyd. The dynamic duo received a call from Neil Bogart, the then President of Buddah Records to come down and meet Gladys & The Pips to discuss recording a few songs with them. I've Got To Use My Imagination was agreed upon by the group and the producers laid down the rhythm track at Bell Sound studio in New York. The session players included Hugh McDonald on bass, Steve Burgh on guitar, Steve Mosley on drums, Jeff Gutcheon on piano and a string arrangement by Larry Wilcox. The intro to the song signals the gathering of a coming storm with the thunderous warpath beat of the tom tom's accentuated by the pulsing bassline building to a crescendo then releasing just as Gladys steps in with her Pips to tell the tale of a love gone cold. The song entered the pop charts on November 24, 1973 at #74 and ended peaking at #4 and spent one week at #1 on the R&B charts. It was the second single issued from their Imagination LP that also included the #1 hit Midnight Train To Georgia. The following year, Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me peaked at #3, but went to #1 R&B for two weeks. Then Curtis Mayfield worked with the band for their #5 single On And On, I Feel A Song peaked at #21 pop but spent two weeks at #1 R&B. 1975 brought them two pop hits, the live version of The Way We Were/Try To Remember (#11) and then Part Time Love (#22). At the end of the 70's, they had placed 24 songs spending a total of 205 weeks in the American Top 40. In 1977, the band was ready to leave Buddah, but Buddah was not ready to allow that. Since they held the band's contract, Gladys was not allowed to record any music with her Pips. In the interim, Gladys and The Pips recorded separately and each released two albums. When the contract dispute was resolved, the band signed with Columbia Records. By 1988 they were recording for MCA Records and had their final Top 20 hit, the #13 pop Love Overboard a seriously funky dance tune. They still sounded fresh and new a full 30 years from signing their first contract with Brunswick Records in 1957.
