Thought I was done with Gabor huh?

This is one of his most haunting and beautiful albums, sometimes even leaning into classical but always soaring through with his mystical phrases and rhythms. A must listen from start to finish!

    Album: Spellbinder (1966)

From his 1961 debut with Chico Hamilton, Hungarian émigré Gabor Szabo was an iconoclast. At a time when most jazz guitarists used hollow-body electrics with conventional tuning, Szabo played an acoustic instrument. This enabled his distinctive style built around drones or pedal points—a single tone (usually the tonic or dominant) sustained or repeated in the bass— above which he layered solos of exotic, raga-like entrancement. Backed by Latin percussionists, Szabo's Hungaro-Cuban Spellbinder suggests Columbus may have found a short route to India after all. This benevolent spell fades away much too soon, but is binding to this day.

Gabor Szabo - The Last Song - Hotel Hilton, Budapest - 1978

In 1961, Szabó became member of a quintet that was led by #ChicoHamilton and included #CharlesLloyd, playing what has been described as #chamberjazz, with a moderate avant-gardism. Szabó was influenced by the rock music of the 1960s, particularly the use of #feedback. In 1965 he was in a jazz pop group led by #GaryMcFarland, then worked again with Lloyd in an energetic quartet with #RonCarter and #TonyWilliams. The song Gypsy Queen from Szabó's debut solo album Spellbinder became a hit for rock guitarist #CarlosSantana. During the late 1960s, Szabó worked in a group with guitarist #JimmyStewart. He started the label #SkyeRecords with McFarland and #CalTjader. Szabó continued to be drawn to more popular, commercial music in the 1970s. He performed often in #California, combining elements of #Gypsy and Indian music with jazz. He returned often to his home country of Hungary to perform, and it was there that he died just short of his 46th birthday.

    album : JAZZ RAGA

Jazz Raga, recorded in August of 1966, and released in early 1967, is Hungarian jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo's third album for Impulse!, and his most exotic and mysterious. Szabo not only played guitar on the live-to-two-track sessions, he also overdubbed sitar on nine of the album's eleven cuts. Produced by Bob Thiele and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, it combines Szabo's singular guitar sound (equally influenced by West Coast jazz, Hungarian gypsy folk songs, and Indian music -- which he began studying as early as 1961), as he fronts a rhythm section of drummer Bernard Purdie and upright bassist Jack Gregg on nearly half of the album with an expanded lineup that also included electric bassist Bob Bushnell on the rest.

well what can i say? my all time favourite guitarist who sadly passed away in a car accident in 1982...no big write up here because i'll get carried away but after leaving his native hungary in the late '50s and enrolling at the berklee school of music he quickly made a name for himself with an original style of playing with the chico hamilton quintet and charles lloyd sextet...'66 saw him breaking away from playing for others and forming his own outfit...he went on to release countless albums and playing countless sessions....'68 he along with his great friend gary mcfarland/norman schwartz & cal tjader formed 'skye records' releasing a wide variety of jazz based albums and pop....here as much as yesterdays upload of tom scott he had to pay the rent so he recorded in los angeles a 'hip' album of pop-psych covers...session players were jim gordon/carol kaye/herb ellis/victor feldman/the bahler bros on vocals and the wonderful bill plummer on sitar...check out plummers amazing psychedelic-jazz album with his band the cosmic brotherhood with this track 'a journey to the east'...

    THE SORCERER
    Gabor Szabo
Jazz Workshop, Boston: April 14-15, 1967

Gabor Szabo's 1967-68 quintet, featuring classically-trained guitarist Jimmy Stewart, was one of the iconoclastic guitarist's very best units. Live performances like this, recorded April 14 and 15, 1967, at Boston's Jazz Workshop, document some of the exciting interplay the group stirred during its brief existence. The quintet's constants were the two guitarists with Szabo's childhood friend from Hungary, bassist Louis Kabok, and percussionist Hal Gordon. The drummer's chair, here filled by Marty Morell, was bound to be different every night; filled at various times by West Coasters Jim Keltner, Bill Goodwin, Dick Berk and others. THE SORCERER reveals how successfully the group was combining jazz with rock (the utterly lightweight The Beat Goes On and the Hendrix-like Space, sampled by Madonna for Mer Girl from 1998's RAY OF LIGHT), bossa nova (Little Boat and Corcovado) and exotica (Mizrab). The two guitarists are creatively envelope listeners in just about any mood they explore. It is most apparent in the way they ignite the standards, People and What Is This Thing Called Love. The latest CD reissue of this set is fleshed out with three excellent tracks from the same concert that were originally included on the LP MORE SORCERY - the hypnotic Los Matadoros, the potent People and the effervescent Corcovado. Until Impulse! gets around to releasing the guitarist's superior SPELLBINDER on CD, THE SORCERER is one of the best introductions to one of the most outstanding and unique guitarists to have emerged during the 1960s.

  • Gabor Szabo Live With Charles Lloyd Full Album

    36:12

This is one of Gabor's finest live recordings, a true jazz funk workout with an ensemble of veteran jazz players. Charles Lloyd was a longtime collaborator of his and you can tell the band reaches telepathic levels of musical connection at some points.

    Highlight: Stormy.
    Enjoy.
