From a NYT article about Ghena Dimitrova:

Dimitrova also performed at the famous Verona Arena, where, as she told Opera News, she had to adapt her technique to singing outdoors. In a theater, she sings legato, producing an unbroken line of melody. But: ''To be understood in the open air . . . the words have to be more clearly enunciated, so there is less true legato, but you compensate in the thrust of the voice.''

  • NABUCCO - Bruson, Dimitrova, Baglioni, Garaventa - Arena di Verona, 1981 - English Subtitles

    2:10:27

Nabucco-monumental. Costumes are from designer's nightmare, staging a tad dusty, but this is swept away by the Arena and the singing. Dimitrova - Bruson as Abigaille and Nabucco are classics, to this add up great ensembles and the ocean-like chorus. Details below.

    Music: Giuseppe Verdi

    Nabucco - RENATO BRUSON
    Abigaille - GHENA DIMITROVA
    Zaccaria - DIMITER PETKOV
    Fenena - BRUNA BAGLIONI
    Ismaele - OTTAVIO GARAVENTA

    Conductor - MAURIZIO ARENA
    Director - RENZO GIACCHIERI

17:21 - Prode guerrier... Lo t'amava! (Abigaille, Fenena, Ismaele - Proud warrior... I loved you!)
28:30 - Tremin gl'insani del mio furore! (Sextet - Let the madmen tremble at my anger!)
32:56 - Mio furor, non più costretto (Sextet - My anger, no longer restrained)
40:01 - Ben io t'invenni... Anch'io dischiuso un giorno (Abigaille - Good that I found... I too once had opened...)
48:27 - Salgo già del trono aurato (Abigaille - Ascend to the gilded throne's blooded seat)
56:33 - Che si vuol? (Ismaele, chorus - What can be wanted?)
    1:00:54 - S'appressan gl'istanti (Quartet - The moment of a deadly anger )
1:07:02 - Chi mi toglie il regio scettro?.. (Nabucco - Who is taking the sceptre ?)
1:23:45 - Oh di qual onta... Deh perdona (Nabucco, Abigaille - Oh what shame... Alas, pardon)
1:32:05 - Va', pensiero (Chorus - Go, thoughts)
1:36:51 - Oh chi piange? (Zaccaria, chorus - Oh who weeps?)
1:46:40 - Dio di Giuda!... (Nabucco - God of the Jews!)
1:52:52 - Cadran, cadranno i perfidi... (Nabucco, chorus - The traitors shall fall)
    2:01:25 - Su me... morente... (Abigaille - On me..dying..)

  • Ritorna Vincitor Ghena Dimitrova Verdi Aida

    6:44

    Ritorna vincitor! Return, victor!
E dal mio labbro uscì l'empia parola! And from my lips escapes the impious word!
Vincitor del padre mio di lui Victor over my father -
Che impugna l'armi per me over the armies
Per ridonarmi una patria, defending my country,
Una reggia e il nome illustre my palace, and the illustrious name
Che qui celar m'è forza! that is my sky, my strength!
Vincitor de'miei fratelli ond'io lo vegga, Victor over my brothers, I will see
Tinto del sangue amato, with whose loved blood is stained -
Trionfar nel plauso dell'Egizie coorti! Triumphant in the applause of Egyptian troops.
E dietro il carro, And behind his chariot,
Un Re, mio padre di catene avvinto! a king, my father, the captive of this victor!

L'insana parola o Numi sperdete! The insane word, o gods, forget!
Al seno d'un padre la figlia rendete, To the bosom of his father return his daughterk
Struggete le squadre dei nostri oppressor! struggling against the squadrons of our
    oppressor!
Ah! sventurata! Che dissi? Ah! unhappy one! What did I say?
E l'amor mio? And my love?
Dunque scordar poss'io questo fervido amore Can I ever forget the fervent love
Che, oppressa e schiava, that oppresses and enslaves!
Come raggio di sol qui mi beava? Like rays of the sun which blesses me?
Imprecherò la morte a Radamès I will call for death to Radames,
a lui ch'amo pur tanto! To him that I love forever!
Ah! non fu interra mai da più crudeli never on earth, by more cruelty
Angoscie un core affranto! was a heart torn!

I sacri nomi di padre d'amante, In the sacred name of my father, who I love,
Nè profferir poss'io nè ricordar I cannot offer or recall
Per l'un per l'altro confusa tremante For one or the other confused, trembling,
Io piangere vorrei pregar. I weep and want to pray.
Ma la mia prece in bestemmia si muta But my prayer becomes blasphemy
Delitto è il pianto a me colpa il sospir A crime are my tears, my sighs are my sin.
In notte cupa la mente è perduta In night-darkness the mind is lost.
E nell'ansia crudel vorrei morir. And in cruel anguish, I want to die.

Numi, pietà del mio soffrir! Gods, have pity on my suffering!
Speme non v'ha pel mio dolor There is no hope in my woe
Amor fatal tremendo amore Fatal love, tremendous love,
Spezzami il cor, fammi morir! Break my heart or let me die!

Ghena Dimitrova (Bulgarian: Гeна Димитpова) (6 May 1941--11 June 2005) was a Bulgarian operatic soprano. Her voice was known for its power and extension used in operatic roles such as Turandot in a career spanning four decades. She started singing in the school choir and her powerful voice led to her being offered a place at the Sofia Conservatory studying under Cristo Brambarov between 1959 and 1964. While she was initially classified as a mezzo-soprano, she was recognised as a soprano in her second year. She made her Italian debut as Turandot in Treviso in 1975, and essayed the same role for her 1983 La Scala debut opposite tenor Plácido Domingo in Franco Zeffirelli's lavish production. Her Turandot is also preserved in a video of the Arena di Verona production from 1983, with Nicola Martinucci and Cecilia Gasdia. In 1988, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York performing the same role. Dimitrova once said of the role: Turandot may not be my favorite part, but it shows off the voice to great advantage. The way the music is written, you need a voice like a trumpet to do it justice. Her debut in the United States was in 1981 performing the role of Elvira in Ernani. She sang at the Barbican Arts Centre in Ponchielli's La Gioconda in 1983 before making her Covent Garden debut in the same year...

    Lyrics & English Translation

The night was still and quiet
and beautiful in the terse sky
    the silvery moon
showed her glad and full face...
Suddenly the stillness of the night
    was broken by
    weal and sweet harmony -
the notes of a lute -
(and a troubador sang a melancholy song.)
Those verses were humble like the invocation
of a man praying to God.
(In that song a name was constantly repeated...mine!...)
So I rushed to the balcony...
It was him! It was him!...
I felt the joy that only angels
    are allowed to feel!...
To my heart, to my blissful glance,
    the earth seemed like Paradise.

Have mercy on a soul about to set out
    Upon hat journey from
    Which there is no returning!
Have mercy on it, divine bounty,
May it not fall prey to death!
    That sound, those sad and
    Solemn prayers fill the air
    With sombre terror!
The anguish with which I am filled
Checks the breath on my lips and stops
    My very heartbeat!
    [Oh! Death is ever
    Slow in coming

    Farewell.]

    Will open for him

    Lyrics & English Translation

    Peace, peace, my God!
    Cruel misfortune, alas, constrains me to languish;
Deep as on the first day, for so many years
    My suffering has endured.
    Peace, peace, my God!
I loved him, it's true! But God adorned him so much
    With beauty and courage,
That I still love him, nor will I be able to remove
    His image from my heart.
    Fate! Fate! Fate!
A crime has separated us in this world!
Alvaro, I love you, and it is written above in heaven:
I will never see you again!
    O God, God, make me die;
Since only death can give me calm.
In vain my soul hoped for peace here,
    While prey to such grief.
    Wretched bread . . . come prolong
My comfort-less life . . . But who is approaching?
Who dares to profane the sacred place?
    Let them be accursed!

    Lyrics & English Translation

In this palace, thousands of years ago,
    a desperate cry rang out.
And that cry, passing down the generations
found refuge here in my soul!
    Princess Lo-u-Ling,
sweet and serene ancestress, you who reigned
in your deep silence in pure joy
    and defied, unyielding and confident,
    the harsh domination (of men),
today you live again in me!

(It was when the King of the Tartars unfurled his seven banners.)

And yet in the time that everyone remembers,
there was dismay and terror and the roar of arms.
    The kingdom was conquered!
And Lo-u-Ling, my ancestress, dragged away
by a man like you, like you,
stranger, there in the terrible night
where her young voice was stifled!

(For ages she has slept in her vast tomb.)

O Princes, who in long caravans
from every part of the world
come here to try your fortune,
I avenge upon you, upon you
that purity, that cry and that death!
No man will ever possess me!
Horror of the man who killed her
    remains alive in my heart.
No, no! No man will ever possess me!
Ah, in me is reborn the pride
    of such great chastity!
    Stranger! Do not tempt fortune!
The riddles are three, death is one!

With Nicola Martinucci at the top of his game - his first Calaf on record. Also, this is probably the best recording of Dimitrova's Turandot from the 1970s. Unfortunately, my CD was damaged, the first bars of the aria are missing. The picture is from the actual performance that you are listening to.

It is the cabaletta and cantabile.

Yes, it is maybe, less beautiful than, for example, her Abigaille in Milan in 1986, her high notes acids and a bit low, but it is an impressive interpretation.
