J.S. Bach – Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903

    Watch the full concert:

Gerhard Oppitz (born 5 February 1953) is a German classical pianist. He studied with Paul Buck, Hugo Steurer and Wilhelm Kempff. In 1981 he was appointed professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München - the youngest in the history of the institute - where he still teaches. As a soloist he has appeared with many famous conductors and orchestras of the world. In the summer 1977, at the age of 24, Oppitz was the first German to win the Arthur Rubinstein piano competition in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Performance of cycles of complete piano works feature strongly in his concert repertoire, including Schubert's and Grieg's solo piano works and the sonatas by Beethoven and Mozart's sonatas, Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, and, especially, the complete works of Johannes Brahms. He has recorded the challenging Max Reger Piano Concerto Op. 114 with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and conductor Horst Stein. In 2009 he received the Brahmspreis from the Brahms Society of Schleswig-Holstein. Among his students is Valentina Babor.

  • SF Silent Film Festival The Four Musicians of Bremen - Evan Chow, pianist

    5:00

The Four Musicians of Bremen (1922) was one of Walt Disney's earliest works. This 7-minute silent cartoon was among a number of 'Laugh-O-Grams' created by Disney and other animators in his garage studio from 1921-1923. Thought lost for many years, these films were found in 2010 by film historian Cole Johnson in The Museum of Modern Art's holdings, but misclassified by alternate titles. The Laugh-O-Grams preceded Steamboat Willie, Disney's 1928 breakthrough opus.

On July 16, 2011 Four Musicians was screened by Donald Sosin as part of the 16th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival held at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco from July 14-17. In this excerpt, Evan Chow, age 17, performs the live piano accompaniment for the first half of the film.

The largest silent film festival in the country, the nonprofit San Francisco Silent Film Festival ( educates the public about the power and beauty of the silent film, as well as its value as a historical and cultural artifact both in the U.S. and abroad. Annual attendance has grown from an intial 1,800 fans to almost 11,000 enthusiasts today. Building on its success, the Festival has continued to expand this year, adding a fourth day of screenings and educational sessions.

Sunday afternoons will never be the same again.
In a brand new series devised by cellist/composer Philip Sheppard, on the first Sunday each month this autumn, top musicians will perform spontaneous soundtracks to the world's greatest silent films without watching the films or rehearsing in advance.

It will be utterly great when it all clicks, and unintentionally hilarious when it goes awry.

Bring the whole family. Suitable for everyone from 5 to 95.

There'll be as much slap-stick on stage as on screen; we get such a buzz from taking the risk with no safety net -- it's the adrenalin that makes it work, and when it's over you can't repeat it -- it's a one off! Come and see a group of musos having a busman's holiday. We may even get you up on stage to take part! Philip Sheppard

The films will include those of comic heroes Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Enjoy the relaxed, club-like atmosphere in Hall Two with plenty of room for some sophisticated mucking about.

American actor Raymond Hitchcock (1865-1929) / In the Days of Old (Robyn; Blossom) / from the 1904 Broadway musical comedy The Yankee Consul / Recorded: October 13, 1910 in New York --

Raymond Hitchcock (October 22, 1865 November 24, 1929) was a silent film actor, stage actor, and stage producer, who appeared in or produced 30 plays on Broadway from 1898 to 1928, and who became famous in silent films of the 1920s.

He appeared first as a star in the character of Abijah Booze in The Yankee Consul, and sang In the Days of Old. In his stage career, Hitchcock went back and forth between dramatic roles and ones in comic opera. Hitchcock also made several phonograph recordings of which many survive to lend an idea of what he sounded like.

In 1925, Hitchcock appeared in a test film made by Lee DeForest in DeForest's Phonofilm sound-on-film process, in which Hitchcock performed a sketch from his revue Hitchy-Koo, which was originally produced on Broadway in 1917, 1918, 1919, and 1920. Cole Porter wrote the music for the 1919 version.

Hitchcock was married to Freda Bowen from 1891 to 1903, and then was married to beautiful actress Flora Zabelle (1880-1968) from 1905 to his death in 1929. In one of her few movie roles, Zabelle appeared in the silent film The Red Widow (1916) opposite male lead John Barrymore. Barrymore's role had been played by Hitchcock in the 1911 Broadway production of The Red Widow. Hitchcock and Zabelle appear to have had no children. (wikipedia)
