From a NYT article about Ghena Dimitrova:

Dimitrova also performed at the famous Verona Arena, where, as she told Opera News, she had to adapt her technique to singing outdoors. In a theater, she sings legato, producing an unbroken line of melody. But: ''To be understood in the open air . . . the words have to be more clearly enunciated, so there is less true legato, but you compensate in the thrust of the voice.''

Ghena Dimitrova (Bulgarian: Гeна Димитpова) (6 May 1941--11 June 2005) was a Bulgarian operatic soprano. Her voice was known for its power and extension used in operatic roles such as Turandot in a career spanning four decades. She started singing in the school choir and her powerful voice led to her being offered a place at the Sofia Conservatory studying under Cristo Brambarov between 1959 and 1964. While she was initially classified as a mezzo-soprano, she was recognised as a soprano in her second year. She made her Italian debut as Turandot in Treviso in 1975, and essayed the same role for her 1983 La Scala debut opposite tenor Plácido Domingo in Franco Zeffirelli's lavish production. Her Turandot is also preserved in a video of the Arena di Verona production from 1983, with Nicola Martinucci and Cecilia Gasdia. In 1988, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York performing the same role. Dimitrova once said of the role: Turandot may not be my favorite part, but it shows off the voice to great advantage. The way the music is written, you need a voice like a trumpet to do it justice. Her debut in the United States was in 1981 performing the role of Elvira in Ernani. She sang at the Barbican Arts Centre in Ponchielli's La Gioconda in 1983 before making her Covent Garden debut in the same year...

    Lyrics & English Translation

The night was still and quiet
and beautiful in the terse sky
    the silvery moon
showed her glad and full face...
Suddenly the stillness of the night
    was broken by
    weal and sweet harmony -
the notes of a lute -
(and a troubador sang a melancholy song.)
Those verses were humble like the invocation
of a man praying to God.
(In that song a name was constantly repeated...mine!...)
So I rushed to the balcony...
It was him! It was him!...
I felt the joy that only angels
    are allowed to feel!...
To my heart, to my blissful glance,
    the earth seemed like Paradise.

Ghena Dimitrova Tatjanas letter Eugene Onegin

    10:50

    Tchaikovsky
    Eugene Onegin
    Tatjana's letter
    Ghena Dimitrova - 1987

    Tatjana
    Хоть каплю жалости храня,
    Вы не оставите меня.
    Сначала я молчать хотела;
    Поверьте, моего стыда
    Вы не узнали б никогда,
    Никогда!.. (Задумывается.)
    О да, клялась я сохранить в душе
    Не отдала бы сердца я!
    То в Вышнем суждено совете,
    То воля неба: я твоя!
    Вся жизнь моя была залогом
    Свиданья верного с тобой;

    Но мне порукой ваша честь.
    И смело ей себя вверяю!

    Lyrics & English Translation

    Peace, peace, my God!
    Cruel misfortune, alas, constrains me to languish;
Deep as on the first day, for so many years
    My suffering has endured.
    Peace, peace, my God!
I loved him, it's true! But God adorned him so much
    With beauty and courage,
That I still love him, nor will I be able to remove
    His image from my heart.
    Fate! Fate! Fate!
A crime has separated us in this world!
Alvaro, I love you, and it is written above in heaven:
I will never see you again!
    O God, God, make me die;
Since only death can give me calm.
In vain my soul hoped for peace here,
    While prey to such grief.
    Wretched bread . . . come prolong
My comfort-less life . . . But who is approaching?
Who dares to profane the sacred place?
    Let them be accursed!

    Content:
The story takes place somewhere between 1095 and 1097. Pagano, brother of Arvino, tried to kill him because of the bride Arvino Wiklinda on the eve of their wedding. The plan failed. He was captured, driven out and wandered for a long time.
Act 1. Many years later he returned to Milan (Lombardy), but not to ask for forgiveness, but to kill Arvino and kidnap Wiklind, whom he still loves, despite the fact that she already has an adult daughter Giselda . To do this, he orders Pirro to gather loyal people. Arvino feels something is amiss and collects loyal troops.
Night. In the house of Arvino, they pray to Wicklind and Giseld. Suddenly, a roar is heard, screams, Pagano bursts into the room, he killed Arvino and came for Viklinda. The next moment Arvino enters with the army. It was not Pagano who killed him, but their father. All curse Pagano, who goes to the Holy Land to atone for sins.

Act 2. A little while later. In the First Crusade ....
In Antioch, the Muslim tyrant Acciano, the main rival of the crusaders, rules. His son, Oronte, loves the Christian captive, Gizelda (and even, it seems, mutually) and is ready for her to change her faith, especially since his mother (Sofia) is also a Christian.
Pirro comes into the cave to a hermit known for his holiness. He does not recognize Pagano in him. The hermit promises to lead troops into the city and takes up the sword himself.
In the harem, Sofia tells Gizelda that the city was captured by the crusaders, Acceano and Oronte killed. Giselda, grief over Oronte, curses the crusaders, saying that they came to the Holy Sepulcher, but only for wealth.

Act 3. Oronte did not die. He made his way to the camp of Christians and became a crusader. Mortally wounded, he sees Gizelda off the coast of Jordan. They swear eternal love. Pagano crowns them and baptizes Oronte. Saracen dies a Christian.

Act 4. Before the battle for Jerusalem, the crusaders stop at the Shiloam font, which Oronte indicated to them, appearing in a dream Gizelda among the angels.
During the battle, a hermit is mortally wounded. He reveals his name to Arvino and Giselde and asks not to curse him. He dies, forgiven, upon seeing the liberation of Jerusalem.

  • Puccini TURANDOT Dimitrova,Domingo,Ricciarelli Maazel 1983 Scala sub español

    2:13:59
