  • Geordie - Can You Do It

    4:21

Geordie are a British rock band from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, most notably active in the 1970s.After AC/DC's lead singer Bon Scott died in February 1980, AC/DC chose Brian Johnson (whose vocal talent had previously been praised by Scott) to take over lead vocal duties.

Brian Johnson (born 5 October 1947) is an English singer and lyricist. Since 1980, he has been the lead singer of the rock band AC/DC.
Johnson was born in Dunston, Gateshead. He is of Italian descent and is the eldest of four siblings. His father, Alan, was a Sergeant Major of the British Army's Durham Light Infantry and a coal miner; he died during AC/DC's Ballbreaker tour. Johnson's mother, Esther (née De Luca), was an Italian from Frascati. When he was young, Johnson performed in various shows with the Scouts, and appeared in a play which aired on television, and joined a local church choir. Johnson's first band was the Gobi Desert Canoe Club. He was also in a band called Fresh. From 1970, Johnson played with cabaret/club band The Jasper Hart Band, performing songs from the musical Hair as well as soft-rock/pop songs of the time. He and other members of the band went on to form Geordie.

His first and only solo single, I Can't Forget You Now, he released also as a member of Geordie in January 1976 on the Red Bus label. In 1982, a compilation including only Geordie's 1973--1976 ten songs was issued as Brian Johnson's solo album Strange Man on the MCA label. The US 1989 CD Keep On Rocking, with re-recorded versions of the band's twelve known songs was released under the name of Brian Johnson and Geordie as well as the Australian 1991 compilation CD Rockin' With The Boys 1972--1976. Johnson married his first wife, Carol, in 1968. They divorced during the writing of The Razors Edge album. They have two daughters: Joanne (1968), and Kala (1973). He resides in Sarasota, Florida. He is also an avid supporter of Newcastle United, whom he once attempted to buy.

In September 2009, Johnson was diagnosed with Barrett syndrome. This caused AC/DC to cancel several shows on their 2009 tour in support of Black Ice. However, doctors were able to prevent the disease from developing into cancer. According to The Sunday Times Rich List of British millionaires from the world of music, Johnson was worth £50 million in 2011

The original (Feb 1972) line-up included: Vic Malcolm (lead guitar), Tom Hill (bass guitar), Brian Gibson (drums) and Brian Johnson (lead vocals). Their first single, Don't Do That broke into the UK Top 40 in December 1972. In March 1973, Geordie released their debut album, Hope You Like It on EMI . Competing with such British glam rock outfits as Slade and Sweet (Geordie supported the former on a UK tour, as well as the latter at a concert at the Rainbow Club, London in March 1973), they achieved U.K. Top 10 status with All Because Of You (April 1973) and had a U.K. Top 20 hit with Can You Do It (July 1973). They also had several appearances on BBC Television including 15 appearances on Top of the Pops, one of which was in November 1972.

Their second album, Don't Be Fooled By The Name (1974), including a cover of traditional House Of The Rising Sun, failed to yield a hit. Brian Johnson played House of the Rising Sun by Geordie on his debut BBC Radio 2 show on 31 Sept 2012. Amongst his other reminiscences during the debut show were his days in Geordie, appearing with them on TV in Belgium, and meeting Freddie Mercury of Queen.

After their 1976 album Save The World, front man Johnson left for a solo project. The band's final album, No Good Woman, in 1978 consisted of three unreleased tracks with Johnson and new material recorded by Malcolm with future Dire Straits keyboardist Alan Clark, vocalist Dave Ditchburn, bassist Frank Gibbon, and drummer George Defty. Johnson had meanwhile begun to perform as Geordie in a new line-up, sometimes also called Geordie II, in which he was the only original member. The band signed a recording contract in 1980, but finally folded that Spring when Johnson became a member of AC/DC to replace the late Bon Scott.

Geordie - All because of you 1973

I can remember the day when I had nothing to say
Just look at me now, I'm shouting (hey, hey, hey)
Ooh, I feel good, ooh, I feel good
But ain't no doubt about it

It's all because of you, baby
    All because of you, woman
    All because of you, baby
    All because of you, yeah

You don't know, you don't know
You don't know what it's like (hey, hey, hey)
To be happy again to have so many friends
Just when I thought it was the end

And it's all because of you, baby
    All because of you, woman
    All because of you, baby
    All because of you, yeah

    (Hey, hey, hey)
You got me, you got me, you got me, wooh

Geordie is Child ballad 209 (Roud 90), existing in many variants. Versions of the ballad have been sung by traditional folksingers in Scotland, England, Ireland, Canada and the United States, and performed and recorded by numerous artists and groups. This album of re-worked classics was released in 1989, under the title: Brian Johnson and Geordie: Keep On Rocking

(They included Brian's name in the title to further stress the point he was involved,in an attempt to ship more units by associating AC/DC with the release.Hints the AC/DC font used, and well...that picture of Brian is from the 1985,well into his tenure of AC/DC lead singer.)

This album features re-recordings of 12 of Geordie's previous songs. All the songs have re-worked instrumental parts, giving this album an 80's vibe.

I'm not positive, but in comparison to the original versions released on Geordie's other albums,Brian's vocals appear to be re-recorded as well.I assume he did them just before joining AC/DC, as he was putting together a new version of the group.

If he did record it while he was in AC/DC, nobody has wrote or talked about it.

Many people who've heard a song or two from this album find it horrible compared to the original 70's versions, but I think this album has been far overlooked. It's catchy, melodic, and the if you enjoy 80's rock, this is perfect for you.Brian sounds amazing, and it's amazing to hear how different he could have been in the 80's, just signifies how great of a singer he truly is.

I enjoy both the original and re-recorded songs, and this '89 release kicks some ass.

It's pretty cool really, when you consider, this is what an 80's Brian fronted Geordie would have been like, had he not joined AC/DC.

I just figured since I've not seen these version on the tube yet, that I'd post it.

  • Geordie: Can You Do It 89 HD

    4:29

    -Cheers
