Bob and Marcia were a Jamaican vocal duo that consisted of Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths. They had a #5 UK hit single in 1970 with 'Young, Gifted and Black'. • The Griffiths-Holy Smoke, Studio Recording

    3:27

This song is taken from Isaiah Chapter 6. Robert quotes a few of those verses during the introduction portion of this song. Even though this is a studio recording, I've edited in his introduction from a live concert they did at Sanford, North Carolina in the early 2000's. This song was written by Robert, his son, Matthew and long time co-writing partner, the late Shannon Childress.

  • The Griffiths-Glory To Glory, Studio Recording

    4:33

There is no information available on the inspiration that led to the writing of this song. All we know is what we've heard Robert say when introducing it.

We were fashioned in “glory, a glorious creation. Then we, mankind, fell from that glory through disobedience. After which, our Elder Brother, the Messiah came from glory to redeem us back to that glorious state and, one day, we'll be taken to glory.

This is a thought provoking truth. Simply deep in meaning and a notion to ponder. From Glory to Glory.

  • The Griffiths-Weve Just Stepped Behind The Veil, Studio Recording

    5:35

The late George Lewis, writer of the songs made popular by The Hoppers, “Citizen Of Two Worlds” and “I Didn't See Him Go Up But I'll See Him When He Comes Down”, was hosting The Griffiths at the church where he was pastor at Thomaston, Georgia. It was a New Years Eve meeting and when it was over, it is reported that George said to Robert, “I have a new song I'd love to share with you before you leave”... so, George went to the piano and sang this song for the group. Immediately when George finished, Robert said, “George, we will record that song”.

When the group got on the bus to leave, the story was related that Chris said, “you know Rob, I liked the song but I'm not sure what you're so thrilled about.” Robert said, “Chris, we'll record that and one of these days, we'll be sharing it with a congregation and The Spirit will show us just what is so great about that song”.

Sure enough, the group had just returned from a west coast trip and set up at Gateway Baptist Church in Bristol, Tennessee. They sang this song as their last song after which a preacher was scheduled to speak but, no one could move. The pastor of the church was slumped down in his chair and attempted several times to get up but couldn't. The entire congregation was weeping silently. It was an unforgettable evening during which several spiritual and physical healings took place. No one who was there has ever forgotten the visit of The Most High that night.

Prayerfully, as you consider the message, you will be so moved. Hallelujah!

  • The Griffiths-Im Looking Above, Studio

    3:02

Gary Trout was pastor of Lower Falls Baptist Church at Saint Albans, West Virginia in the mid 80's. He had a revival meeting and invited The Gethsemane Quartet (the group Robert, Patti, Matthew and Audra was with in those days) to provide the music while evangelist Danny Prior of Villa Rica, Georgia preached.

One night, the title of Danny's message was, “I'm Looking Above, While Living Below.” Of course, Robert thought that idea would sing and... it did! This song came from that message and was first recorded by The Gethsemane and later on this rendition by The Griffiths. It was also recorded by The Kingsmen Quartet of Asheville, North Carolina. Enjoy.

Ray Vaughn of Thomasville, North Carolina and Robert were introduced to one another in the mid '80's. They are still best friends at the time of this writing.

Ray is a song writer and has had may groups to record his songs. Among them, The Inspirations, The McKamey's, The Griffiths and many others. Ray and Robert formed Vaughn Griffith Music Publishing together to keep royalties “in house” as much as possible. Here is one of Ray's songs that features Audra and has a message that is timeless and beautiful. Enjoy!

This song was written by two great friends of The Griffiths.

The first is the late George Lewis who wrote many songs over the years most gospel music lovers would know that were recorded by The Hoppers. Among them, “I Didn't See Him Go Up But I'll See Him When He Comes Down” and “Citizen Of Two Worlds” are two favorites.

The second writer of this tune is the late Shannon Childress who was the pianist, bass singer and vocal arranger for The Hoppers for 12 years. Shannon also wrote many songs with Robert of The Griffiths and they co-produced this album.

  • Diarmaid Ferriter on Arthur Griffith = Newstalk 106-108 FM Part 1

    10:16

Arthur Griffith Art Ó Gríobhtha (1871-1922)

Born at 61 Upper Dominick Street on 31 March 1871 into a family of Welsh descent, Arthur Griffith was educated by the Christian Brothers before working as a printer like his father who worked for The Nation newspaper. As a young man he joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Gaelic League. After the split in the Irish Parliamentary Party, the failure of the Home Rule campaign and the death of Charles Stuart Parnell, a hero for the young Griffith, he went to live in South Africa for a time while recovering from TB where he sympathetized and identified with the Boer cause and supported Paul Kruger.

Griffith returned to Ireland in 1899 and together with William Rooney (d. 1901) formed the United Irishman newspaper. Inspired by the rhetoric of 19th century Irish nationalist John Mitchel, Griffith was a fierce opponent of the IPP alliance with the Liberal Party. He also supported independence movements in Egypt and India and was an outspoken opponent of British imperialism as well as socialism (his attitudes did not stop him co-operating with James Connolly). In 1900 he and Maud Gonne, the muse of poet W.B. Yeats and wife of John McBride, organised opposition to the visit of Queen Victoria to Ireland and in 1903 opposed the visit of King Edward VII. In 1900 he also formed the Cumann na nGaedheal (Society of Gaels) which aimed to unite the various Irish nationalist separatist movements. During the Boer War, Griffith supported the Boers and opposed British Army recruitment while John McBride and others formed an Irish Brigade to fight against the British.

Later Griffith like many others in Irish society in 1904 defended an ugly anti-Jewish pogram in Limerick however years later his anti-semitic opinions changed and he became a close friend of many prominent Irish Jews. Griffith also shared the period's social conservativism and tight laced sexual morality. In 1907 he denounced the John Milington Synge's The Playboy Of The Western World as a vile and inhuman story told in the foulest language we have ever listened to from a public platform and for its protrayl of Irish women as a drift of females standing in their shifts.

The tenets of the Sinn Féin policy were outlined in Griffith's highly influential work The Resurrection of Hungary which proposed a dual monarchy for Britain and Ireland with separate governments for both kingdoms in the style of Hungary which had secured a similar autonomy within the Austran Empire. Griffith claimed the Act of Union of 1800 which created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was illegal and that the Irish Parliament founded by Henry Grattan in 1782 should be restored and that Irish parliamentarians should abstain from Westminister. When the Sinn Féin Party was formed in 1905 its first leader was Edward Martyn, a wealthy cultural activist and playwright who was descended from Jacobite Irish Catholic gentry. The party merged with other nationalist organisations and quickly became infiltrated by hardline IRB members who sought to turn it into an openly republican party. It struggled to gain support in competition with the broader IPP but succeeded in electing a number of councillors including W. T. Cosgrave in Dublin. Matters were not helped by Griffith's opposition to strikers led by Jim Larkin and support for the employers during the 1913 Dublin Lockout.

Griffith and most other Irish nationalists passionately supported the drive for Home Rule in the 1910s that led to the passage of the Home Rule in 1914 which was nonetheless suspended by the British government after the commencement of World War I 1914-1918. The Irish Volunteers enjoyed the support of the broad Irish nationalist spectrum who had been gearing up to what looked like an inevitable confrontation with the Ulster Volunteer Force, the British military and British Conservatives who sought to usurp the democratic will of the majority of the Irish people which was behind Home Rule. When John Redmond and his IPP and the majority of the membership endorsed Irish participation in the war, the movement split and a hardline republican clique around Thomas Clarke, Thomas McDonagh and Patrick Pearse planned what became the Easter Rising in 1916.

Griffith and Sinn Féin had little or nothing to with the rebellion except that some members had participated such as W. T. Cosgrave and the rising became erronously known as the Sinn Féin rebellion. After the release of rebel prisoners by late 1916 and eqarly 1917, the membership of the party exploded and the IRB took over control of organisation sidelining the dual monarchists and transforming it into an openly republican party under the new leadership of Eamon De Valera. Griffith who had resigned the leadership and his supporters sidelined by the republican newcomers had threatened to split the party in 1917. Nonetheless the popularity of Sinn F

The master had performed may miracles in the sight of the disciples and it was time for a boat ride. In Mark 4:35, Messiah said, … “Let us pass over unto the other side.” He didn't say, let's get in the boat and get shipwrecked, He said, “let us pass over...” Apparently, the boys forgot that He said they were going to pass over and, when the wind became boisterous, in Mark 4:38 they said, “...Master, carest thou not that we perish?”

  • The Griffiths-Greater Is He, Studio Recording

    3:49

Here's a classic Lanny Wolfe tune first made popular by The Downings in 1973. The story we heard is, the group didn't want to record the song because they said, “it sounds like it was written in the '70's” and, well it was. So, Robert surprised them with it in the studio.

On the way to Candock Recording Studio at Surfside Beach, SC to record tracks, Robert and his co-producer, Shannon Childress were following the bus, discussing the project. Robert said, “I want us to cover this classic tune and do this arrangement” as he put a tape of The Downings recording of Greater Is He in the player. He asked Shannon to write a chart for it. He did so.

After they got to the studio and the band recorded a few other tracks, Robert said, “ok gentlemen, here's the next song”... the group went nuts when they realized that Robert had slipped this song in on them. But, it ended up being one of the highlights of their concerts during the years they were promoting this album.

Hallelujah, 1John 4:4 is true! “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” Enjoy!

Robert grew up at Saint Albans, West Virginia and, from birth, was a member of the Grace Baptist Temple where Dr. O.E. Caldwell was pastor. Pastor Caldwell had 3 sons and a daughter, John, Paul, James Harold and Lois Gail. John was an evangelist, Paul was the music director at the church, James Harold was in the choir along with younger sister, Lois Gail who was just a bit older than Robert and also a musician.

Lois Gail has written many popular gospel songs. They include one popularized by The Kingsmen Quartet called, “The Judgment” and a favorite by The Hayes Family called, “The Last Blood”.

This song, featuring 13 year old, Audra, was written by Lois Gail as well and, as far as is known, The Griffiths were the first gospel music group to record it. It was one of their most requested songs for many years. Enjoy!

  • The Griffiths-The Joy That Jesus Gives, Studio

    2:43

Back in the '60's and '70's, generally when Lanny Wolfe would write a new song, his group, The Lanny Wolfe Trio would introduce it on a recording. Then, The Downings would put it on one of their albums and it would become a radio hit. Likewise, when Bill and Gloria Gaither would write, their group, The Bill Gaither Trio would record it but The Speer Family would make it popular.

In this case, just the opposite occurred. This song, written by Lanny Wolfe, was recorded by The Speer Family on a live, two album set it 1972 and featured the voice of Sue Chenault Dodge. You'll see Sue and The Griffiths on this channel singing a song together that was actually written by Bill Gaither, “Old Fashioned Meeting” which is another song that featured Sue on that 1972 Speer Family album.

Here, the family backs 13 year old, Audra up on this classic cover tune written by Lanny Wolfe and first recorded by The Speer Family entitled, The Joy That Jesus Gives.

John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

    Hebrews 10:10-12; By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

  • The Griffiths-What Have We Got To Lose, Studio Recording

    3:40

    It is so interesting to learn what the inspiration was that led to the writing of different songs. This one was related to us here at thegriffithsfanclub as follows;

Robert was on the phone with a fellow gospel musician who said, “Robert, pray for me, I'm about to lose my house”. Robert began right away praying aloud and said,

“Father, we know we're not to think about what we are going to eat, or drink or what we are going to wear because you tell us in the book of Matthew that you clothe the lilies of the field without their assistance. We are to seek Your Kingdom and Your Righteousness and You will add all of these things to us... but, Father, if you see fit to take our house, why then, we'll just praise you on the street... if you move us to a shelter, we'll praise You there because You tell us in all things we are to give thanks for this is Your will for us in Christ... if these circumstances end up taking that which is most precious to us, our very own lives, all we'll do is move from here to there and we'll keep on praising You because, what have we got to lose!”

Robert said, when he got off the phone and thought about that prayer he said, “Hallelujah Father, that prayer was wonderful! If you give me a tune for that, I believe it'll sing!”

He told his friend, Ricky Atkinson who is a great song writer and has a group called, “Compassion” about that prayer, sent him the lyrics he had written based on that prayer and this song was born out of that.

Remember, there is no prayer that is not breathed of the Holy Spirit. Anything else is just babbling. Enjoy my child of The Most High and praise Him cause, “What Have We Got To Lose?”

  • The Griffiths-The King Is Still Coming, Studio

    4:22

Although Robert had many songs prior to this that were recorded by other gospel music groups, this is the first song he wrote that was recorded by The Hoppers. They went on to record many more over the years that followed along with those co-written by he and their pianist/bass/vocal arranger, the late, Shannon Childress.

Robert said, “I remember the first time I ever heard the song, The King Is Coming, written by Bill and Gloria Gaither. I was 14 years old, listening to Christian radio at Charleston, West Virginia and that song came on and, I thought”, he said, “the King was gonna come before the song ended because it was so exciting and well presented by The Speer Family”.

Later, he was about 35 years old, had two children and was shocked that the King hadn't come. So, he decided to address everything that Gaither did in his song and update it to give that same hope to the generation represented by his own children. Enjoy!
