In recent years, I have created a number of works in which certain structural constellations are emphasized in particular, whereas others are missing completely. In a sense these pieces are like studies; however they are no compositional finger exercises. Owing to the formal architecture and the narrative mode of what occurs, the work character remains immanent. Kurzzeit, a piece for ensemble, is one of them.

This work is without melodics or themes. As if out of nowhere, a multi-coloured, polyrhythmic web is created by the superposition of rapid sound-repetitions in the individual parts. Occasionally, in the first and third part of the piece, where this web is less densely woven, it becomes recognisable as such; in places of greater density, this results in some rather summary impressions – for instance in the second part, which starts with a marked pulsation in ff, and where, from a polymetric concentration, again a pulsation gradually emerges. Elements from the first part are outlined in the last in retrograde.

The fundamental sound of Friedrich Cerha’s music is unique. Viennese, his sources definitely come from the lineage of Bruckner, Mahler, Berg and Webern, but, first and foremost, he has escaped categorization. His life, turned upside down by the war, will lead him to acquire the new languages of the 20th century, without ever allowing himself to be enclosed in any kind of system.

His music reveals a hidden interior world rooted in rare sincerity, a type of bareness that touches us to the extreme. With generosity mixed with resistance, he drives us, unbeknown to us, to explore depths that sometimes fringe on the abyssal. This path is filled with surprising events, exceptionally concise, clear and bewitching. It is amazing how this brilliant artisan and discreet magician overwhelms us with incredible harmonic finds.

How he can suddenly produce out of nowhere a wild dance, or a bird, or even this strange croaking sound? Beyond form and style, nature and life light up Friedrich Cerha’s music with their surprising presence.

Whether it expresses hope or despair, violence or gentleness, its essence always proceeds from a calmness that links us to a kind of magnetic and mysterious spirituality.

The Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® is an internationally appreciated ensemble founded in Vienna by flutist Silvia Gelos and pianist Gustavo Balanesco in order to counteract the discrepancy between the reality of the musical life on one side and the dreams of the musicians on the other. The main aim of the ensemble is to offer distinctly different concert programs to audiences and at the same time widen its view and understanding of concerts.

    The discovery of new repertory
Typically for this internationally castled soloist ensemble is its innovative programmatic work and its self-accountable organizational structure. When Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® produces international concerts, it reserves considerable space for the classic works of the twentieth century in order to develop these exchanges and progress beyond the stage of mere discovery, and with also the purpose of developing cultural relations. Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® regularly collaborates with Austrian and foreign institutions.

    Pedagogical approach
As part of the pedagogical approach, the musicians of the Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® give workshops in contemporary music for children's and the ongoing project: Presentation of Schönbergs Pierrot Lunaire op.21 for upper-school pupils in cooperation with international institutions. They also give instrumental master-classes. This teaching is aimed primarily at young students in various disciplines (instrumental classes, contemporary techniques, notation, contemporary chamber music, etc) with their extensive knowledge of modern and contemporary music, and their experience with young musicians, Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien´s performers are an excellent coaching resource for students working on repertoire from the 20th and 21st Centuries.

    International action
Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® contributes to the discovery of the works and the musical ideals of young Austrian and foreign composers by including a pedagogical approach to their works which brings together the musicians, the composers and young students from other countries. Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® invites young foreign composers to participate in its international musical season. The Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien ® presents worldwide between 50 - 60 performances a year of contemporary music in all aspects at the highest artistic level in addition to confirmed styles at international festivals, important concert events, in notable concert venues and its own concert cycles.
