Instructor Jimmy Brown thoroughly discusses a broad range of harmony-related topics for intermediate to advanced players. He reveals the inner workings of the symmetrical diminished and augmented scales, explores hexatonic scale harmony, explains the chord-scale relationships that exist within the harmonic and melodic minor scales, and demonstrates their most interesting applications, particularly for soloing over exotic chords. As a bonus, Mastering Fretboard Harmony Part 2 comes with a 54-page digital TAB booklet that features 294 examples.

  • Transcription: Two Part Invention no. 13, J.S. Bach

    1:19

Invention no. 13 for piano, played on guitar by Miles Okazaki. Both hands of the piano part are played here with one hand, with some octave shifts to accommodate the range of the guitar. Played on a full size 1963 Gibson C-0 Classical guitar.

J.S. Bach on the Inventions and Sinfonias:
Honest method, by which the amateurs of the keyboard -- especially, however, those desirous of learning -- are shown a clear way not only (1) to learn to play cleanly in two parts, but also, after further progress, (2) to handle three obligate parts correctly and well; and along with this not only to obtain good inventions (ideas) but to develop the same well; above all, however, to achieve a cantabile style in playing and at the same time acquire a strong foretaste of composition.

  • Building 12 Tones

    4:04

Visualization of the construction of a lattice of 12 chromatic tones in a 5 limit Just Intonation harmonic system. There are many ways to build a 12-tone system - this one is fairly simple and elegant. Pictured above the lattice is a monochord, which visualizes a string divided into two parts. The two sections of the string will have a frequency relationship described by the ratio on the lattice. A similar lattice structure can be found in Helmholtz' On the Sensations of Tone, and W.A. Mathieu's The Harmonic Experience.
For those who object to negative partials and the idea of a subharmonic series, just think of it backwards. (i.e. instead of saying Ab is the negative 5th partial of C, just say C is the 5th partial of Ab). C pedal is played throughout, to hear the beats between the two pitches.
